***Official 2016 Masters*** (1 Viewer)

'86' was great if you have a chance to watch...always love the 'Be Good!'...'It Is.' story.  And the background on the Macgregor Method putter and Verne's 'Yes Sir' I'd never heard.

Nicklaus was so relaxed thru the entire thing...a contrast from today's great players.  Biggest brass balls ever.

Van de Velde and Norman were worse. He still shot 73.
All are devasting chokes, but all three are so different though.

Norman just went off the rails from the start.  Slow, drawn out decent with no chance the last few holes.

Van de Velde ...worst case of nerves, foggy head ever seen in a major.  I think worst choke ever.  He saw he had it, one hole, just needs a double bogey and he wins ...and just couldn't take it.

Spieth coming off of the front side with four straight birdies, bets taken off the table on Spieth at the betting sites (I think?), looking strong ...then started steering it in.  The 12th seems impossible, including chunks.  But then the guys comes back with 2 birdies and a chance.  Kid was a zombie at the ceremony.

The media isn't going to let him off the hook, his meltdown was way worse than Van de Velde or Norman.  Arnie lost a 6 shot lead at the U.S. Open on the back nine but I'm not 80 so I've only read about it.  Van de Velde was a fringe player and Norman was known as a guy who succumbs to nerves before his Masters meltdown.  For Spieth, think how much the narrative changes as a result of yesterday.  If he holds on and wins, the start of his career is the best of all time.  Three majors and two green jackets at age 22.  He would be without question the face of golf.  Just a huge fall for him and the media will report it as such.

I don't like Spieth and I think this tournament exposed some of his negative side in terms of personality and slow play.  However, I give him a lot of credit for how he handled himself with the media in the aftermath.  The media is still going to properly frame his epic meltdown though.
from what I heard this morning the prevailing line is he'll get over it.   the media seems to be soft selling the meltdown portion of it.

i felt really bad this morning, because I'm sick and battling a respiratory infection.   but i woke up feeling bad not just for me, but for Speith.   I imagine he woke up completely numb today.

it will be interesting to see his reaction to this.   I assume he's going to work to get whatever is bugging him out of his swing.

But the problem he had on 12 wasnt' just the swing.  It was his thought process.  He said I was trying to cut an 8 iron in there.   Wrong.   Trying to hit a cut on that hole brings the whole right half of the green, and water into play.   Its a high risk, high reward shot.    A better thought process is I'm going to aim 20 feet left of the flag and hit it 150 yards and If I go long that's ok, but i'm not going short and I'm not going right.    He had just hit so many good short irons previous to this one shot, the idea that you'd hit a cut shot on 12 is ludicrous.  That was the mental mistake.    The drop zone 2nd shot was another mental mistake, compounded by a physical mistake.    He didn't lose the Masters because of his swing, he lost the masters because of bad course management at a critical moment.

I just hope the collapse doesn't slow him down even more.  You wonder if he comes away thinking if I was just more deliberate i could have mitigated the damage.  They gotta start administering penalty strokes. The worst part is you have a young golfers all over the world emulating the guy and clogging up courses everywhere.  If he and Day are ever in a late pairing at a major they may never finish.  I blame the coaches and sports psychologists who preach a drawn out routine and visualization of entire shot from contact to result.  On top of that he consults with his caddie on every aspect of every shot. His "we" shtick in the interviews after the round was almost comical. Must've said we 100 times. I get that a caddie is important but he's got it way overblown. Just hit the thing already.

I love that the media is ripping Cam Newton again by talking about how Spieth handled his interviews after the collapse. And they are bringing up the kid from UNC who also handled himself well after the loss to Villanova. Cam Newton is a dooosh.

I agree 100% that he thinks way too much...which is why he does that stupid looking at the hole thing sometimes when he putts.

I'm not going to criticize the kid for thinking too much, it's obviously been successful for him

But in crunch time yesterday he thought poorly. Thats 3 days of leading the Masters and the pressure of going wire to wire twice in a row finally catching up to you and frying your brain. The idea of cutting an 8 iron onto 12 is basically moronic

Yeah, #### him. Nobody cares what that ####bird has to say.

I do that quite a bit, but more often on long lag putts. Works great for me.
I have heard that looking at the hole for some reason guards against deceleration. I've heard it from a few different sources.  I gave it a shot last year but just didn't feel comfortable for me.  Putting is as much about comfort and preference as anything.  No problem with Spieth looking at the hole for me, more of an issue that he does it intermittently. Works for him though, that's for sure.

Really interested to see how Spieth handles pressure situations going forward. If he chokes like that again, he could end up like one of these guys who's always in the top 20 but never seems to make a serious run at a major. I watched an interview with Dustin Johnson yesterday and he said he was happy with his game. And hey, $620K for 4 days playing golf is pretty amazing, but a champion wouldn't say that imo. Being that top guy means you have to face a lot more pressure situations and fear of screwing up, and being embarrassed.

