I don't think I've ever watched the Croatian/Atletico RB (I refuse to try and spell his name) and said  "that was a great play". 

He's not very good

Nigeria is not very good are they?  I thought this was not one of the better teams going into the WC?  :shrug:

I do think Croatia is a real dark horse candidate with Modric and Rakitic running the MF.

Not really.  Lots of young talent, would have been nice to see them able to put it together a bit.

 
The match report will show an OG and a PK but both resulted from set pieces.  Nigeria's shakiness on them continues to be a problem. 

They'll need better from Obi and Iwobi.  Iwobi is wasted on the wing and never had service when he tried to come inside.  Rohr might be better off moving him to the #10 and dropping Obi  into a deeper pivot role.  Musa didn't show much after he came on but if Nigeria is going to play it up the wing, he's more of a traditional winger than Iwobi is.

Croatia did a professional job of breaking up any counters by the Super Eagles.  I'm afraid Iceland will pose a similar puzzle to unlock.

 
Marking this for hot World Cup action. When does our USA play? How soon do I get to start talking about England being overrated? Has Suarez tried to injure anyone yet?

If I want so drunk from watching soccer since 6am (and maybe from brewing and Australian Pale Ale during those last two games) I'd be pretty salty about there being no more good soccer today. 

I know I'm going to hate myself while watching USL tonight. :oldunsure:

Day two and I'm already to the point of thinking up rules to lessen diving.

How about, "If a fouled player is deemed to have not tried to keep his feet, the ball shall be moved 10 meters away from goal before being put into play.  The same for any fouled player who covers his face when his face was not contacted."

It’s been discussed in the soccer thread for years. It’s already a yellow card offense for a player to “attempt to deceive the referee e.g. by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation).”

Soccer players often intentionally jump or dive to avoid a hard tackle in order to avoid injury, making your proposed wording difficult.

Put less thought into it, gb and enjoy the games. There's ####E we don't like in every sport.

 
Yeah, many "dives" are really just natural reactions that help a player avoid injury ("riding a tackle).  There's too much a gray area between that and "going down too easily" to try and draw a penalty to consistently enforce it.

But faking a hit to the face? Rolling over 20 times after a minor fall? That stuff sucks.

Yeah, this is the stuff that gets to me.  I enjoy soccer but it makes me grind my teeth after watching a couple of games of it.

Obviously efforts to deal with it haven't worked.  They don't call it.   Had the guy in... think it was the Russia game, took a total dive outside the box, no contact with him at all.   If they really wanted to end the diving they could at the least give a post-match yellow when it was so obviously a dive.

I don't seriously think they'd adopt my proposed rule, I'm just chatting out of frustration.  

 
Perhaps we should have two threads, one for the newbies complaining about rules/announcers etc. and another for the rest of us that understand the greatness of the event and would just like to appreciate it for what it is.

Can't do it. They both laid down on the last night of qualifying when they saw that the US was in trouble.

We would have gotten embarrassed in Russia anyway, but still.

I've always felt any athlete writhing in pain needs to be removed for a quick medical examination before returning. You know for his safety.
