***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

A couple of Portuguese players, including fan favorite Pepe, are claiming the WC is fixed for Messi because of the way the Argentine ref handled the Portugal game.

I just read a story in the athletic about the Arg/Ned game. An Arg player sent a rocket from point blank range at the Ned bench and didn't get kicked out? What? Is it because this has never happened before and they didn't know how to deal with it? I refuse to believe this has never happened with all the craziness in this sport.

here's the clip

Paredes got a yellow for it. Not sure about the "never happened before" question.
I thought he got a yellow for the tackle. Could easily have been another for kicking the ball into the bench.

I'm not sure if that should have been a straight red, and if it was given the card-happy nature of the ref, the game likely gets abandoned
Abandoned?

I think what he means is that it may have caused an already extreme volatile game to boil over to the point where the refs would lose control of the game and would walk off the field.
Is that a thing in international soccer?

I am sure it maybe happened a couple of times in qualifying over the past century but I don't think it has ever happened at the WC.

It happens a touch more in club play but that is only because there a millions of games played every weekend all over the world, and strange things can happen (and I am not saying it happens every weekend, every year or even every decade, just that is has happened)

Is it at all reasonable that the ref simply wasn't looking for the intent of the kick as it happened so fast after the foul?

I was meaning more that he'd probably start giving red cards all over the place and we'd end up with <7 players on one team, causing an abandonment

Not quite as exciting as The Battle of Santiago.

It didn't need to be a red. Even if a yellow he would have been gone. He got NO CARD for it.

Was thinking last night... US broadcasts are doing themselves and the sport a disservice by not making use of the telestrator to help the US audience gain more appreciation for the tactics and strategy of the game.

Works in football because of all the downtime during the game. When would they highlight plays? I already dislike when they miss gameplay to show some replay.

Also I believe soccer feeds are usually broadcast the same internationally. I don't think the individual commentating teams would have the ability to pause as certain spots to do it. Maybe Apple can institute this with their new MLS contract though.

Certainly with the World Cup, everyone in the UK uses the generic FIFA feed, and I would imagine that it is the same for all other countries, and they just dub on the commentary and perhaps their own aftermarket current score etc graphics. Over here we get a bunch of that sort of thing at half time and full time, but Gator's right, there isn't the downtime, or at least the easily identifiable downtime. We may get someone getting treatment but it is impossible to identify in advance, it is not like football where you can see first down - rush for one yard - incomplete and you can then start to cue some analysis knowing that with a fair bit of certainty you will have a three and out then punt then commercial then come back to show the clever blocking/motion/misdirection etc from earlier in the game

It would have to be a studio thing. Carra and Neville use an animated video tool in their show on sky that’s pretty good. There’s no place for it during live action though.

I wonder if you could do a little split screen action to show a replay with markup while the game is ongoing. The other team is passing it around the back and the commentators are doing their madden thing on a replay, perhaps from an overhead camera or behind the goal camera.

TVs are really big these days so it could work.

I agree with no split screens. However, in events like this where you have a ton of new/uniformed fans I wouldn't mind seeing the big plays/controversial calls be reviewed at half/full time on a teleprompter in the studio. I think it would help, especially to point out all the off ball movement on goals to the general, once every 4 years, crowd to get them more engaged.

No split screens or telestrators please. You’re just begging them to open it up to split screen commercials. I’m surprised they haven’t done this yet.

I think it was '90 or '94 when they would periodically shrink the screen view and put a border around the live action that had the Budweiser logo or one of the other sponsors.

You need a decent studio show for this kind of stuff and Fox does not.

I've seen that on Telemundo or Univision before too.

The ESPN World Cups had a lot of that (even if the telestrator was often being used by Roberto Martinez). And of course, the NBC/Peacock EPL coverage uses a lot of it at halftime as well.

In fairness, even if he wasn't using a telestrator, Donovan did a decent job showing Adams' defensive breakdown on the first Dutch goal at halftime of that game. I think Aly Wagner has done some of that when she's been in-studio instead of working with Rae as well. For better or worse, that's not what Alexi Lalas or Clint Dempsey are going to bring to the table. Lalas is going to say "set pieces" a million times and Clint is a vibes guy. Which I like in the Champions League and qualifying games where they're catering to established soccer fans, but isn't really ideal for a general, more casual audience.

Folks beat me to the Fox Puck references.

99% sure '94 Cup was the beginning of the use of the border ads here - I recall it being a big deal/innovation at the time. I believe it was used in other countries slightly before that.

Non-USA group stage games I'm interested in:

Group F - I'm interested to see all of these games, and particularly how Canada matches up. Have to assume Hakim Ziyech will not play for Morocco but they were dominant in qualifying and will give all of these teams fits. This is the closest we have to a Group of Death as 2 really good teams will not advance.

Pretty good job here Cletius

My long time friend and law partner asked me to go to a hearing with him today that starts at 2:00. He's doing all the arguing, just wants me there for support as I have been directly involved with the case throughout and there are some difficult issues and personalities involved. I said 'sure, there's another world cup in 4 years anyway so I can see that one.'

I canceled a meeting and blocked off my calendar for a "CLE."

You should show up in court dressed like this.

My son is wearing his Argentina #10 at school today. It was a great gift a few years ago because there's no name on the back so for him its Messi but for me its a different Argie #10 and my favorite player of all time.

I've been able to watch most workday games at the office which is a treat for sure. Our tiny company has been enthralled with the action, betting on the games and wondering why we don't watch more soccer during market hours to quell the occasional boredom. So I'm lucky. That's a treat.

However, today my wife asked me if I would mind staying home with our sick daughter as my wife has some important stuff going on today. I didn't tamp down my eagerness by responding in the affirmative, which puzzled my wife.

Cracking a beer at 11am on a workday for World Cup Semis? I mean, is this heaven? I don't care if I come down with SARS or whatever. Worth it! Might just have to stay home tomorrow out of an abundance of caution.

Go Croatia!!!!!
