****Official 2015 Chicago Bears Offseason Thread **** (1 Viewer)

I'm betting the over in every Bears game this season. We are going to have to score 30+ pts to win any games.

Wait, we aren't going to win any games.

Should have traded down in the third, still picked up Grasu and more D players. Bit reachy for Grasu; 5th round grade. At least he'll have good chemistry with Kyle... Should have addressed C years ago.

Goldman was an excellent value pick, anchor for the 3-4 that everyone knows is critical, so that was good stuff.

Please show me where Grasu had a 5th round grade....every site had him rated in the 2nd or 3rd...Mayock called him a 1st round talent. He would have been the best C in the draft last year if he had come out and was rated the 2nd best C this year after Cameron.

Both Goldman and Grasu were very solid picks and I have seen both of them rated in the late 1st to early 2nd in at least one mock draft this year.

Best part about our draft from the first 2 days:

1) All 3 players were picked either later or right around where they were supposed to go. None of them were reaches

2) All 3 players have no character issues off the field and no injury issues from last year

3) All 3 players fill a need and will be starting at some point this year. So we filled needs and did it using value at that position and NOT reaching

Players we could get tomorrow in the 4th:

RB: Jay Ajai; David Cobb

CB/S: Josh Shaw; Ibrahim Campbell; Adrian Amos; Ekpre Olomu; Doran Grant

OT: T.J. Clemmings

OG: Tre Jackson

QB: Bryce Petty

You make up more stuff to support your pov than anyone I've ever seen. Goldman was a good pick. Grasu wasn't rated in late 1st or early 2nd by anyone with any sense. Quit making stuff up.

Pretty sure Mayock never said Grasu was a 1st round talent. I was watching and don't recall that statement. Can anyone else verify that claim?

http://m.chicagofootball.com/draft/2015/prospects/31/hroniss-grasu/

I followed up by looking at NFL Draft Scout & he was rated as the #2 C overall, projected to go in the 2nd round, so apparently Hub's team ranked him pretty low.

Feeling much better about Grasu after reading more on him.

thought I heard him mention it when the pick was announced, but not 100% sure.

From a guy that I follow and really respect: "Grasu is a decade-long starter. Goldman is the exact kind of beefy talent on the D-Line needed for the 34 to work. White is a potential star."

I'll stand corrected if Grasu starts for 10 years.

No one is making any stuff up. Learn to click on a link and actually use your eyes and brains to read and comprehend....I know - meatheads like you do not have that ability but maybe some day you will grow up.

"An interesting situation is that of center Hroniss Grasu. WalterFootball has him going 24th. RotoWorld projects him 19th. NFLDraftScout is calling him an early second-round pick."

So I went back and found the link of Mayock. I stand corrected - I believe now Mayock said the girl who announced the pick was a 1st round pick. But when I first saw the draft, I thought he meant Grasu. Here is the link for Mayock.

http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/videos/NFLN_Bears_select_Hroniss_Grasu/c3dcd946-6371-4791-a969-1527aecb8823

However, the link I posted above still had 2 sites (Walter football and rotoworld) having Grasu projected in the first round and NFL draft scout projecting him in the early 2nd. Not bad given we got him in the 3rd at a position of need. Also, given his familiarity with Kyle Long, this is a good thing for the Bears OL.

Any thoughts on Mettenburger? Worth trading for with Tennessee drafting Mariota? Or is someone like Petty better?

Mett isn't worth a draft pick. He's a career backup. Too many other needs to draft a qb now. Safety, CB, rb

Well I really liked the picks yesterday, but this one I don't get. This guy is just not very good. I have to think it would've been spent better on a trench player or safety.

Langford = 3rd down back. BPA? No.

Overview

2014: Honorable mention All-Big Ten. Started all 13 games at running back. 2013: Honorable mention All-Big Ten. Started all 14 games at running back. 2012: Played in nine games. Switched positions to WR during spring practices, but switched back to running back at the start of the regular season. 2011: Played in all 14 games. Switched positions to CB during spring practices and played primarily on special teams. 2010: Redshirted.

Pro Day Results
20-yard short shuttle: 4.27 seconds
Bench press: 19 reps of 225 pounds

Analysis

Strengths

Running back who has played wide receiver and cornerback at Michigan State. Improved a great deal since 2013 season. Has feet to avoid the trash and bounce it outside. Has burst around the corner and can separate from linebackers in pursuit. Finished his 2014 campaign with 22 carries of 15-plus yards, placing him fifth in running-back heavy Big Ten. Effective with chip blocks and will square up blitzers and take them on in pass protection. Has blocking and pass-catching talent to play on third downs. Good spin move and plus lateral foot quickness. Maintains balance through contact. Showed special-teams potential as a sophomore.

