***Official 2018 Baltimore Orioles Thread*** Pitching Can’t Get Any Worse (2 Viewers)

Just when I think they're going to fall apart, they rally and put a nice stretch together. 1/2 game up on the Angels in the WC race right now.

I really like Schoop. But boy did the lapses in his usually outstanding defense cost them 3 runs last night.

Oh well. On to the next one.

Wasn't loving it after he hit into that bases loaded Double Play, but he turned a great DP of his own and hit the game-changing 2-run HR. Went to the game on a whim last night - mostly to get the Manny-Schoop Handshake T-shirt for my daughter, who's out of town - and had one of the great nights of the year. Big crowd, beautiful hot summer night, a few cold ones, and a walk-off HR.

Heard some amazing stats yesterday about the bullpen, all of which pointed to Buck's genius. They're near the very top of the AL for innings pitched, but near the bottom for number of relief apperances, and almost near the bottom for number of games that guys have pitched back-to-back. That means he's using fewer relievers and having them pitch longer, but also giving them adequate rest. I believe pretty much every guy out there knows when he is or isn't going to be used, and it's given them a tremendous level of comfort that helps them prepare.

The bullpen was just great last night. Yes, they got Givens and he hasn't done too well when called upon to pitch in back-to-back games himself (like last night) but he has a live arm and is a strikeout pitcher, which I love in a reliever. With Brach-O'Day-Britton, then have innings 7-8-9 pretty well locked up - maybe not quite as well as last year with O-Day-Miller-Britton, but still pretty good. Would love to see them take 3 of 4 from the Twins and wrap up an 8-2 homestand.

Here's a fun little stat.

Orioles record in August: 10-7. Record by starting catcher:

Joseph 9-1

Clevenger 1-0

Wieters 0-6

Someone posted advanced stats here last year about Joseph's pitch-framing ability vs. that of Wieters. It was shocking how much better Joseph's numbers were. I don't know how accurate those kinds of stats are, but for the first time it made me begin to question the narrative of Wieters as some kind of defensive master.

Sure, I'd like to keep Wieters, but not at $18 million per year or whatever he's going to get. I just hope they can keep Davis and O'Day, and let Wieters and Chen go.

Good win last night - got my split from my two teams. But this team is simply not made to go that far it feels. Just doesn't seem to have the feeling.

Of course, you find a way to get into the tourney and anything can happen.

BTW, where does the lawsuit stand re the Nats

I think they had final arguments a while ago and they are waiting for the ruling.

Important week for the O's. Games against the Royals and Rangers. Doesn't seem like the season is on the line this week, but it will go a long way in determining if they can make a run or not.

Oh, this season is over. I told my friend that if the friggin Twins turned out to be too athletic for the Orioles to handle, it's going to be ugly what the Royals do to us.

Interesting blurb on mlbtraderumors.com

This August has apparently been heavy on waiver claims, with one general manager telling Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com that he’s never seen this many claims made. “The Orioles seemingly claim everyone,” said the unnamed GM. Of course, Baltimore has yet to pull off any deals this month (or end up being awarded any claimed contracts).

Blocking seems like the logical response to the tightness of the AL WC race

The Orioles are still rotating through left fielders. They could use another middle infielder with Hardy on the DL and not hitting all year. And they could always use a bat or a starting pitcher. I think the Orioles could legitimately claim most players and really want them if the team just let them go.

The Orioles are now 63-63, with 36 games left to play. Amazingly, they are only 2 games out of the 2nd wild card spot (Minnesota). Texas and Anaheim are also ahead of the Orioles.

If the Orioles could win 24 of the next 36 games, they would have 27 wins and would probably get a wild card and go into the playoffs with some momentum. Catching both the Blue Jays and Yankees looks quite unlikely at this point.

The Orioles just need to start winning some games.

Man, if they just could've gone 6-7 instead of 1-12 during that awful stretch they'd be right in the thick of it.
I think this all the time. Even 5-8 and they're now tied for the Wild Card. At any rate, I'm happy to see them make a run at it, even if it's a futile end to a disappointing season. Great drama at Nats Park last night.

If they would sign Davis and extend Manny, I would consider this off-season a success even if they did nothing else. Unfortunately, I doubt either one of those things happens. It is going to be very hard for me to take if/when Davis leaves.

Gotta thank my O's for the last two nails in the Nats coffin.

More important, the team is still fighting.

I thought in this exciting beltway series, the Nats and Orioles would eliminate each other from the playoffs.

Surprisingly, the Orioles swept the Nats. Baseball Prospectus has the Orioles chances of making the playoffs at 1.2%. Meanwhile, the Nats are now at 0.1%.

We are 12 times better than the Nationals.

Bits on pieces on Papalbon's actions from Tom Boswell's article this morning in the Washington Post:

“Retaliation?” Orioles Manager Buck Showalter said, mock-serious, before the game. “No, that’s not allowed. You’re not supposed to do that. The best retaliation would be to win another game, right?” So they did. Now the Nats are, statistically, closer to clinically playoff dead — both under 1 percent — as the O’s.
One thing is clear. Papelbon hitting Machado didn’t go down too well with some of his own mates. Whatever the right amount of “fight” may be, throwing at anybody’s head — or giving the appearance of it — isn’t the Nats way.

As soon as Machado was hit, Toronto ace left-hander David Price tweeted: “Haha. Wow. Baltimore runs onto field. . . . Nationals stay at their positions . . . looked funny. I’m pretty sure I know what that means.”

