The only bowl that has been around for 100 years is the Rose Bowl.

Maybe he meant collectively? Like maybe there's 20 people who each feel invested in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.

I mean, how could we have a real bowl season without the Arizona Bowl or whichever one it is that the people in the state of Arizona can't even watch it on TV?????

 
I really do think this Heisman race is going to be close.

Christian McCaffrey had 3,496 All Purpose Yards. Next on that list is San Jose State's Tyler Ervin who had 2,410 APY. McCaffrey was a staggering 1,086 yards ahead of Ervin here.

Derrick Henry lead the NCAA in rushing with 1,986 yards. Next on that list? Not Fournette. It's Christian McCaffrey with 1,847 rushing yards. So the distance between the two isn't that great. The largest separation is on rushing TDs where Henry amassed 23 TDs to McCaffrey's 13 TD (combined).

Maybe Deshaun Watson sneaks in to win it? 3500 Passing Yards + 889 Rushing Yards is pretty damn solid (though Mariota last year was 4450 + 770 on the ground).

I think Watson has as good a case as Henry. Both were magnificent this season, but "QB on the #1 team" with eye-popping numbers too boot would give him the edge in my uneducated view.

That said, I think it's McCaffrey. What an amazing season.

Oh, I don't care and I don't have a wager on it (Sportsbook capped me at $10 for future's bets :rolleyes: ) but would point out that Leonard Fournette was once -250 and a stone cold lock to win it all until, oooops, Alabama.

The "offsides" they called was because one of the players on the right side of the kicker ran to the left before the ball was kicked. That was very poorly explained. But if you look closely they only had 10 players on the field so he makes six on one side and three on the other. I don't know if the rule says there must be four on each side or says no more than six on one side. If it says four on each side they got the call right. If it says no more than six on one side, they screwed up because they probably assumed there was 11 players on the field.

Even sideways? I would have guessed it meant they couldn't start > 5 yards behind the ball, but running parallel doesn't seem to be any great advantage.

I'm not sure how the rule is actually written. What I've heard the rule is is that players are limited to a five yard running start. It doesn't look like any player did get more than a five yard running start in any direction, but the ref that through the flag wouldn't have been able to see how far the player running east/west ran before the kick, so maybe he thought he did.I honestly don't know what the hell he saw that made him throw the flag. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but there's not much to give. Honestly, I think he just botched the call.

He got the call correct. There were 3 men to the right of the kicker. The rule is 4.

This is correct....one can argue "it all worked out" but the penalty called on the field was :bs: There was no offsides...not even close.

First of all, there are 4 people to the right of the kicker. Watch a video or a gif. That picture is pretty funny though, as the guy furthest to the right is hiding someone behind him.

Second, the call was for offsides, and at no point did anyone suggest otherwise. Only after the fact did people figure out the technical illegal procedure penalty which is due to the guy furthest to the left of the kicker in that picture, who is supposed to be lined up inside of the mark on the field just inside of him (red arrow second pic).

So basically they got the call completely wrong, said it was unable to be reviewed (I agree it's BS), and people think it's justified because a similar call was clearly missed. I'm not sure what I think about the latter.

If you play the gif, you can clearly see that there are 4. One guy runs out from behind another, so a still photo would only show 3.

 
Guy I went to HS with is the new OC @ Arizona State. I'll be breaking all the relevant Sparky information in this thread from now on.

He is an alum, but would have been a horrendously bad career decision. Unless he was promised 'Coach in Waiting'...but who counts on that.

Gilbert reportedly going to Texas as OC, 2 yr contract. But he hasn't called plays in his last two jobs. :mellow:

Heading into his critical third season, Strong will turn Texas’ offense over to Sterlin Gilbert,a 37-year-old position coach at Tulsa. Gilbert has strong Texas high school coaching ties, but he hasn’t called plays in his last two college jobs.

Multiple reports surfaced Thursday afternoon that Gilbert had agreed to a two-year contract. He did not return messages left by the American-Statesman; 247Sports first reported on the hire, though Texas officials had no comment and a Tulsa spokesman said, “Reports coming from there are false at this time.”

Gilbert spent one year as a graduate assistant under Art Briles at Houston in 2005. Asked about Texas hiring one of his protegés, Briles told ESPN, “We have to work harder now. It’s like when someone gets into your bank account and steals your identity.”

At Tulsa, Gilbert holds the title of co-offensive coordinator. But it was Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery who called the plays this season for the Golden Hurricane, which went 6-6 and will face Virginia Tech in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 26.

Seems like there's a lot of coaches turning down jobs this cycle. I wonder how many of them are going to look back and think they missed their big break.

I think people realize if you jump to a sinking ship you're probably going to end up going down with it. And while you will end up getting another job, it may not be better than the job you left behind.

Kelly has a chance to win a title at FSU next year and a loaded defense returns. If that happens he would be a reasonably hot commodity as a HC somewhere. He would be insane to jump into Malzhan's dumpster fire and that's why he was never leaving.
