*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

We are in a non evac zone on the highest land in the county with a new roof put on two weeks ago. Still considering leaving but I think it's best to stay. Terrified of getting out there and not finding any gas or hitting traffic.
Even 75 looks okay now. Not sure what it will look like once you get a pregnant woman packed and ready to go. Stay safe.

With my son, storm surge wasn't the issue in Temple Terrace. It was potentially Cat3 winds in a newer apartment building and first storm he had faced by himself.

After a frantic 30 minutes, just got a hold of my son at USF and told him to leave Tampa and take the back roads home. Roads don't look too bad if he leaves soon.

He had muted his phone. Wife's coworker has a son in same apartment complex and had to go bang on his door.
Good luck Bill - I couldn't imagine watching the storm unfold knowing he was in the path.

I am glad I left Tampa.  Traffic on 75 is going to be awful probably starting now.  We left at 1:30 and made it up here around 5 or so.

My sister has a house on Cudjoe Key.  It sits on stilts about 12 feet above sea level.  It's not newer construction (80's maybe?) but they have hurricane shutters etc.  I wonder if it will be standing after today?

I ####### love the Florida Keys.
Holy crap. The stilts will be huge for storm surge, but Cudjoe is going to get 140 mph winds. I hope it survives. I hope the Keys survive, period. One of my favorite places too.

Amazingly Google Maps is showing green on 75N, even thru Ocala. By 830, I dunno.
I took a lot of the back roads to get to Atlanta yesterday that you and others mentioned. I don't think it was any faster, but at least I was moving, there was gas to be had, and I saw part of America other than interstate. Thanks to all of you for the recommends.

As I mentioned earlier, I've hung out with her a bunch of times. She does not mind accentuating them when she goes out. It's dangerous, hard not to stare.
Did you guys see the drunken 60 year old perv messing with her about 30 minutes ago when she was trying to go live?

Yeah.  My experience is most of the homes are older and won't handle this kind of wind and water.  I could be wrong though.  I have cousins in Key West.  They said they don't expect to have much when they get home.  I have a few grand worth of fishing and scuba gear I keep at their place that I don't think I'll see again.  Even if you are covered, insurance finds ways to screw you over, and it still turns a life upside down temporarily.  I just hope people GTFO of there before it's too late.

Cuba taking a big bite out of her right now.... will be intersting if she can gain strength again over the warm gulf or if this eliminates the chance of a major landfall.

The longer she and Cuba dance, the worse the trajectory looks for Tampa, but the lesser the impact should be... it seems

Guys on weather channel sound bummed that it isn't going to be a Cat5. Looks like it will be losing some power but they are still trying to build drama.

Fun fact. Cuba wont let us fly air force flights over their air space so we dont know as much about this storm right now as you would want

The images coming out of there from CNN are horribad.they got an eyeball scrape all night long.

This doesn't make sense with Georgia asking people to leave coast when models show it going thru middle or west of the state.

One thing I need to add to future Hurricane prep kit: extra Icy Hot. Spent the day boarding windows yesterday. Thinking about starting to drink now to help numb the soreness in my shoulders.

(For those who don't know, we didn't know about eyewall replacement until we had a program in place where we seeded clouds to try to choke out eyewalls and stop hurricanes and realized we were doing something that happens naturally.)
Too bad it didn't work. Would have been nice to have hurricanes nipped in the butt.

Seriously though, be safe everyone. Sounds like my brother across from St Pete is high up enough surge isn't an issue. He said the neighborhood pitched in and all helped each other get their shutters up. Hopefully they hold up.

My parents have a place in the Keys, but are up in the Midwest currently.  They said most of their friends (retirees mostly) are not there this time of year, and the rest have cleared out. There's a few of the top end houses that serve as shelters that are all cement construction, even the roofs are cement slabs and they are elevated a bit. Hopefully enough the surge doesn't make it in if anyone did stay in them.

Ok, weird observation, but I noticed this on Harvey too, but Jim Cantore's left shirt sleeve always seem snug and higher up where his right one is looser and hangs down closer to his elbow. Seems to be that way with any arm positioning. Just struck me as odd.

Sue me. I'm bored.
