Wisc QB was totally oblivious to time left on clock. That was on him. He didn't even take a knee on prior play creating confusion as to whether or not the ball was live. Weird play call to center the ball with so little time left and no time outs. QB had no sense of urgency to spike it until about 2 seconds left, by then it was too late.
It wasn't totally on him. The refs completely ####ed up and deserve a ton of blame.

Agree. Why even run that play?

Officials royally ####ed up there. But what the hell was Stave doing? He ####ed that up too.
It seemed like he took a knee so he could spike it. I think he assumed the clock wasn't running as the ASU player was laying on it and the officials weren't doing anything. Dumb yes, but I feel really ripped off as a fan.

I don't know how you can blame the officials. That was totally on Wisconsin players. Brain fart. Nobody knew the clock was running.

Stave screwed up but he was lining his guys up with 10 seconds left....had plenty of time but officials didn't spot the ball.

Center the ball and run the rest of the clock.

Here's a dumb question: How is what Stave did on that play not considered an act of spiking the ball, or at least "throwing an incomplete pass"? His arm went forward and down.

Seriousl??? It's not normal to let a guy lay on the ball for 10 seconds for no reason. Obvious delay of game on ASU part.

Seriously, you don't think the officials should have...

A) Gotten the ASU player off the ball.

B) Threw a flag

C) Reset the ball

Any of those and the Badgers have a very easy FG attempt to win.

I think they messed up by blowing the play before dead when his knee never touched the ground. After that the Wisc players just stood around until the clock ran out. Only reason they ran up to spike it was because the crowd starting counting down. They had no idea how much time was left and that the clock was running. Wisc QB is chatting with the RB with 4 seconds left and clock running.

Wisc had no urgency. They weren't up at the line. They weren't trying to snap it. How can that be a delay? He wasn't delaying anything.

And what about the ASU player who was lollygagging in the Wisconsin backfield, making no attempt to get back on the right side of the ball?

We'll just have to disagree then. When a ball is spotted and a player from the other team jumps on it and holds it, that is a delay is my book.

If Wisconsin was trying to get to the line and snap the ball I'd agree with you. They were just standing around thinking the clock was stopped.

He 100% without a doubt took a knee. Watch it again if you still have it on the DVR. Took a knee and his lineman got blocked back into him forcing him to immediately get back up, which is when he went and sat the ball on the ground. The announcers missed the knee and they never replayed it, but its there without a doubt.

They were standing around waiting for the ball to be spotted. What reason would they have to believe the clock was stopped.

They were waiting for the go signal and assumed the refs weren't going to count off 15 seconds for no reason...

Fair point. But either the clock SHOULD have been stopped, or the officials should have been in hurry-up mode and never allowed ASU to jump on the ball like they did and prevent them from putting it back in play.

I know the Badgers aren't/weren't going to a national championship game but it still sours the rest of the season for me a little. Again, if they lose on a missed FG so be it, but to not be given that chance was a travesty in my opinion on par with some of the bigger officiating flubs that I have seen lately (and it seems like those of us in Wisconsin see a lot).

Of course they thought the clock was stopped. The ref was making no effort to spot the football. In fact, instead of reaching for the football, the ref was engaging an ASU player in conversation.

I actually thought they spotted the ball and then the ASU player jumped on it for whatever reason (fumble?delay?). I will check the DVR to see.

I watched it in slo-mo and it looks like he may have taken a knee but I don't think you can say for sure based on the camera angle. He kind of bumped into his own man as he was going down. Either way, I have no idea what he was doing after that. He just kind of walks around, says something to the ref, says something to his rb and lets the clock run out. If he was getting his team to line up to spike it the refs could have called a delay. There was no reason to call a delay because az st player wasn't delaying anything. it's not the refs responsibility to take into account how much time is on the game clock.

I'm more angry about this than the fail Mary, I can almost understand that call... This one is inexcusable, IMO.

Great observation. I missed that the first time around, but just watched it again. Stave definitely did take a knee, then put the ball on the ground.

So it's completely on the officials for allowing ASU to delay the game and failing to put the ball back in play.

Watching it again I think it's obvious the Wisc QB thought the whistle meant the ref stopped the clock. They all get up quickly to get ready to spike it and then the ref blows the whistle indicating that the ball was dead (The qb took a knee) NOT that they were stopping the clock. Then he realized the clock was running and tries to spike it but too late. Right after he starts yelling at the ref as to say I thought you stopped the clock. I don't know why he assumed the whistle meant a clock stoppage and not that the last play was over. That loss is on him.

No, it's not. It wouldn't have mattered if they were ready to run the play or not. The ASU player lying on the ball, and the umpire, never gave them a chance to run it.

Yeah, except the QB can't put the ball in play until the ref spots it and then okays the O to go ahead. There's no rational way you can put this on WISC. I assume you have to be fishing.

If Wisc was right there trying to snap it I'd agree a delay could be called but they're just standing there thinking the clock wasn't running. Bottom line, Wisc incorrectly assumed the clock was stopped. I don't know how not a single player on the field didn't see that the clock was moving. They're all oblivious. Somebody should have been jumping up and down, pointing at the clock

Doesn't matter what he thought. The officials should have seen that it wasn't (because Stave did take a knee). If he had picked up the ball and started running in the other direction, would it have been OK to just let the clock keep running because he thought it was a live ball?

They should have been in their stance on the line. They're all just standing there with their hands on their hips. No time outs, you center the ball and then don't know that you have to set up and snap it quick because the clock will be running? That was a mental gaffe. They should never have allowed anything like that to even have a chance of happening.

And again, that doesn't matter. It's inexcusable for the officials to allow the final 17 seconds to run off the clock without spotting the ball. Regardless of what Wisconsin was or wasn't doing (which was mostly a direct reaction of their confusion to what the officials were/weren't doing).

No, but he didn't do that. The ref blew the whistle to alert the players the play was dead. Then wisc just stood there for no reason and let the clock run out.

Bucky fan here. THey #### the bed. You kick the field goal, not run a play to the middle
It's fair to see it that way, but I don't see how they were wrong in what they were thinking. Kneel on the ball, 17 seconds, if the officials had acted properly, they would have had time to execute the end game as planned.

I actually like the call a lot to get in the middle and then kill the clock as then you don't have to worry about the kickoff or anything like that. I think the refs were confused when Stave put the ball down and never recovered.

But the officials' lack of action after blowing the play dead is what cost Wisconsin the chance to run another play. Why can't you see that?

(Wasn't rooting for either team, for full disclosure.)

I get that. Sorry but I'm seeing a lot of vitriol on teh facebooks and twitters from my homer friends and it's getting out of hand. It boils down to one point. Kick the field goal and walk out of there with the win.
