***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (2 Viewers)

Truthfully, happy that England advance.  but, really just happy that Spurs players did not #### it up...

ETA - I also thought Davinson Sanchez played well, and kept his head when most of Colombia were losing theirs.

Man I am such a sucker for fan celebrations. Trafalgar Square was lit.

And then on the other hand seeing James Rodriguez sitting alone on the bench with tears in his eyes.  :(

So much drama. So many moments.

Speaking of tomorrow....nothing until Friday?  I might have to rewatch Spain/Russia and see if something different happens.

This tournament so far has been utterly fantastic.  Every day has had amazing drama.  Even matchups I would have never thought would interest me at all.

Boring James Milner @boringmilner - 6 min

I've just had my third cup of tea since Eric Dier's penalty and it's still not calmed me down.

I believe England deserved to advance from the group stage and over the 120 minutes today I thought they were the better side so advancing to quarters seems deserved as well.

And while acknowledging that, dead god, if they tried to script an easier passage to the finals, it would be almost impossible to create one better.

A below average group, an average second round opponent missing their best player, and now probably the second weakest quarter final opponent.

If they play like they did today again, maybe we'll get lucky and they won't.

I’ve pretty much decided I’m going to the pub on Friday and getting loaded pulling for Belgium over Brazil. I just thought I’d announce that. Thank you.

Has this place blown up yet?

Nice game. Wonderful for England, sort of tragic (for lack of a better term) for Colombia. Both of the games were pretty exciting today, actually. Feel like I've been up since six in the morning.

Oh yeah...

I am just having such a hard time getting a read on England.

Last second win against un-fancied Tunisia.

Crushed the worst team in the tournament(a team so bad the US beat them by 4).

Lost against Belgium with some starters being rested.

Advanced on PK's against a less than great Colombia missing Hummas.

And yet I look at the rest of the bracket and think no one is that much better.  :loco:

Big day in MLS tomorrow and a huge Thursday of Europa league qualification on Thursday!

Full replay of PKs

All schtick aside - great reaction from Hendo, at 9:05, when Dier hits the pen.  Just pure relief.

Couple of good views of Dier's kick - Ospina comes close, but not close enough to keep it out.

Hendo didn't even have a bad pk...just a great save. Placement was great just not enough  umph or height.
It was the perfect level for a diving keeper.  Need to burn the grass or get it up.  If the keeper guesses right he’s got a good shot at saving it.

Yeah, I don't think England can counter Croatia's midfield combo.  They had a tough time today against Colombia, playing without James.
It's tough because Kane is such a great striker that he can get a goal out of almost anything.  Croatia should rule the midfield, but needs to be productive

YES!!!

Not sure if I was more nervous about someone ruining the score for me at work or during the PKs.

Colombia played so physical.  Curious to go back and read the thread and see what other thoughts but it seemed obvious to me they tried to just out physical England.

tbh, I'd put them ahead of Uruguay too. and sweden ahead of russia.
Uruguay is a tricky team and I continue to think they are underrated.  A great mix of experience and youth with two great forwards.  With a healthy Cavani, they are really hard to beat.  Godin doesn't get enough credit either.

I'm really excited to see their matchup with France, should be a fun clash of styles.  We're just at the part of the tournament where those tend to go towards the teams with a stronger defense.

In terms of the odds - I still like Croatia best.

Belgium have a good team, but probably the toughest path: Potentially - Brazil/France/Croatia

England are over-bet already, Croatia are a better team

I am assuming Uruguay is priced with Cavani out -

Brazil was my pre-tournament pick, so I still like them to win, but facing Belgium - France to get to the finals is a tough back-to-back.  Odds too short to really bet on them.
