***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I'm not a germaphobe or clean freak or anything, but kind of yuked out seeing Mbappe putting on Hakimi's wet shirt after trading. Who does that?

Not a lot of middle ground here. Hard to deny they are the best team of my lifetime.

Will be interesting to see how that 3rd place game plays out - do both sides throw caution to the wind with the relatively modest stakes? Does one side or the other have a massive let down having come so close to the final or do they play like they may never reach such heights again?

I hope a couple players that may not have seen the field or were limited get some good minutes. Also hope to get a nice sendoff for Modric.

I have a feeling both teams will try and win, but we may not see an all out effort as they look to their quick vacation and return to club life...

I’ve never been a fan of this game but sometimes you can get a really good one.

I'm not sure. Using the time range you've selected, There's arguments to made for each of the teams below.
Brazil has two titles, a runner up, 4th place and 5 quarter final exits.
Italy has two titles, a runner up, and a 3rd ... the two DNQs hurt though.
Germany has two titles, three runner ups, two 3rds and two quarter final exits.
Argentina has a title, two runner ups, and three quarter final exits, and will either finish 1st or 2nd this time.
I'm not saying France isn't a good team, or they don't belong in the discussion. I'm just saying "hard to deny" isn't accounting for these other runs.
Not meaning to argue or :pokey:,just saw your post and thought I would compare with other teams.

I was going to say something similar

Isn't it sort of odd that France is so good at this? Just don't think of that country as particularly athletic in any way.

They are also dominant in rugby right now. Destroyed the Six Nations tournament this year winning all 5 games and the Grand Slam. Extremely fun team to watch.

Not that it needs reminding but the French are ridiculously deep. They are missing some very good players including the player voted the best player in the world this year. And they are in the WC final.

And it is not just the French team too that France effects. The number of French born players on other WC teams is extraordinary.

Yup. Their B team makes it out of group as does the team of French eligible players that play for other nations.

Spain might have more talent that carry a Spanish passport but play for other nations than on their selección. Of course some of them got a Spanish passport after playing for 2 years in Spain on a visa.

I was an "every four years" guy too. I picked up EPL and Champion's, and the occasional elite games from other Euro leagues and it's been great. I'm on the west coast too. I imagine it'd be even easier on the east coast.

@krista4 - I used to be an every four year guy as well and did something similar after the 2002 World Cup. I started following the EPL heavily. I also got familiar with the Spanish, Italian, German and French for Champions League purposes. I have zero regrets. It definitely makes the end of the NFL season easier to stomach. Love the chemistry club teams have as opposed to most nationals squads. The Champions League final is basically the Super Bowl except most of the world is watching.

And if you're not interested in club, The Euros and Copa America (South American teams) should fill in the gap between World Cups.

yes, I highly recommend as well if you are not going to follow a league/team/player(s) then turn your every 4 years into a every 2 years.

The summer of 2024 is going to be dynamite.

First up will the be the Euro's in Germany (this is the top 24 teams from Europe in a tournament format)

And then there are VERY strong rumors that the normal Copa America will level up again to be a Super Copa. It will contain all 10 South American teams, along with US, Mexico and Canada and three other countries (something like Japan, South Korea and Senegal). This will be an incredible 16 team tournament. It is also possible the US will host this.

Those two tournaments won't likely overlap, so you can watch one full one and follow it up immediately with another.

It is a perfect way to get ready for the big dance in 2026 even if you don't watch any qualifying.

To all the every 4 years people looking for more, I want to recommend that if you have enjoyed reading and posting in the WC thread, that we also have other soccer threads on the FFA with most of the same cast of characters posting.

The USMNT thread is a heavy volume thread focusing on mostly the US players (domestic and abroad) as we track them between national team camps. We also have a small amount of Mexico and Canada discussion in here. Plenty of good ol coach bashing too if that is your thing.

We have a soccer match day thread that you can chat (or listen to info) on any game someone is watching at that time.

And we have the granddaddy soccer thread which is basically a catch all.

I know the sport can feel like you are drinking out of a fire hose at times but just stick with it. You all have already learned a crap ton and if you just keep reading and asking questions it will all come easier and easier.

Soon you will be like me, a decades long hard core fan who can almost explain 50% of the offside rule :)

Also the World Cup Qualifiers in the couple years before the next tournament have a lot of intrigue - usually the European Qualifiers air on one of the cable channels. Given the level of teams and the relatively few spots available (16 out of about 55 sides will make it to the 2026 World Cup) you usually will have a big power or two drawn together fighting for an automatic spot with the other relegated to a do-or-dir playoff. Good stuff.

If England had been a tad less “colonial” they might have as deep a player pool as france.

I can help with that. dm or whatever.

Interesting that the World Cup put the semis on Tuesday/Wednesday and then moved up the Sunday game to be done by NFL kickoff. It's worked out well viewing wise.

What has stunk is Fox Sports hasn't been running an evening replay on TV. I've had to watch the one on their website which doesn't let you skip ahead so your stuck with the 30 min pre-game.

The USMNT thread is fantastic but it took me the whole qualifying cycle to figure out all the player nicknames.

It's been fantastic. I'm assuming they've been careful to avoid overlap with the NFL - at least for the knockout stage.

Being in AZ, the start times for the games has been wonderfully convenient.

The World Cup semis have always been on a Tuesday/Wednesday in the modern era.

The early start I don't think has anything to do with the NFL. FIFA does not schedule around American TV. In 2018, the start time of the final was also in the morning in the US and there was no NFL being played at that time in the summer.

The NY Times speculated that the earlier start time has to do with China

Just insane. Imagine what we were all doing at 16....
I had moves like that. Just not on the soccer field.

Just kidding, I had no moves when I was 16.
