Yeah he definitely would have been better off letting one go low far post.

Woz non-educated, casual observer hot take: it seems like high level soccer should take a lesson from hockey and learn that it's a +EV to just get balls on net as opposed to trying to set up the better shot.
What do you know about hockey?  You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Too many of these players still aren't good enough with both feet. So they are taking extra touches to setup their strong foot.  It's fascinating to me that that is an issue at the highest level still.

It's also really really hard to get a quality shot off, so I get it.

I'd note that it did take over 100 years for baseball stats to be better understood and the game has adapted with it (e.g. more players swinging for home runs, less bunting, more taking pitches).
two points here:

1) baseball and soccer are arguably the two most different team sports on the planet.  very little can be learned from one to the other.  The only thing in common they have as a sport is the tectonic like way they people in charge move to try and better the sport.

2) I am a huge stats guy (more than most soccer fans).  But we are still very early in soccer starting to understand how to use stats to better the play on the field.

If I had a nickel for every player I saw use the outside of his foot to cross with his strong foot, I would be happy.

I feel like Germany and Holland produce the most pure two footed players but it is really haphazard every where else even at the highest levels of the game.  Remember what Rojo's mom even said?

No doubt the sports are different (although I'd argue water polo and curling are the two most different team sports on the planet). Math is math, though. Some smart statistician out there has to have been able to find a large enough sample sizes of game results when a player is presented with mediocre/difficult scoring shot versus a pull back/pass.
