***Official 2022 World Cup Thread*** (4 Viewers)

I really want to root for some of these Middle Eastern countries because they have the dual positive traits of playing hard and being an underdog - both traits for teams I like to randomly cheer for.

But, then when the camera cuts to their crowd and it's all men and one recalls the human rights violations for those countries... well, it counteracts a lot of the above.

Incredible double save by the Polish keeper there on the penalty kick and follow up.

For those that did not see, you won't see a better double save all tournament. Given how he laid out for the first, the recovery time for the second is extraordinary

A tale of two sports.

That clip shows soccer at its best and most exciting, with play marching right on after a stopped penalty kick. That clip shows soccer at its worst and most infuriating, with the Saudi player falling and screaming like he was shot after being barely touched.

I fit in the very casual crowd. It's frustrating watching teams that are supposed to be powers (ENG,BEL, HOL) get outplayed and survive with ties and a win. Go underdogs.

yeah that can be VERY frustrating even for us hard cores.

Although the other side is there too. Argentina absolutely dominated their game against Saudi and still lost.

It is definitely a funny sport in that aspect. The low scoring nature of the sport lends to this I think.

Early odds per Draft Kings:

USA -110
Draw +255
Iran +300

Don't mean to be unpatriotic, but if all Iran needs is a draw wouldn't that be the most value bet?
No. The US is better than Iran, so even though Iran will be bunkering and trying for a draw, the most likely result is a US victory. Play this game 10 times and the US probably wins 5 or 6, with 2 or 3 being a draw and 1 or 2 being an Iran victory. That, combined with most of the bettors likely being US fan boys and the expected homer bets and you get the bookies putting that line out there.

I'm no soccer expert having only played through HS (and was not good). But I have watched all the WC games. What I see in the US compared to many lesser ranked teams is lack of cohesion and finishers. Pulisic is what, on the bench 95% of the time for Chelsea? He's our best ??? So while he may be a talent but there isn't much around him to take the pressure off of striker position ball control. And there's less speed with our forwards than even Iran has. There's a reason the US has 1 goal. The real opportunities haven't been there. McKennie has played very well. And Turner in goal. The rest of the squad might not start for any of the top 6 teams in the tournament.

Part of me hopes they don't get their Phantoms after that shutout.

Huh?

Belgium over Canada was easily the biggest upset from the first set of games.

I’m a casual fan. Is it just me or is there way less flopping and acting in World Cup than other matches/tournaments? I haven’t seen it much, if at all

I was thinking that as well. But it comes and goes too so it might bubble up later. The Neymar injury means probably no funny memes this WC though like in a 2018 :)

I think a lot depends on the teams you watch. If it is indeed down overall in the tournament Brazil is doing their part to bring the average back up.

Agree on flopping but there's been an epidemic of guys getting careless with their studs. Seen a ton of ankles and feet getting the business.

Group D Scenarios:

France have advanced - they also win the group unless they lose and Australia win by a combined margin or 7 or more goals

Australia advances with:
A Win
or A Draw and a Tunisia Draw/Loss

Australia cannot advance if they lose

Denmark advances with
A win and...
A Tunisia loss or draw
or
A Tunisia win where Denmark wins by a bigger margin than Tunisia does
or
A Tunisia win where Denmark wins by the same margin and Denmark scores as many or more goals than Tunisia
or
A Tunisia win where Denmark wins by the same margin, Tunisia scores exactly 1 more goal than Denmark, and Denmark has a better fair play record (currently they are both tied at -4)
or
A Tunisia win where Denmark wins by the same margin, Tunisia scores exactly 1 more goal than Denmark, Denmark and Tunisia have identical fair play records and Denmark draws the lucky ping-pong ball

Denmark is eliminated with a loss or draw.

I wonder if it would not be better to have the offside rule be dependent on the position of the feet, rather than someone with an arm or elbow sticking out.

this drives me nuts. The idea that you can be called offside with a part of your body that is not allowed to touch the ball is just insane to me.

I would love your rule tweak and many have suggested it to FIFA, who move like a tectonic plate at times to fix obvious issues.

This next game has all the key ingredients (weekend, good time slot, Mexico, Messi and a meaningful game) to be the most watched non US game of the group stage.

I’ll be curious if it actually beats the US-Wales number. Beating US-England might be tough.

I think it has an really good chance to beat US Wales. That Monday time slot probably cut the audience in half.

The piece I am unsure about is FS1. That is going to be a large drop off from Fox.

By the way, do you know if anyone online is keeping a running tab of the various games tv ratings?

And a related note, Fox has been charging $300k per 30 second commercial in the WC but they doubled that to $600k for the US England game due to the expected large audience. I have not seen any numbers yet but I am expecting over 20m when all platforms are combined.
