The overdone hyperbole that everything Messi does has never been done before really makes me want to root against him. Holden fawning over his assist for the 3rd goal like that doesn't happen every week in Europe is over the top bad. One of the goats for sure, but lets not make it more than it is just because he did it.
Agreed. Love Messi, picked Argentina to win, but my gawd. How does Stu commentate with Messi’s shorts in his mouth?

sorry Gator

If I’m looking to be a more-than-every-four-years gal and decided to watch Premier League, who are some players and teams to key on? I need to find “my team,” which might happen organically, but maybe there are starter suggestions.

Is Liverpool too obvious for me? If it helps, my BFF is married to a life-long Wolverhampton fan whom I despise for being a lying, cheating *******, so whoever their biggest rival is could be a nice start.
Depending on your proclivities in the area of humor:

Arsenal has the word "Arse" right in it

Liecester, West Ham United, Wolverhampton are all mentioned in the Monty Python "World Forum/Karl Marx" sketch. (Along with Coventry City which aren't currently in the EPL)

Looking at the current EPL standings, you could also cheer for Wolverhampton's opponents, in the hope that they're relegated.

Do one year of fantasy footie. There's a league that's run by the regulars here. Pretty straightforward. It'll force you to learn players and clubs, watch matches, especially matches you wouldn't otherwise care about (hey, I got to watch Burnley vs Southampton at 1pm on Monday to see if I can get 4 points).
Sadly, the league never materialized this year. Too many are on permanent vacation and the attempt to move to reddit never launched.

Two things from an "every four years guy":

1. Messi has definitely stood out this tournament for his skill. I'm sure some of that is announcer stuff seeping in but he seems really good.

2. What is the most accessible league to watch? Premier? I say this every four years but I want to try to get into soccer. Now that I work from home all the day action in these leagues would be great assuming they're on TV.
Premier League would be very easy. Their contract is owned by NBC, so at least 2 games every weekend are on the main channel. Peacock carries every game that doesn't get national coverage.
NBC also has a YouTube channel that has highlights of every game put into an easy to handle 6-8 minute video. This is a great way to get a "soccer fix" without jumping all the way in.
NBC YouTube

Champion's League and Europa League(the two biggest club competitions in the world) are both almost exclusively on Paramount+, so you have to pay a fee to watch them, but every game is watchable if you do.
CBS/Paramount also have the rights to Italian Serie A(their top league). You can watch every Serie A game on Paramount and sometimes big games will be on the network.

The English FA is contracted through ESPN. All FA Cup, League Cup, and lower division English games are on ESPN+.
ESPN+ also has the German Bundesliga, so all top German games are on ESPN+
ESPN+ also has La Liga, so all top Spanish games are on ESPN+
ESPN+ also has the Dutch Eredivisie, so all top Dutch games are on ESPN+
Again, like CBS, some of the big games from these leagues will find their way onto one of the parent stations. I believe it was this year that I watched Dortmund/Bayern on ESPN2.

French Ligue 1 is on beIN sports... don't have this personally, so no idea how much coverage they have.

Reality is that you can watch soccer almost every day of the week if you're really inclined to it, but having an ESPN sub and Peacock sub will get you a long ways towards watching the teams you want to see.

Careful, the rabbit hole is deep.

You're gotten a lot of advice, so I'll be brief. I always recommend watching for a bit and seeing if a team clicks with you. For whatever reason. scorchy is a Man City fan because he likes the musicians who are Man City fans (Johnny Marr and the Gallagher brothers). I once considered being a Tottenham Hotspur fan solely because of the name's connection to the Henry IV plays. I picked Newcastle in the 90s because they were sponsored by Newcastle Nut Brown Ale and I enjoyed the beer. I eventually settled on Arsenal for the lamest reason possible. They were really good (in the Henry, Viera, Bergkamp era) when I was paying attention. As for celebrity fans, Arsenal has Idris Elba, but also Piers Morgan. I love The Wire more than just about anyone, but I can't take that tradeoff as a net positive.

The advantage of picking a team like Liverpool is that there's likely a supporter's group in your area watching the games in some pub absurdly early in the morning where you're at. So if you want a more social experience, you're more likely to get that with a bigger more popular team than looking for the Pacific Northwest Up the Cherries Bournemouth Supporters Club.

Interesting. Clubs really seem to benefit from the transfer fees. I'm surprised we don't see this more in American sports.

People like the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates would be a billionaire 10 times over on such a scenario.

