This would be classified as a big miss.....
From 2003 to 2007 Florida safeties coach Ron English served as the defensive backs coach (03-05) and defensive coordinator (06-07) at the University of Michigan. During a recent interview with The Michigan Insider to preview Saturday’s Peach Bowl match-up between the Wolverines and Gators, English reflected upon some noteworthy recruiting misses during his time in Ann Arbor. In part one he recapped the story of how Michigan passed on NFL All Pro wide receiver Desean Jackson.
Ron English on getting Michigan in at Long Beach Poly: “Lloyd retired, but it kind of worked liked this… when you got in there, you were in there. We would've had a pipeline to Poly because the next year they had a couple of guys that went to Miami and stuff like that. Where I was, they were trying to send me people. (Former Michigan defensive back and Long Beach Poly alum) Donovan Warren… I knew the dad was the guy, and I think that what happened was, too, it was a fit. It was really a fit… his personality was a fit for Michigan. And that dad, I knew of course some people that he knew and all that stuff. I still do. I had a place in Long Beach. At the time, I was so entrenched in California recruiting because I was into it at that time. It's amazing. I was thinking about this, you turn down DeMarco Murray (from Vegas)… we turned down DeMarco Murray. DeMarco Murray would've come to Michigan.
Sam Webb: So you could’ve have DeMarco Murray. You could’ve had another “De.” You could’ve had Desean Jackson (from Long Beach Poly). Now he was really ready to come.
Ron English on DeSean Jackson: “I'm telling you DeMarco Murray was done. That would've been done. This is the deal with (DeSean Jackson). I go into Poly, and this is before we got Warren, so I'm still fighting. ‘Just give me one guy.’ At the time SC had a stranglehold. Nobody… I'm saying not one person that was elite was leaving Poly to go anywhere else but USC. So I go by there and I know there is this lady who is like the football academic advisor / team-mom / mom / everything named Miss Kim. Miss Kim was who you had to get to. The players loved her and depended on her and all that stuff. So I spent two, three years… every time I go there, I hang out with Miss Kim for an hour every time. I'm talking about all her players and where they're going and I'm just so happy for them, this and that. Now, I go by once and DeSean is not there. Go by again, DeSean is not there. So I leave a note. A good friend of mine, Ken Delgado, who is now coaching d-line in Cleveland (for the Browns)… he left Cal to coach for me at Louisville as the D-line coach and then at Eastern Michigan as the D-line coach… Kenny was at Cal. He had coached DeSean's brother at San Jose State. So now, the dad was Wild Bill. We called him Wild Bill because Bill was wild (laughter). Bless his soul because Bill has departed this earth. Bill was the man, he was wild. Kenny, myself, and Bill are going to have dinner at this place called La Trattoria which it's right on Venice Beach, it's a pasta, wine deal. So all three of us are there and I'm thinking, ‘okay, the guy is going to SC or he's going to Cal.’ So, I'm not saying nothing the whole dinner about (recruiting). I'm just kind of sitting there just chilling with Bill and Kenny, having a good time and having some wine and some pasta. Now, I'm leaving. I get to my car and I pull out and get to the corner. Bill calls. ‘Hey Ron… hey Ron, DeSean wants to come to Michigan. His mom is from Detroit… blah, blah, blah.’ That's how Bill would talk, he'd talk real fast. I said, ‘OK, perfect! Thank you God!’ (Laughter).”
“I had not talked to the kid one time. All I knew was that he was, in my mind, that year he was the best player in the state of California. The most competitive, the toughest, and just a playmaker. And then, what I loved about him was… you know why I kept missing him? He was playing pro baseball. Anyway, we get back and of course I tell the coaches. By the way, I had shown this guy for two years and would tell the coaches (about him). Everything is all good. So I call Bill, ‘I said OK, it's all good. Just have your wife call. We will set this call up for 8 o'clock.’ 6 o'clock that same night our coach calls… ‘Can’t take him Ron. We just took this other guy.’ We take this other receiver… we take this other guy. (LaTerryal Savoy). Bill calls and the mother calls and I have to tell them. He cusses me out! He's ripping me because they were all set. It was a done deal, so they are going nuts on me. He was so mad. He was mad because it was done. The mom was getting on to say, ‘hey, thank you so much. Now I can go see my (family).'”
“So at the time, (college coaches) could still go to the Army (All-American) Game. Me and the receivers coach go to the Army Game. If you remember, that's when (DeSean Jackson) went nuts. He went nuts! He went nuts! Every time he made a play, I was like, ‘that's your boy right there. That's your boy you turned down right there.’ Of course, as a freshman, he returns punts for touchdowns against Tennessee. He's DeSean Jackson.”
