Yeah, does not surprise me.  I love St. Martin but there are large pockets of poverty there.  They are going to be desperate. How is help going to reach all these devastated islands with Jose rolling up?

A good propane fueled in home generator comes in at about 8k.  thats installed with a nice tank and a platform that it sits on.  I almost pulled the trigger on one last year but couldnt stomach shelling that out for something I would only use less then 10x a year.

This is the year I am changing my mind.  The piece of mind one must have eyeballing a storm and know unless somethign crazy happens you have power has to be super comforting.

When Charlie came through lost power for 3 days some folks went without for over a week.The other 3 hurricanes that came through that year never lost power. Didn't lose it for Matthew last year.Guess its just luck of the draw.

 
Good news: Irish family living in Turks and Caicos welcomed a newborn hours before the storm hit - and all survived and are safe.

Bad news: They named the baby girl "Maebh"

brits already have boots on the ground in anguilla and BVI (positive about the former- pretty sure about the latter)

eta: I read that the dutch and french have people on the way. but yeah- not sure what Jose does to those plans.

If this thing levels Naples, I guess my mom stays up with us or with my brother in Jax. Are we talking months of rebuildimg and recovery? Years?

 
There will be very little additional weather related info that will drive any decisions between now and roughly 6pm EST.  Model error will cut roughly in half by tomorrow to inside the diameter of the eye by a good margin, but by then would assume would be too late to evacuate to anywhere but a shelter.  

Each little wobble will be looked at for a trend, but really there's not much to really be waiting for at this point if trying to make plans.

you can buy a 10Kw portable and have an electrician install a manual transfer switch for half or more than half that cost.  roll it out, plug it in (external cord port is the key) and WaLa!

My brother took his family out of LaBelle this morning using US27 up the middle of the state, it'll get you all the way to the turnpike.  He said he had no delays.  My parents and grandparents are staying in LaBelle, us In Ft Myers/Alva area.  We're ready.  Or at least we think we are.

 
Palm Beach, FL.  Parents and their kids playing joyfully in the waves.  Just...wow.  I feel like some grumpy old dude thinking "What are these stupid kids doin?!"

 
Aside from cost, the main reason I don't get a generator is I worry about asphyxiation and electrocution just to keep the refrigerator running.

You don't have to keep it indoors. But it is safe (if noisy) to keep it indoors in a room with open windows.

EDIT: Thinking some more ... I've only seen them used truly indoors briefly. In open garages, sunrooms, or porches? All the time.

If these families are planning on sheltering in place once Irma arrives, there's no reason not to go play at the beach right now  :shrug:  

 
New track shows the strengthening and path that have been discussed in here purely theoretically prior.  As I had suspected (and culdeus and others with more knowledge had confirmed appeared to be happening) post-eyewall-replacement this has been gathering strength again and is expected to be a Cat5 again.  All models are also now centered on roughly Naples or just south, though of course we're still almost 48 hours away from landfall in that scenario. 

Current wind speeds are 155.  157 is Cat5.

Every hurricane here they have to go through all of the generator precautions. Best case portable generator is kept outside away from house. 

 
Reminds me of Charley so much. They had no idea where it was going even up to -2 hours. One minute I was sitting on my couch in North Port, 15 minutes later i was on I-75 hightailing it North as it came into Charlotte Harbor............................

I need to look a bit more, but a cursory look at the generac brand to run my house as if there wasn't an issue was about $5k.  We don't have gas lines in our neighborhood, but my neighbor said the gas company will come out and give you a tank, installed, for free as long as you buy gas from them.  I've always thought it worth it, just hadn't gotten around to doing my due diligence.

this was from my electrician;

Portable Generator Connection
- provide and install new 200 amp main breaker meter center (MC2040B1200R)
- provide and install manual interlock kit (ECSBPK05) and 50 amp breaker
- provide and install 50 amp generator inlet
- provide 10' - 50 amp generator cord
- permit fee

Generac XG10000E - 10000 watt continuous running 12500 surge watt rating recommended $2099+tax

If you do it the right way, you would install a transfer switch on your circuit panel. The switch allows you to cut off the main power (which would be dead if you are using your generator) and then turn on a feed that is attached to your generator outside. (never ever ever use a generator inside the house).

Once the generator is on and is feeding electricity back into your panel, you turn on and off the zones you want/dont want. Usually your kitchen to keep the fridge running and the bedrooms for lights and such. 

The most important thing about the switch is that afterward, the guys working on the lines can do so safely and not worry about a reverse charge from your house b/c technically your supplied power would be off and the generator is only feeding the box....not the box and your main. 

Once power is back to the block, turn the generator off and switch power back to your main line. 

the other way to use the generator is to just feed extension cords to it and run what ever appliances and items you want individually off of those.

any one....an electrician would wire your panel and run a feed plug outside to where you would be running your generator. 

the switch is just a additional item for whatever generator you have.

Its not a bad idea to build a small shelter with good ventilation for the generator near the transfer switch. Or get a small rubbermaid shed/garbage container with ventilation (drill some large holes) to put it in. It will protect the unit from rain and debris in case you need to use it during the storm.

Buy a tank. Those companies fleece customers that are forced to buy from them.
