I thought this was the case, and this chart shows it is true......head to head result is not even considered in the tie breakers.Christo said:

Head to head is the third tiebreaker, after goals differential and goals scored. All those random blue spots in the top half show the US winning on the H2H tiebreaker over Ghana.

The SBJ guy was on satellite a minute ago.
He says that MLS only got a 2% bump in viewers after the '10 Cup.
Based on that, doesn't think MLS gets much from this one either....despite the huge numbers.
Says it's clear become a big EVENT, but it's not a reflection of the sport in this country.
Thoughts?

There's a diversity of opinion over whether growing the sport need be synonous with growing MLS.
With that said MLS is as healthy now as it has ever been.

USA wins or USA draws = 37% chance
USA loses and Portugal/Ghana draw = 18%
USA loses and Portugal or Ghana win, but US still advances = 21%
USA loses and Portugal or Ghana win and US fails to advance = 24%
So we're still better than 50/50 (39/63) with a loss, and even a US loss and winner in the other game leaves it close to 50/50 (21/45).

MLS teams circa 2010 had far fewer World Cup players on them.
MLS might not get a huge pop but the league's interest was growing at a huge rate anyway.

Was thinking that...but what are the other gauges of growth?
Obviously deals like the ESPN-EPL...but what else is out there?

Yeah... MLS is doing *ok*. And I don't really see people jumping into MLS with both feet because of the WC.
But... I do see people similar to the ones in this thread, looking for other Cups to follow (Euro, Copa America) and checking out an EPL/La Liga or Champions League game or three. And then maybe poking around MLS once they've figured out whether they're more interested or not.

Group C: Greece's ugliness might be rewarded yet - that 0-0 result wasn't the worst thing for them. Though it naturally was better for Colombia and Cote D'Ivoire. Japan's inability to capitalize on the man-advantage has them just about cooked. Anyway.
Colombia: Has clinched a spot in the knock out round.
Will finish first with:
1) a win or tie vs Japan
or 2) a loss and a loss or tie by Cote D'Ivoire
or 3) a loss and a win by Cote D'Ivoire where the combined margin of the games is 3 or less.
or 4) a loss and a win by Cote D'Ivoire where the combined margin of games is exactly 4 and Cote D'Ivoire fails to outscore Colombia by 3 or more.
Cote D'Ivoire:
Will finish first with:
1) a win and a loss by Colombia where the combined marging of the games is 5 or more.
or 2) a win and a loss by Colombia where the combined margin of the games is exactly 4 and Cote D'Ivoire outscores Colombia by 3 or more.

I tend to agree with this. If it was more convenient to watch and get invested in, I probably would. I'm not sure how I would go about finding a rooting interest in something like EPL... My initial lean would be New England Revolution given my Boston heritage and a lack of any "local" team here in Memphis... but just don't know if I could bring myself to care as much as I do for a US side in WC match.
Once the US is eliminated, I'll still be able to enjoy the matches due to the extremely high skill level and fan passion... two things that are somewhat absent in MLS matches from what I understand.
