At Alabama we're seeing a transition in players leaving early, which is good for all of us. Kids are learning that IF you really have first-round level talent, you can benefit from coming back for your senior year. Ragland is showing that at Bama.

Of the 8 possible early exits, AShawn Robinson and Derrick Henry are the only 2 confirmed to leave...5 others are confirmed to stay ( Allen, Foster, Williams, Jackson, Harrison)...with OJ Howard left to announce.
Not prepared to take a pay cut?

Thought about mentioning that but you were quick!

Honestly though...Ragland made himself $15-20M by returning. A lot of kids graduate by their Junior or RS Junior year. Glad they're starting to see the value in staying and even getting a grad degree.

I think OJ Howard's stock will never be higher.

Or he can come back and catch 18 balls for 240 yards again.
The driver is draft grade, which must be high enough to consider but not commit to. Good point though, coaches are involved and I'm sure a offensive players questions are all about opps.

Yea if kids are projected to be a first-second round pick they are nuts to come back. You're off on that one Gump. Way off. Injuries, year of lost income, can put out bad tape etc. One positive example does not make a rule.

For guys like this, there is very little benefit to staying for a degree. They will have the money to go get it later.

You misunderstood. These are kids with potential first round talent that are not getting first round grades. Ragland would have been s third rounder or so last year, now he's a mid-first. Obviously Allen, Foster, and these other guys are not getting first round grades either.

If Ragland is a first rounder this year then maybe it was worth staying. What if Ragland tore his knee up like Jaylen Smith? Was it worth it then? What if he's not a first rounder and only a second rounder this year? Staying also means it delays him hitting free agency a year (and his real big payday).

Sure...risks they are well-aware of. No one is selling them a scam...it's all laid out for them to decide.

Smith and everyone like him have million dollar insurance policies for injuries. Coming back, not getting injured and sucking on the other hand...

Love this hire.
He's a good guy and from a X/O standpoint, it's a good fit. Will be interesting to hear your reports on him navigating the culture.....I'm counting on you!
He spent several years at Oregon State, so I'm sure he's quite familiar with Oregon's culture. I'm excited about his ability to recruit in California, which is where most of Oregon's top talent comes from. And yeah, having a defensive system in place to protect 31-0 halftime leads would be pretty nice too.

I'm not talking about the state's culture. I'm talking about the culture within the football program.

Oh, THAT culture. Well, I don't think the offense is changing direction any time soon, so if he wants to stay employed, I would guess he'll need to find a way to succeed with the talent that is there and that he can pull in.

This is sorta what I am elluding too....there needs to be a commitment to making the team well rounded. He's a fantastic recruiter, but he can't do it on his own so if he's left out there on an island, he's doomed. That goes for anyone that I can think of though.

Yes, but Oregon has put more players in the NFL on the defensive side of the ball than offensive. The talent is definitely there. Recall the championship game loss to Auburn. Oregon's defense did its job better than most SEC teams. And it was Oregon's defense that sealed the Rose Bowl win over Russell Wilson. Nick Aliota was able to find the right balance for the Ducks. Don Pellum is a nice guy, but he's the epitome of the Peter Principle. I think Hoke will succeed.

Hope you're right GM...he's a really good dude. He wasn't ready to run a big time program and get used to "We just need to coach 'em up" when the defense doesn't do as they should. It was one of the things that sent him packing in AA...he always blamed himself (to protect the players) rather than holding them accountable. The best coaches do a nice mix of both. If he can learn that and get support from the coaching staff, he'll be fine.

Who knows if anything will actually happen, but the timing is bad with their biggest recruiting weekend starting today.

This is from top 10 overall Ben Davis:

247 has them as the #4 class. If people were on the fence they are probably going to jump. Alabama will get like 12 more 5*s out of this

Finally watching the Terrell Davis "A Football Life". Man, Ray Goff was even worse than I thought. Which is saying something.

eta - Wow, when I typed that I hadn't even gotten to the part where Goff was badmouthing Davis to NFL scouts.

I remember in 1993, when they played UF, Goff had Eric Zeier throw the ball 65 times and gave 6 carries to his running backs. 3 by future NFL HOF Davis. Afterwards he said those runs were 6 wasted plays.

I'm no Alabama defender but they week before they are playing USC and they open with FSU next year. I'm ok with a layup after that. Not many schools are doing that.

Next, you'll be wearing blue & orange jorts.

(no offense PDP, I'm sure you look amazing in jorts)

Whoa whoa whoa there, Billy Bob. I'm with you all the way here but you absolutely owe the entire state of Western Kentucky an apology with this gross mischaracterization here. Layup? The Hilltoppers? They had LSU on the ropes!

I wasn't taking a shot at Bama's scheduling. Just acknowledging the Hilltoppers' greatness.

I look amazing in anything and when I chant 'SEC' I sound like Pavarotti.

I just realized your last 5 years of CFB have consisted of:

-Bama title

-Bama title

-FSU beating auburn in the most excruciating way possible

-OSU title

-Bama title

How do you still watch?

My dad always told me the world needed ditch diggers too (my dad is an alcoholic who used to try to make a living by going to strip clubs to sell overpriced lingerie to the strippers or the girls there with their boyfriends).

WKU is not a layup. No different than playing Oregon really.

Ironically, he always asked the girls the same question.

I'd hang out with your dad before most of my own family.

This is 20 years ago, but he also bought a balloon machine (you know the plastic balloons that people fill with stuffed animals) and he instead filled it with lingerie and tried to sell those. When that didn't work he just tried to fill them with stuffed animals.

My dad would be a funny thread. I also went into his closet once to get a pair of his shoes and found a huge giant dildo. I was like 11.
