***Official 2018 Baltimore Orioles Thread*** Pitching Can’t Get Any Worse (1 Viewer)

Fyi, it's a 3:10 start time. I'm on my way to setup the conference room tv so I can find excuses to swing by to peak in on the game.

I love weekday afternoon baseball.

Sonuva beech, the game is only on MASN2, no wjz. That sucks. Now I gotta figure out how to break it to my boss that my son is sick and I have to leave early to pick him up from school. Poor kid, he was feeling fine this morning...

Tillman was nails. The ball was jumping all over the place (maybe he was USING nails  ).

I don't follow other teams much anymore, so this Snider is pretty much unknown to me. What's his background/rep?

So, Davis back today. Hopefully get Hardy & Weiters back soon. If those three are anywhere close to their normal selves, the offense should be decent.

Snider was a high draft pick (rd 1) in 2006 by TOR. Played with them for a few years and then went to Pit. We traded two minor leaguers for him this offseason. He's nothing great, but serviceable. He batted .264 with 13 hrs last year.

I'm excited to see Davis back. The lineup looks a lot better with him in it to me.

I'm firmly in the camp that doesn't care what happens with Wieters this season. I don't think there's a chance we keep him and he will not be worth whatever he gets. Joseph is a good catcher and he caught a lower era last year than Wieters. If Matt is healthy and can help the team win, great. If not, ok.

Yeah, I'm ready to bid Wieters farewell, especially if it means they keep Davis.

Tillman has now allowed 3 or fewer runs in 21 of his last 22 starts, dating back to June. He is on the verge of being a legit top of the rotation guy.

Flaherty hit a HR on an 0-2 pitch for the first time in his career. The Tampa pitcher who served that up should be fined heavily by his clubhouse court.

I didn't realize Snider was only 27. Could be a nice sleeper for us this season.

And what a heads up play by Pearce to slide instead of just giving up and taking the out.

The Pearce play is something that would have happened to us years ago. It's nice to be on the other side of it.

Flaherty can't catch a break with me. It's great he hit a hr, but it was close to garbage time and it took a save away from Britton and my fantasy team.

I read they were close to an extension with Tillman, but that was close to a week ago. I hope it gets done as he has been very legit for us.

That is a real bonehead play by the Tampa catcher. I am coaching a girls softball team. I told them once you have the ball, there is no need to stay by the plate. Take two steps forward and tag the runner out before he slides. Also, if you stay at the plate, glove on the ground because that is where the plate/base is.

Pearce also had a heads up play in the field on the overthrow by Flaherty. The runner made the slightest turn, Pearce saw it, and started a run down.

So the win felt like a loss until Britton struck out the side in the 9th. Chen not going 5 with a 6 run lead isn't good. Gaussman touching 101 was awesome, but a little wild and a long home run.

If Fridays game is rained out, do they do a double header on Saturday or reschedule? I have tickets for Saturday but would rather go when it's not a drunk contest since I'll have my kids. If they reschedule, Saturday becomes opening night with hours and hours for people to pre-game.

Agree on Chen. After having a 6-0 lead, he should have been able to coast an easy 5 innings. Pretty disappointing to see him not even finish 5 yesterday.

Friday ain't gonna be no rainout. This is the team that had Opening Day in the snow once. They will wait and wait and wait to get this game in. But if I'm wrong, there's no way they would schedule a double-header for the home opener - Saturday night's game would be Opening Day, but I don't think it would be that big a drunk fest. Opening Day is a drunk fest because it's a holiday. Going to be really nice weather on Saturday, too. Enjoy!

BTW, how nice is it that Opening Day is no longer the only day of the season that matters?

Chen was definitely disappointing last night, but I'm not too worried about it. Gausman was ridiculous, and he'll learn from getting taken deep on that 3-1 heater right down the middle. As always, Palmer had genius commentary throughout the game, most notably pointing out that the count was the reason Gausman got beat there despite throwing 98.

Also loved his comments about the Ray who took the glancing pitch off the knee without even moving an inch to evade it, saying that he would have drilled that guy the next time he ever faced him: "You want to get hit by a pitch? I'll hit you with a pitch." Palmer was not a notorious headhunter, but he was also nobody's fool on the mound.

What a game.

Ubaldo was just under 100 pitches at the end of the 6th. He got a nice ovation from the fans who understood that he wouldn't be coming out for the 7th, but I was hoping Buck would put him back out there for one AB in the 7th (with a 7-0 lead) so he could take him out and the whole crowd could go crazy for him. What an important piece he can be for this rotation and that would have been an awesome moment.

So far, so good. This team didn't get going until June or so last year. Lot of missing pieces still to come, most notably Hardy - not totally convinced I want to see Wieters over Joseph right now and I'm not even kidding.

I think Hunter will work himself out. Remember how terrible he was early last year before they made Britton the closer? Britton looks unhittable. I'm kind of worried about O'Day, he really struggled late last year and still doesn't look good.

Buck is go great at looking at the entire season, working guys into the lineup, not over-reacting at some early rough patches - he's able to think about September, which I find myself unable to do when I watch Hunter blow an April game vs. the Yankees.