His inference: The Nats either didn’t support their teammates or, more likely, specifically didn’t support Papelbon.

On Thursday, even General Manager Mike Rizzo volunteered the Machado side of the issue, saying he thought the duel between Scherzer and Machado might have been “the best at-bat of the year” at Nationals Park.

He mentioned how Scherzer stalks the mound and how Machado matched his intensity. In other words, does great competition, which somebody must lose, mean that another pitcher throws near the winner’s head?

Man was yesterday a totally crappy day in Baltimore sports. I don't mind losing but I do hate it when sports are so bad that they actually make me feel a little worse about my life, rather than provide a fun escape.

On the bright side, I do have Steve Smith in fantasy football.

My daughter's travel softball team played in Glen Burnie over the weekend. Her team won the tournament. So it wasn't all bad.

We stayed at a Hampton Inn Saturday night. Saw lots of Bengal fans Sunday morning at breakfast.

Throw in the Terps debacle on Saturday and the Os getting swept............ The whole weekend sucked sports-wise.

I have Smith in my FFL, too. He & the Cards D beat my opponent by themselves.

Dissappointing season, but hardly a washout, and at least we had most of the season with relevance.

Manny is going on sending a message, IMO. His insistence on playing all 162, and just ramping it up for this final stretch of games.

Heck, 35? From a 3B who can play SS?

While it will suck to see Crush somewhere else, maybe we should be thinking of how to get the guys who get on base and score, so our best player, who went 35 yard this year, can do it from the 3 spot, where he belongs. Get a lower cost but still solid #4 for 1B and a really good top of the order guy, then go from there. Prob do both, and maybe part of a third player, for what Crush is going to cost some team, maybe more when you consider the likely length and obligation of the deal.

Either way, let's get some guys and build around Manny, and around means positioning him, and the team, for the most success - Manny in the 3 spot, with guys who can set the table ahead, and a good enough guy (who'll be that much better in Camden) to hit HRs and get on base enough to be a 4 and protect Manny.

Not an impossible job with the base they have.

Great posting. Except you forgot to say "From a Platinum Glove 3B who can play SS in his age 22 season."

I started watching baseball when I was 8 years old, the same season Eddie Murray was Rookie of the Year. I venerate Eddie Murray. I still think he is the baddest and coolest dude I ever saw, the guy who taught Cal Ripken want it meant to be a pro and play 162 games a year. Manny is doing things Eddie never touched (though Eddie still gets the edge in sideburns, switch-hitting, and cool batting stance).

They need to extend Manny NOW. And I still can't swallow the bitter pill it's going to be if/when Davis leaves. They're really going to let the MLB HR champ walk in two straight years? Disaster. If they somehow sign him, we're in a magic era of Orioles baseball when Manny-Jones-Davis played together for the better part of a decade. Would love to see that happen

Murray was the best junk ball hitter I've ever seen. He would have the BP pitchers throw him garbage where most guys wanted grooved fastballs in practice. A reporter (probably one of those who eventually ran him out of town) asked him why he did that and Eddie said (paraphrasing from memory) "Because I already know I can hit pitches over the plate".

He was also much more an "old soul" even at 21. Hopefully Manny grows into that.

As much as I loved Eddie, he was a horrible baserunner and was about as fleet afoot as Peyton Manning. I used to laugh when Chuck Thompson - a great announcer, but one who wouldn't call a flaw on an Oriole if Charlie Manson were wearing orange & black - would say "what a smart play by Eddie not trying for 2nd!" when Murray was barely at first before the throw came in.

Pretty big ruling in the Orioles favor yesterday. This should help with payroll concerns, but then again...

@JamesWagnerWP: NY Supreme Court Judge Lawrence Marks issued MASN case ruling today. Ruled in favor of MASN/O's & ordered MLB panel's award to Nats vacated.

The decision will mean more money for Angelos. How much of it ends up on the field remains to be seen.
It should help some. It's not like Angelos is in the poor house. But MASN needs to be profitable on its own, which the Nationals don't really care about.

I am glad the Orioles won here just out of fairness.

By the way, it is not over yet. The Nationals could appeal the ruling. Or if they go with it, it needs to be back to arbitration. The Orioles felt that if they could get it back to arbitration and get a fair hearing, it will be decided in their favor.

Matt Wieters - C - Orioles
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Matt Wieters will accept the Orioles' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer.
Wieters has decided to roll the dice, hoping he can rehab his value after two injury-shortened seasons and then cash in next winter. The catcher was limited to just 75 games in 2015 in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, batting .267/.319/.422 batting line with eight home runs.

Caleb Joseph should be pretty pissed. Unless Davis doesn't come back and Wieters plays first, which would "crush" his market value.

It's definitely 16mm that Dan wasn't expecting to pay.

Os sign Davis. It's funny how having a couple of weeks to think about the contract offer and other players available made me doubt wanting him back. Oh well. I hope it doesn't hurt us signing Machado long term.

An additional $31 million and guaranteed income until 2037 doesn't hurt either.I dunno, seems like the O's may have overpaid here.

Late to the party. Glad Davis is back, don't like the price we paid to bring him back.
There was an interesting article on camdenchat.com. If you ignore the payments beyond 7 years, the deal is $119M for 7 years. Although I cannot buy into just ignoring the other payments, $3.5M in 2025 may not have much impact on payroll then.
