I actually have a pretty bad feeling about this game. I think our offense is worse than the Saints defense. Key will be our defense. I don't think it will be the shootout everyone is expecting. I'll go with the super common 18-17 score.

So who is a better OC? This McVay guy or Shanahan?

Hard to compare, since Shanahan has more of a track record.

For now, I'm going to say that Shanahan has shown me more:

1. Offensive success in Houston, Washington (partially), and Atlanta

2. In Washington, he showed he was not a "system guy" by tailoring an offense to the skillset of his QB (Griffin, not Grossman lol). I think that takes something, and I will give him props for that.

3. McVay may be held in this esteem in time but just don't think he has the track record to be compared yet.

New Orleans D blows but I still question if Shanahan was a major problem. He's in ATL and their offense now blows. Cousins is playing better with lesser skill players around him.

Redskins have faced weak defenses before and not put up 40 offensive points (7 points on defense). So, obviously the Redskins are not going to score 47 points every week -- and likely not again this season. That said, you have to take advantage of bad defenses before you can score against good ones, so give them props for executing and finishing off drives. It's significant progress over last year.

But nice try trying to minimize their accomplishments.

The game wasn't on TV here so I only have the radio broadcast to go by. It seemed to me that the NO defense stunk so bad that everything the Redskins did on offense worked. I don't think the Skins could have committed enough penalties and turnovers to lose this game.

The reason I say the NO defense was horrible was because I heard "Another crushing block by Josh LeRibeus". Josh LeRibeus is just not good, and if he's wiping out defenders with blocks then that defense isn't an NFL-level defense. Nobody on NO seemed able to tackle Matt Jones, who's quite adept at 2-yard runs and getting tackled by the first guy. Crowder sounded like he was wide open all day, and the guy's a 4th round rookie pick with a lot to learn. The Skins offense is improving, but to answer your question I'd say it was horrible NO defense more than anything.

I also don't recall hearing many Redskin offensive mistakes besides Trent Williams's usual false start.

First of all, I acknowledge that the New Orleans defense was simply awful...and so you have to take the 40+ points with a great of salt...BUT, that said, really nice win for the Redskins. And I don't say really nice win because of the score, but rather from some of the encouraging things I saw:

1. Hustle and good execution: they talked about this on the broadcast, but one thing that really stood out to me was the terrific downfield blocking from lineman, wide receivers and others. This hustle and execution routinely turned small plays into big plays. Go back and watch Jone's 78 yard TD reception...good moves from MJ but GREAT downfield blocking.

2. Solid decision making from Cousins. 4 times this year Cousins has thrown 0 interceptions. 4 times the Redskins have won. He possibly should have had one today on that deflection, but was saved due to a NO penalty (thought the refs were fairly kind to the Skins today). Other than that, it was encouraging to see him throw the ball away in the Redzone to get the field goal instead of throwing the usual INT.

Another fact I read today. Over the last three games, Cousins has thrown 8 TDs vs. 1 interception. Is this a trend or is this a fluke, since two of the defenses were Tampa and New Orleans?

3. Improved third quarter. OK, my play of the game, maybe play of the entire season, was the fourth down stop on NO's first drive of the 3rd quarter. Typical set up: Redskins up first half. Second half starts, NO drives the field, looks like they are going to score. That 4th down stuff when NO had inches to go propelled the team in the 3rd quarter and took the life out of NO. I believe it broke NOs spirit and sealed the game. I believe that's the play of the game and maybe of the season.

4. Putting your foot on the throat. How many times have we seen the Redskins get a lead and then just wilt. Today they stomped on New Orleans and kept their focus four quarters.

I know we beat a team with a weak defense but what you have to understand is that we've played weak teams before and either lost or squeaked out a win. What I saw today was a team that was focusing and executing correctly the whole game.

I still think we're likely a 6 win team but good win this week and something to build on for sure.

Exactly. And next week, versus a team that they will almost certainly lose to (Carolina) is another big test. Try to keep your poise and play correctly throughout the game. In short, don't just look like a bunch of clown-holes.

5. I almost forgot to mention...it was nice to see Gruden stick with the running game, even BEFORE we had a sizeable lead. it was good to see Morris gets some carries and do something with them.

Gruden doesn't really get the fact that you should stick with the run even when you are behind...I agree they need to do that. I mean, one of the reasons Cousins throws so many interceptions in some of these games is that as soon as we get down one score, Gruden has him throwing every down.

Nice to finally be on the giving end of a blowout. Seems like it's been awhile since that happened. Yes, New Orleans defense is awful, but still, putting up 40 points on offense is a big deal.

Kirk with another nice game. Good to see some improvements from him as the season has gone on. He seems to have bounced back nicely from that awful games against the Jets.

Not sure what happened, but the defense looked good too. Seemed like it was going to be a long day after the 1st quarter, but the defense stepped up and shut down Brees the rest of the game.

Big stretch the next 3 weeks: @Carolina, New York, Dallas. If we can somehow go 2-1 and get to 6-6, it could be an interesting final 4 games.

Related note: I think signing Hopkins may be one of the most significant additions this year.

Last year, we would routinely kick it to the 10, with teams starting on the 30...it makes a huge difference. Hopkins is fairly accurate as well.

At the same time, there are a lot of former Skins kickers out there: Gano, Forbath, Suisam, etc. They all get recycled.

Possibly my favorite thing about the team improvements right now is that they are playing well at home. As a stupid season ticket holder, that's important to me. So many years of attending games where they play like complete crap at home. This year, they've played well in Raljon and it makes it so much more fun to go there. Win @ Carolina and the next two weeks hosting the Giants and Cowboys could be awesome.

I said just above here that the Redskins will be lucky to be a six win team here, so I don't think anyone is going to label me one of these unrealistic fans.

That said, again, if you compare this Redskins team with the Redskins team last year, there is marked improvement. Last year we don't take advantage of a weak defense.

You are reading too much in to my statements. I am just saying the team is making progress.

It's not like the Eagles where you all started out thinking you would be in the Super Bowl and now find yourselves at 4-5. Everyone had us pegged as a 4 win team, bottom dwellers for life, with a turnover machine at QB. So basically, the performance is encouraging for us, because we weren't supposed to do anything like you all.