Weaknesses

Not a physical runner. Broke very few tackles this year and churned out pedestrian yards after contact. Gains extra yards by sliding laterally out of tackles rather than leg churn. Lacks commitment between the tackles. Seems content to absorb hits rather than dish them out. Scouts believe he will be a "bouncer" in pros, looking to take runs outside prematurely. Has burst, but not as much wiggle as anticipated.

Draft Projection: Round 4

Sources Tell Us

"I don't see him as a starter. I think he can be a backup or compete as a third down back, but he doesn't run tough enough to be able to project him as a starter in really any scheme." -- NFC East scout

"Didn't like him in his early games but liked him a lot better over the second half of the season. Asked around that program about him and they said he was playing hurt early so you should get the back you saw late in the year. That guy has a shot." -- AFC running back coach

NFL Comparison: Donald Brown

Bottom Line

Langford showed improvement from 2013 to 2014, but he doesn't accelerate through contact like you want to see. He has some speed and creativity, but without an ability to maximize his yards with each carry, teams could peg him as a "committee back" with an ability to play on third downs.

Decent young RB with solid potential and the ability to receive. The glaring thing w this draft is that the new regime is not addressing defense as much as hoped. It looks like this is going to be another year in which free agents and 2nd and 3rd year players are going to have to answer the bell. This has been met with disastrous results in the past. This is puzzling to say the least.

Also, it will take most rookies a year or two (or three) to make a full impact on game day. The failure to address defensive problems in this draft, will effect the 2016 season as well. Best a fan can hope for, is that the coaches have an eye on Defensive free agents after this year. If they cut a few key pieces (Cutler), it could free up cap space to help.

3 out of 4 picks to the offense. And the two skill guys not involved much between the tackles. Wonder how Fox feels about that.

Its just odd to me- you can get a scatback for lunch money in FA. Defensive ends or defensive backs you gotta pay fairly big even for average talent.

I agree. Didn't we add one with Quiz Rodgers?

Yup. Cost less than a million.

Jacquizz Rodgers cost the Bears 750k for a year, only 80k guaranteed.

Chis Conte got a 1 year contract for 1.5 million.

Somebody paid CHRIS CONTE twice as much as a serviceable 3rd down back costs.

Looking at the Pats and Seahawks and it seems as if these teams draft at the offensive and defensive lines and seem to take athletic players. They get it. They just keep going to the well and fortify the lines especially the Pats. This is a crucial pick for the Bears and I hope that they can do the same. The Pats just grab RBs that are not sexy and plug them in because the holes will be there. Of course it helps a lot when you don't have to march out a bust at QB like the Bears do

I finally called one... Even if it was one round late...

03/22/15 - Five Takeaways from this week's Pro Day workouts: 4. Sleepers at Penn State? The most impressive workout of the day was turned in by defensive back Adrian Amos, another Senior Bowl participant. The six-foot, 215-pounder was clocked as fast as 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash and stood out in the bench press, as well, lifting the bar 21 times, which would have tied him for fourth among all defensive backs testing in Indianapolis. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com

Overview

Selected honorable mention All-Big Ten 2012-2014. Started all 37 games over last three seasons with Penn State. Played in 12 games as a backup in 2011. Was selected All-Met and Baltimore City Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in high school.

Pro Day Results
40-yard dash: 4.37 and 4.4 seconds
Bench press: 21 reps of 225 pounds

Analysis

Strengths

Athletic with good range. Fluid in space with easy backpedal and smooth hips. Has ability to turn, run and recover when ball is in the air. Good route recognition. Trustworthy in coverage and is rarely out of position. Can line up defense. Offered versatility in coverage. Played some slot corner in sub packages. Outstanding in zone coverage at Penn State. Can crowd receivers and closes throwing windows. Allowed just 3.9 yards per target in 2014. Has twitch to trigger and close on throws.

Weaknesses

Doesn't display great sense of urgency in run support. Takes suspect angles against run from high to low and when lined up near line of scrimmage. Will throw body at runner, but carries no sting behind pads, sliding down target and finishing tackle near ankles at times. Average instincts. Hyper-focused on responsibility and seems unwilling to take chances. Would rather see it than sense it.

Draft Projection: Round 3 or 4

Sources Tell Us

"Great athlete but I don't always see him play to his ability." - AFC defensive backs coach

NFL Comparison

Husain Abdullah

Bottom Line

Amos checks all the boxes when it comes to strong football intelligence, a willingness to digest tape and cover skills. The biggest question is whether or not he can fit with a coordinator looking for playmakers and chance-takers. He must prove that he can play with greater overlap. Amos' scheme versatility is a big plus, but I wouldn't ask him to play inside the box very often.
