This is why I keep over 100 bottles of bourbon in the home bar here in Memphis. In case of Sub Category 5 winds.

To be fair I heard this secondhand from a buddy in Tampa who read it. Take it with a grain of salt.. but I also would not be blindly trusting Waze right now... and I'm a Waze junkie.

My parents took 15 hours from Bradenton to NOrth of Atlanta yesterday early AM before the hordes started moving, FWIW. Said it was a LOT of 5mph...stop.... 5mph....stop....10mph....stop....5mph....stop.

FWIW, my sister is on 75 and it is a parking lot.  She is seriously considering turning around and heading to Orlando to ride it out at a Disney hotel.

That's precisely what I am expecting, but both Waze and Google Maps are giving me a transit time that's probably only 30-45 minutes longer than the drive takes on any garden variety day.  I'm not buying it.

Go inland and take 301 thru every redneck town in North Florida. Watch your speed in Waldo and Lawtey. Buy some boiled peanuts in Waycross, GA and take it from there.

ETA local news say 95N is a cluster

See, WTF?  If I can't rely on the traffic apps/sites, I have no hope of knowing which route to take or if it's even worth making the trek and opposed to bunkering down in Orlando.

This is an idea, it's doable?  I can't say I have any familiarity with said route(s)...

If I got a speeding ticket in Waldo, FL, that would replace the one I got in Nephi, UT as the ticket I've received in the place with the dumbest name.

I just mapped this on Google using your (surprisingly not made-up) town names as waypoints and got a 9 hour transit time.

We take 301 all the time going from Jax to Gainesville or Tampa. Speed is constantly changing and there are lights in every hick town. Waldo and Lawtey are notorious sped traps.

Looks like you could go 1 to 100 to 20 thru Palatka and hang a right onto 301 in Hawthorne. Slow but you should be moving.

I have a feeling that Google has algorithms and such that are treating this traffic as normal 5 o'clock traffic, and thinking that the traffic will die down as the evening wears on. It is a flaw when it comes to events like this. The algorithms aren't built for the amount of traffic that is heading out on these roads.

If you get to Waycross and you need food/gas/whatever take it.  Small town but there is nothing else around there for at least 90 minutes on a good day.

ETA - Keep your windows up and doors locked in Palatka.

Yeah, Google maps is showing dark red in all of the named spots but have no idea how bad.

I'd suggest grabbing Two 40's of St Ides and a 32oz Gatorade (wide neck, for urine receptacle) 

 

 
Look at FL511.com

You can see every camera and every highway sign in the state of Florida. That's real time. While I see traffic on some cameras along 75, my west coast route doesn't look bad at all. You can also see incidents, congestion, etc along all routes.

Maybe your sister is stuck behind an accident?

Hop over to US 98 to Perry , FL - take it to US 19 up through Thomasville,Georgia - to Albany GA - up through Americus, GA to the suburbs south of ATL - then you are screwed no matter what. It's not a bad highway. Stretches are 4 lane 

Plus if you go into SC - you'll run into all the people leaving the coast of Carolina to ATL.

My Cousin is a Meteorologist and is seeing forecasts for 30ft waves as far north as West Palm Beach in these models...... :unsure:  

I have to think Miami is looking at 3 story tall walls of water...

You know in this case it might be quicker to take 441 north.75 and 95 are probably going to be parking lots soon if not already.I live in Lake County right in middle of state probably as safe as you can get in this situation.I have room if anyone on East coast gets stuck evacuating.We have one whole side of the house we dont use.

Not that this is your route or time leaving, but....

Just got off the phone with a friend from Miami.  Early this morning he left Miami for Orlando (his mother's house).  Took 5 hours instead of the normal 3 and change.  Using 95.

I would definitely look at your route before leaving to see what the roads currently look like (orange, red, etc.)  It may actually require just using Google Maps as a traffic tool, and just picking the best route along the way. Everyone else will be following their phone's directions, so you could shave off a couple hours or so. Actually, even if the amount of time is the same, I always prefer moving to not moving. And you can stop any time you like.

From the forecast discussion:

Irma is being steered by the flow around the south side of the subtropical ridge, but in 2 or 3 days the hurricane is expected to be located on the southwestern edge of the aforementioned ridge, and a turn to the northwest and north- northwest should then begin. The forecast track for the first 2 days was adjusted a little bit to the south given that the ridge to the north continues to be strong, and the ECMWF and HFIP corrected consensus (HCCA) models have shifted southward a little bit. These two models have been performing very well during Irma. This adjustment also results in a westward shift of the track near Florida and northward.

I would say if you have any inclination to leave, you need to do it within the next few hours.

I'm honestly getting nervous that there are going to end up being a lot of people stuck on the roads trying to ride this thing out in their vehicles.

Yeah, you don't want this to turn into Hurricane Rita in Houston, where people were running out of gas, stuck, and dying on the highway.

You leave today or you stay.  That's pretty much the decision in my mind.

Just from what I was told yesterday, it may be too late to leave now if you are south of Orlando and Tampa.  Better take backroads too, because getting gas is very hard.

Waldo disbanded their police force after the judge took care of them a couple years ago

Pretty sure all that traffic was 2 days before Rita was supposed to hit. I know I waited it out for more precise landfall.

I'm guessing there is more traffic 2-3 days before landfall, than the day before landfall. Look at Key West right now, there is ZERO traffic getting out of there. You could have waited a day a few days and missed the traffic.

Having said that, I don't advise anyone to wait any longer to leave.

With this storm, if you leave a day before it's supposed to hit (eyewall) you're going to be driving in a Cat3/4 hurricane.  There will be Tropical Storm force winds in Miami Saturday morning.  It's Thursday evening right now.

I disagree, Even South Florida you should be fine leaving early tomorrow morning. I wouldn't take the interstate though and I'd have a destination in mind.

I don't like to get in my car and start a journey like that with less than 24 hours until the winds hit.  That's just me.

Just telling you my experience from Rita. EVERYONE had the same thought. It was 20 hr trip to Austin (instead of 2 hours) for some. Waiting it out 1 more day was the shark move.

Again, I don't recommend this. But be prepared to wait in traffic. To have cars run out of gas (blocking traffic), cars overheating. I saw it all first person when I drove up to I-10 from my house.

Hopefully Florida is not a mass exodus at the same time like Rita was. Be prepared. Sounds like everyone is leaving today.