Also Jack has said repeatedly that all the coaches and technology can be detrimental. When he was struggling, he only had himself to work through it and he ended up stronger for it.

He'll be fine. He's still world class, the best player out there. 1-1-2-4-2 last 5 majors.  He's the likely favorite in every major this year and for sure at the masters next year unless someone else gets crazy hot.  He just needs to get used about hearing about it a lot for at least another year.  They'll talk about it at every major and at next year's Masters it'll be the story, even if Tiger returns.

He was one of the worst putters on tour last year under 10 feet.  Missed big ones in the British and US Opens.  He's improved clearly...but I'm not convinced that yip is gone.
I hear you. He was liquid drano last week though. Rory would have won by 8 shots if Spieth putted for him.

I agree on DJ.  He is a special talent with about every club except the putter.  But I think he wins a major soon, maybe this year.

DJ's game reminds me a lot of Phil's situation before he won his first major.  Always at the top, just couldn't pull it off because of putter.

Methinks DJ has a few other interests outside golf.  This will prevent him from fulfilling his full potential.  And to be honest, he'll probably have a lot more fun life, just not as good a career.

T52 isn't exactly worst on tour. One percentage point (88.2 - 89.2) away from top 15.  Better than names like Stensen, Keegan, Oosthuizen, Bubba, Zach Johnson, Justin Rose, Phil, Schwartzel, Webb Simpson...He's actually worse this year inside 10'

Inside 5' his numbers drop, but still not "worst on tour" range.

First on tour last year in total one-putts per round (2nd so far this year).

I hope he was heavily intoxicated to help justify that decision.
Yes, he was. It was an embarrassment.

Little tip for those that attend in the future...

They serve beer until 5 PM. And on Sunday, they don't start serving beer until noon or when the last local church calls and tells them they are finished (Whichever is later)

Would of loved to see him sneak under the rope when Tom Watson was getting all his hugs and then your boss shows up with open arms.  Seconds later tackled in the walkway.

That would have been a great story to bring back to the office.

On Friday afternoon, I was standing about 100 yrds down from the first tee box just  adjacent to the members proshop as DJ teed off.  As that was happening this smokeshow named Ines Sainz set up literally right next to me.  I'm pretty sure it wasn't me that DJ was staring at the entire time he walked past us either.  Don't get me wrong - I was staring at her too.  It was impossible not to.  BOING!

Pretty awesome highlights.  (* I was the guest of a Member so...)

#4: Berckmans Place.  It's tough to describe  I think what I thought was the coolest is the memorabilia they have in there - Bobby Jones' Grand Slam Trophies, and Eisenhower's golf clubs. Oh yea and you get to putt on 3 replica greens with an Augusta caddie- an experience that takes about an hour.

#3: A tour of Augusta National's Wine Cellar- considered one of the finest in the world.

#2: Going down into Butler's Cabin.  My wife and I got a picture of us there and John Boehner (yes that John Boehner) jumped into the photo- I don't know why.  Where they do the Champions interview is in the very bottom of the cabin - there are rooms upstairs where some members stay.  The whole Butlers Cabin thing is staged with monitors, lights cameras etc.  The room is  a lot smaller than you can imagine.  But what an experience.

#1: We went down to the CBS TV trailer just as the Masters went live one afternoon.  This was just incredible.  I counted 22 giant screen monitors - each monitor divided into 9 separate camera views.  There is one main director - directing the entire show.  I've never seen anything quite like it.  That The Masters comes across so seamless and smooth is a testament to just how talented the tv folks are.  Very fun to see something like that transpire live.

Just a great week.

Ouch. That is pretty embarrassing. Was it somebody's annual badge?
We do something with a group where we get lodging (super nice), shuttles, a place right outside Magnolia Lane to eat breakfast/drink, Lunch/drink, dinner/drink and then back to the lodging. And I am quite sure we wont be invited back next year.

Thinking of going to the masters this year. At least looking into prices. Anybody know the difference between general admission and a row badge?

I'm looking for a Monday Practice round pass. If anyone has an extra or knows where to get one let me know. If I don't get one I plan on making the hour drive anyway and hope for the best. Normally I can get there around lunchtime and find someone leaving and buy their pass for $100 or less. That was 5 years ago and I don't know if that's still possible. Besides, I would rather be on the grounds as early as possible.

This is one of the few sporting events that I'd rather want to see the venue than the players perform.  I don't plan on making it this year, but in the next couple year's I'll make the trip down to Augusta.

Go for a practice round and then go back home to watch the tournament on tv, best way to do it.

I agree 100% with this. The practice rounds are a little more laid back and to me seem less crowded. Also, you can take in your camera and get some great shots like this.

Augusta

The Masters

And to top all of that off, I love watching the golfers skip balls across the pond at 16.
