Newsome played his way on to the team. It'd be a shame if they cut him.Well, the Chargers are down to 53. Comments:
1. I do not understand Anthony Lynn's fascination with Cardale Jones. Looks like the team is going to keep 3 QBs, which wastes a roster spot.
2. The team currently has only 2 TEs -- Green and Culkin. It seems obvious that they will add a TE, presumably Gates.
3. I am mildly surprised that they kept 4 RBs (not including FB Watt) and 6 WRs, though one of those players will presumably be cut for Gates.
4. I am really hoping they sign Hankins.
You look at that linebacker group and its pretty unimpressive.
I'm glad the Aguayo experiment is over. Don't know how excited I am about Sturgis, but he should do better than Koo did at least.

I doubt it. I'm sure he will have some startable games, but I expect they will be unpredictable.

Agree Newsome played his way on the team. Do not agree with keeping 7th round pick Jackson, who hardly played. Of course, it remains to be seen who was cut for Gates. Since they only kept 2 TEs in the original cutdown, I do not expect it was a TE. I would like it to be Cardale Jones first, but, if not, candidates certainly include Jackson as well as one of the last WRs (Davis or Jones).Newsome played his way on to the team. The LBs aren't bad. Rookies Nwosu and White both played well in preseason and Perryman should be fine in the middle. Even Pullard had a strong preseason. And Dzubnar isn't on the roster to play LB, he is there to play special teams.

I think if you stashed Virgil Green, better to have Gates. I don't think we are saying TE1, but I think he is a good flyer for double digit draft round and maybe a solid TE2.

But he’s not. They didn’t IR him - news broke last night that they PUP’d him with hopes of a November return, 7 months from surgery (which is aggressive, but not unrealistic)
if the chargers are in contention, consider a pick up of Henry mid-October.

As a “TD or bust bye week filler”, sure.
Wouldnt count on him for a lot of production otherwise.

I don't play FF anymore so I don't really care about picking guys up. As a Charger fan, I've learned to expect the worst case scenario - I'm not planning on Henry contributing this year. And here's another thing - I don't think they're going to cut Gates this year. He may get hurt and go out for the season himself, but I really doubt they just drop him.

But this is a FF forum. And you’re saying something that’s patently false.
99% of this board does play FF, so I’m merely pointing out the correction. They did not IR Henry, and they have said they hope for a November return.
All due respect, but no one cares that you don’t play FF. This thread is about fantasy football and the Chargers, and the discussion was about Gates, and by default that includes making sure folks understand the possibility that Henry may come back.
Your pessimism is noted, however irrelevant.

First of all, I never said they put him on IR. But its still a non-zero probability Henry is out for the year. That was the initial forecast, and them not putting him on season ending IR doesn't change that, regardless of "hoping" for a November return. They "hope" for a November return so that they might begin working him back into things for their playoff run - which isn't going to help FF owners a whole lot.Hot Sauce Guy said:
As to what "this thread is about" - for the most part the active posters in here have been Charger fans talking about the team from a non-fantasy perspective. I get that people want their FF scoops, and the regulars might come up with info that's helpful in that regard.
By all means, pick up Henry later in the season. I'm just saying I wouldn't plan on it amounting to much - you might be better off using that roster spot differently. Have a nice season.

I agree on the ceiling. O/U I may go as high as 12. Main reason is the bye week is right in the middle of the season (perfect timing). It'll be interesting to see how they use him.
Pulling from an ESPN article (http://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles-chargers/post/_/id/24211/what-the-chargers-offense-will-look-like-without-hunter-henry), the Chargers were #8 in running two TE sets last year, and #20 in three WR sets. With Williams stepping up, the prediction was that the TE sets would go down as WR goes up. To me, this sounds like they still have plans for the two TE sets and didn't feel good with Culkin as the other man and no bench behind as it would limit the offensive playbook. So I think the signing makes sense and Culkin sits and watches for the year as an insurance policy.
As for his ceiling, let's not forget the last two games of the season where Henry was out. Gates posted 10 receptions for 127 yards and a TD. I don't think Green has the connection with Rivers that Gates or even Henry does. So I do think his ceiling could be solid TE2 level.
I'll be watching this week to see how they use him. Should be interesting

3 UDFAs on the roster as of now. I wonder how long that lasts. They need a cut for Gates, Liuget comes back in 4 games, and who knows if they pick up a cast off or two. Jeez I hope they get rid of one of those backup QBs first.
I hope Justin Jones can give them something - the interior D line is pretty much unchanged from last year and Liuget is out.

Those are unrealistically low projections. Last season, he had 30/316/3 on 52 targets. More importantly, Henry missed the last 2 games. During those 2 games, Gates had 10/127/1 in those 2 games. In 2016, he had 53/548/7 in 14 games.JohnnyU said:

Agree, I'd like to see Jones released first. But I think Lynn has a man crush on him and he will stick.
Comments on those 3 UDFAs:
- Jones does absolutely zero beyond returning kicks and punts. So he requires a gameday roster spot to have an impact while contributing nothing on offense, defense, kick/punt coverage, or place kicks. I don't think he is worth the roster spot and will be surprised if he lasts.
- Newsome played well in preseason, but I don't see both he and Jackson sticking on the roster. I wouldn't expect both to make it to next week, much less past Liuget's activation.
- Similar deal for Facyson. He seems like the most likely cut for any defensive player signed. Hopefully, that will be Hankins.

I hope so too, but he didn't show much in camp/preseason. Combine that, plus Liuget's suspension, plus Philon being a bit banged up, and I am pretty surprised DT Steven Richardson didn't make the cut. He played well in preseason. I hope he makes it through to the practice squad.

Jones is gone.
The Chargers added LB Emmanuel Ellerbe (ATL) and DT T.Y. McGill (IND).
So Jones' release covers Gates, meaning 2 more players will be/have been released.

Chris Landrum has to go from nice preseason story to actual contributor immediately. This team can't even start the season healthy.

I know it's a dumb question but how large off an impact will the loss of Bosa have on the defense?

Not sure what kind of answer you are looking for beyond the obvious. Bosa is arguably their best defensive player. He is a huge loss for however many games he misses.
It will allow the offense to give extra attention to DE Ingram and potentially neutralize what is normally a potent pass rush, especially during the first 4 games while DT Liuget is suspended. This, in turn, could impact the secondary performance.
Last season, the Chargers’ pass defense was right there with Jacksonville at the top of the league. Bosa’s loss will probably drop them down by a fair amount while he is out.

Or the Chargers could somehow, someway, someday have a coaching staff who can eliminate those problems and just generally get the team to a state where they look like they're actually prepared to play a game. Was there some sort of contest we weren't aware of to see who could make the most egregious drop of a pass?

I'm an Angelino (well county anyway) born and raised. Been a Charger fan since I was 9 or 10 though - one eyeful of Air Coryell and the unis with the lightning bolts stole me away from the Rams. Couldn't quite get rid of the Jack Youngblood poster on the wall, but it was soon joined by Fouts and Jefferson posters after I watched the Chargers in some random game of the week back in '78.

Yep.....that game vs kc was terrible more red than blue jerseys in the stands.....rams are the team to beat imo.....the chargers = the clippers

The Chargers have their two toughest opponents under their belt (until they play the Chiefs on the road in week 15). Special teams cost them in a big way against KC, and they were within one score of the Rams in the second half. I still think they have a decent shot at the playoffs. I'd bet against a long playoff run, but anything can happen once a team gets into the postseason.
