Ok, now that they showed the guy who was offside, I watched again and MAYBE that makes sense. Crazy call though.
I was feeling a bit like Ted Lasso with a “how was that offsides” on the goal, but feel relieved coming in here and see that not just my ignorance being exposed, on that one anyway.

The replay shows why. I think we were all looking at the end of the play but it was offside at the very beginning.
Cool as a cucumber penalty

Yeah, I knew it was on the initial scrum but didn’t realize that because the keeper whiffed that the first player to touch it was the guy who was barely offside
Agree with the idea that the GK playing the ball shouldn't impact offside. Ecuador was onside when they played the ball.
How is this situation any different than a guy standing in an offside position when a defender plays the ball straight to him on a back pass?
There's not double jeopardy. As long as you are playing footie, it's not a red + penalty ever. If in the box, it's just a pk + yellow. Outside the box it would be a red + free kick.Yellow for the GK? Denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity, no?
ok it seems clear the Ecuador players don't look to have been bought as was rumored.
Is this like “a move common to the game of futbol “ sort of thing? I.e. if you straight up closeline a guy in the box could it be PK+red? There's not double jeopardy. Yeah, there is a lot of leeway on it. The general thesis is just being bad is not a red card offense. There's not double jeopardy. As long as you are playing footie, it's not a red + penalty ever. Looked like he reached up and grabbed the leg to trip him after Valencia dribbled around him which wouldn't be playing footie, but yea I can see how that's debatable enough that he was going for the ball and not the leg to not call it.
On the GK punch? The Ecuador guy gets his head on it though.

I'm surprised too given how well they played at the Gold Cup. Competent skill and they knew each other as well as you'd expect given how much they play together.they always looked at least competent.
Gold Cup is not exactly chock full of top sides. They lost to the USA B-team.I'm surprised too given how well they played at the Gold Cup. Competent skill and they knew each other as well as you'd expect given how much they play together.they always looked at least competent.
as in prep time? Yeah, almost all the countries had to scramble. But they had a full cycle together through the massive South American process. And this is an Ecuador team that has had like zero time together, no?

That's also how they look when celebrating their birthday. The Qatari emirs they keep showing look like they’re contemplating murder.

Looked like it to me.He was offsides by a mile anyway.
I only saw it in real time but I believe it was a next to last defender situation. When the keeper gets higher than a defender, HE is usually the last defender. I did see a replay where they showed a still of a leg offsides, but I saw it differently in real time. The pundits did a terrible job explaining the situation either way. I will look for it again later when I have time to see what actually happened.Agree with the idea that the GK playing the ball shouldn't impact offside. Ecuador was onside when they played the ball.

Truly the beautiful game
Looked like he was offside by 5+ yardsDamn - Qatari goal there would have made things a bit more interesting.
Impossible. As bad as we are, we actually have talent. This team is bad.I fear the US will come out nervous and look like Qatar did in the first half...