Would like to see Chen come around and I'm really hoping to see Gausman in the rotation pretty soon. As Buck says, these things have a way of working themselves out and it probably won't be long until someone is injured or slumping to the point of getting bumped. They are going to have a real roster squeeze with Hardy and Paredes coming back - can't remember the last time the Orioles had too many good position players.

I think Flaherty is finally going to earn his long-deserved ticket to Norfolk. No way you keep him over Cabrera, with the way they've both been playing.

Sure wish Davis could get going, but I'm not convinced it's ever going to happen. And I'm actually starting to get kind of intrigued to see what the Orioles will do with all the money coming off the books following this season:

Davis 12M

Norris 8.8

Wieters 8.3

De Aza 5.0

Hunter 4.7

Chen 3.8

Matusz 3.2

O'Day 2.9

That's 49 M and none of those guys are irreplaceable.

Meanwhile, I wonder how Atlanta's feeling about the $44M they've got invested in Markakis and his .653 OPS (his only extra-base hit in 30 at bats so far is a double, though his .353 OBP isn't bad)

Was having a discussion with a buddy the other night about Joseph and Wieters. I agree that I'm fine with Joseph right now. I don't think the team has really missed a beat with Wieters out of the lineup. Joseph may not be as good offensively, but he seems just as good defensively. I mean if Wieters' arm isn't the same, what value does he really bring? You're not going to put him at catcher if he can't throw.

Can Schoop stay anywhere near this production level he's had so far?

Markakis' OPS is the same as Flaherty's.

I haven't watched as many games as I'd have liked to, but I see Adam Jones has only struck out twice so far this season. Has he changed something or have pitchers forgotten how to throw the ball in the dirt?

Hunter is quickly working himself onto my #### list.

Nice bounce-back win after the heartbreaker the other night. Also nice return to form for Tilman after the last start.

So, I was looking at The_Man's list of upcoming FAs. Who would you guys like to see return (at a reasonable cost, of course)? I would love to see Chen back, but he's gonna get a hefty raise from someone.

Lots of Orioles will deserve big raises when their contracts are up. I think the only big contracts the Orioles have given out since Buck arrived are Jones, Jimenez, and JJ Hardy. They definitely believe in developing their talent and finding the next breakout player, even if it is just for a single season.

I think Chen, Tillman, and Gonzales will forever be undervalued by baseball. That means they will never get as big a contract as they may think, which means the Orioles may be able to re-sign them. The Orioles will not overpay for anybody.

And lots of Orioles not deserving of big contracts will get them (not by the Orioles). Wieters, Davis.. and is Norris much different than porcello?

Do they play the game this morning in the rain?

On the bright side, the Orioles can give Wieters a qualifying offer and they can get a 1st round draft pick when is signs elsewhere. If Davis has a good year, they can do the same with him.

What happened with Bautista last night? I saw the clip on the news, starting with the pitch behind him. Did anything happen before that?
He got hit during the series in Baltimore, but hit a hr after that. He did do an exaggerated trot then too. If I were him, I probably would have thought it was intentional. Gotta hand it to him, he crushed that ball. Maybe we should stop throwing at him.

Later in the game he tried to embarrass Delmon young by throwing him out at first on a base hit to RF. He hurt his shoulder and may go onto the DL. I don't care for the Blue Jays very much and I hate watching games at their terrible stadium.

Thanks for taking the time to give me the history. I must have missed the series of events in Baltimore.

So Buck's already given up on Pearce?
My fantasy team might too.
Buck has been very good at playing the hot hand and finding the next break out player, even if it only lasts for a few weeks. Right now, Paredes is hot. And he has been hot all spring training too. It would be hard to not play him. Delmon Young looks solid, much like last year. It will be hard to not play these guys until they cool off.

Yeah, I also saw speculation for a 1pm start tomorrow and then a doubleheader on a future off day for both squads. Then of course the Rays series could be in question for Fri and Sat nights.

So tomorrow's game is going to be played at 2pm, but will be closed to the public.

Weekend series against TB will be played in TB.

I biked over there just to check out the scene, hung out with a small contingent of fans on the sidewalk behind the CF fence, got to see Davis hit that bomb. There was a good little crowd up in the balconies at the Hilton too. Not sure if the players can hear any of these people though.. I can't on the TV.

All in all it's pretty quiet downtown. I had to come back home and work.

ETA: Guess they could hear them.. Caleb Joseph gave a shout out

So does the team have to eat the gate receipts and all revenue from everything else? Seems like that would be pretty unfair to the team.

That's what it sounds like right now. It'll be 4 games of lost revenue for the Orioles since they moved this weekend's series to Tampa.

Can't they just flip a series with the Rays? Make this one "home" for TB and move a later series in the season with them to Baltimore. It seems silly to have the Orioles be the home team (& lose game receipts) in Tampa. I guess it would suck for the 3 or 4 fans who planned a later-season trip around seeing the Orioles down there, but it sucks worse for both the Os & the fans in Baltimore. Maybe I'm missing something, though.

That's been asked alot of times now. Not sure. Maybe it was logistical? Maybe they didn't want to make TB fans angry by having them have to redo plans for tickets they already bought? No idea.

Do these actually exist?
