***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Nothing gets me more amped about an upset than the words "Skip and Shannon coming up next"!!!
Don’t worry, switch to regular fox. They won’t have any reply’s of the first two games, but they’ll blather about the next one.
Alexi Lalas. Shoot me.
I've met Alexi personally back when I played club ball and he would come coach us on occasion or at local camps. Not the best announcer, but a really awesome dude.
Glad to hear it. Just wish I didn't have to hear him. He's been a face and the voice for U.S. soccer for 30 years, on and off the field. I'd have guess he's a good dude, but he does not come across well. Far too arrogant. He's Skip Bayless with a professional athlete's resume. Time to pass the torch.

Question on the 2026 cup. Have there been host "countries" before, as with some of the rumored bids for 2026?

Just to be extra clear here, the bidding process for 2026 is long over, nothing is rumored in terms of hosting. It was voted on back in 2018 that the US/Mexico/Canada bid won over the Morocco bid.

Gotcha. And is it correct that multiple countries will receive the automatic host slot?

Yes. And it has happened before. Korea and Japan co-hosted in 2002 and both received automatic bids.

Interestingly, 2 out of 32 and 3 out of 48 is identical.

3 out of 32 I think would have been a tough sell.

Definitely would have made concacaf qualifying interesting. Would it have been 1.5 additional spots? 1? 0.5?

I think the real answer would have been the US would have gone it alone or at most added one co-host not two

I really want to meet Derek Rae sometime and troll him on how to pronounce some foreign name or word. Just shake my head at his pronunciation and say it for him. Shake my head when he repeats it even though he says it same as me. Repeat it again like there's some subtle accent he's missing. Rinse and repeat.

he is really a very nice guy. I had lunch with him years ago when he was a young announcer.

If you ever meet him, ask him to drop his Scottish accent. He does an amazing American voice, you would never even guess he had a strong Scottish accent. :)

I don't doubt it, and he's a good announcer overall. Just his obsession with pronouncing every name like it would be in their native language ends up distracting from the game for me.

and right on que :)

Portugal-Ghana coming up later (11am ET KO) for the US audience. As always with Portugal, you may hear me pronounce 1 or 2 names slightly differently in comparison with the Anglo orthodox out of respect for the many POR viewers. But if you play #FIFA23 they won’t be odd to you :)

Yeah. It's one of the things I appreciate about him particularly compared with other English announcers who just butcher the names.

you should find the clip online today of the Italian announcer doing the South Korean names :lmao:

Hard not to feel for that Ayew guy. Played great, tied it up, then like five minutes later they’re down two and he can’t do anything about it.

That would have been an all time World Cup highlight.

Was watching it with my Portuguese friend. She is so sweet and gentle, and was just ripping them for how they played at the end, heh heh.

All right. I have seen nothing today and have time to squeeze in two games tonight after turkey day travels. Most exciting two of the four games? No spoilers, just name names. Thanks!