@krista4 don't let kid ya, spite is a perfectly valid reason to pick a team - I mean my Cincinnati Bengals are a team basically founded completely out of spite.

That said, I agree with the notion of digging into the stories of teams and see what appeals to you. For me, I personally didn't want to pick a "big" team as it felt a little like being born on 3rd base and I don't roll like that. I scouted around mid-pack and promoted teams and enjoyed the story of Hull City's rapid turnaround and ascent during the mid-aughts with the prodigal son angle of Dean Windass (born in Hull) being sold off in his early career to basically save the team financially and then return to the team towards the end of his career to score the goal at Wembley to put them into the Premier League for the first time.

And the orange and black striped kits are brilliant, especially in the eyes of a Bengals fan.

FYI, Wolverhampton's (or just Wolves to fans) biggest historical rival is West Bromwich Albion. They are not in the top flight right now, but you could perhaps quietly root for American striker Daryl Dike to drag "the Brommies" to promotion to the Premiere League next year.

:lmao:

No lies though

As you could imagine in a sport as big as this one, there are a ton of nuts and characters involved in the game.

For those looking for a new team, do not underestimate the entertainment value of choosing a team whose owner gives so little ****s that he tells this to the press

=====================

[Tuttosport] Silvio Berlusconi (Monza owner): "I motivate the players. Now you have matches against Juve, Milan, etc, if you win against one of these big teams I'll send into the dressing room a bus full of sluts."

Grant Wahl's wife Celine Gounder has thankfully killed all the stupidity surrounding his sudden death last week. He died of an undetected aortic aneurysm.

"Grant died from the rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium," she wrote on her husband's Substack newsletter; hemopericardium refers to blood in the sac that surrounds the heart.

"The chest pressure he experienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms. No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him. His death was unrelated to COVID. His death was unrelated to vaccination status. There was nothing nefarious about his death."

"This transition [of his body from Doha to New York] was handled with the utmost care and sensitivity," Gounder wrote. "This was an international matter that required coordination from multiple agencies domestically and internationally, and there was full cooperation from everyone involved. Our sincere gratitude to everyone involved in repatriating Grant, in particular the White House, the U.S. Department of State, FIFA, U.S. Soccer and American Airlines."

RIP Grant Wahl. Massive loss that still has me thinking about him several times each day

I was an "every four years" guy too. I picked up EPL and Champion's, and the occasional elite games from other Euro leagues and it's been great. I'm on the west coast too. I imagine it'd be even easier on the east coast.

Aston Villa are also a possibility as they too are also a midlands rival (Birmingham).

s for celebrity fans, Arsenal has Idris Elba, but also Piers Morgan. I love The Wire more than just about anyone, but I can't take that tradeoff as a net positive.

Yeah, you had me at Idris but lost me at Piers. I think rooting for someone other than Arsenal could be good for Idris and me, though. Lots of playful banter ending in an unexpected but not unwelcome kiss...

Where was I?

Oh yeah, lots and lots of great information from many people in response to my question. Thank you all for that! I'm copying it all into a Word document and then will organize it to get an overall picture of some teams and players (and owners) to watch in particular. I'm serious about that. Luckily Idris loves my nerdy side.

I'm in the eastern time zone and frequently tune in to Saturday morning EPL games while having coffee/breakfast.

Looking forward to the countdown thread

Yada yada yada....Liverpool. YWIA. YNWA.

Much, but weekday CL matches were a great excuse for a 2.5 hour and 2 beer lunch.

These guys are so freaking good. How the heck did Mbappe get that much power on a shot on target while being tackled backwards? Then that shot at the end with the ball above his head. Sheesh.

Seems like the Morocco defender made a rather half-### effort while trying to protect against that French goal. Dude, put your body on the line there (literally). Don’t just make a feeble swing with your leg.

That guy had no chance to save the ball off the line. It was past him and in the netting before he could even get a foot up. Maybe the superslowmo view distorts it on replay but in real time, not a chance. I think you could say maybe the GK should commit to the near post and let the defenders cover everything to the far side, but its also hard to put any fault on him on that play.

Isn't it sort of odd that France is so good at this? Just don't think of that country as particularly athletic in any way.

They are also dominant in rugby right now. Destroyed the Six Nations tournament this year winning all 5 games and the Grand Slam. Extremely fun team to watch.

I don’t believe there is such a thing as an “athletic country”

They’ve got 65 million people, a bunch of money, and they had a huge colonial presence so they are drawing from more than just France proper.
