54 grand tour stage wins, third all time

I know he really hasn't enjoyed the last few years bc it's such a year round grind, really takes away from family time

he absolutely has the legs to still go on, still brilliant at what he does

wish him well but bummer of an ending

6 rider crash awhile ago (Simon Yates, Landa were in it)

CRAS Steff (TotalEnergies) abandoned the race.

Tomorrow looks fun. Should be a sweet finish

Yes!!

First time on Puy de Dôme since 1988. Tomorrow will be a homage to MVdP’s maternal grandfather, a Tour legend and one of the most popular cyclist of all time. There’s probably no more iconic image from Le Tour than the 1964 photo of Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor charging shoulder to shoulder toward the summit of Stage 20 on Puy de Dôme.

edit: better crop of the iconic shot

Anquetil unfailingly beat Poulidor in the Tour de France and yet Poulidor remained the more popular. "The more unlucky I was, the more the public liked me and the more money I earned", he said. Divisions between fans became marked, which two sociologists studying the impact of the Tour on French society say became emblematic of France old and new. Research showed that more than 4,000 newspaper articles appeared about him in France in just 1974 and that no other rider "had ever incited so many sociological investigations, so many university theses, seeking to find the cause of his prodigious popularity."

Super interesting article on the 1964 Tour

Back then the TdF ran last. Poulidor won the Vuelta, Anquetil the Giro. In Stage 9 at Monaco Poulidor sprinted a lap early and lost. On Stage 10b "Pou-Pou" lost 36 seconds to his rival in a ITT. Anquetil picked up another 37 seconds in the Stage 17 ITT. Pouli finished ahead of his rival on Puy de Dôme, but on Stage 22b he lost another 21 seconds in yet another ITT. The final margin was 55 seconds - his best chance to win TdF. It would be the first of three runner up finishes, eight times on the podium, never the winner. Yet his popularity was such that sociologists studied the phenomenon of his fame for years.

In the Pogačar-Vingegaard era, the duo has captured every summit finish. I'm not sure how many races that is but almost certainly one of them will be the winner.

Damn Girmay is a puss. Sitting in 6th or 7th 100m out and couldn't finish in the top 20.

Heard this on The Cycling Dane YT channel’s Stage 9 preview.
  • Pidcock’s memorable win on Bastille Day last year on Alpe d'Huez
  • O’Conner won on Stage 9 2021 on Tignes
IOW, garbage stat that is incorrect.

Fun stage today. Great showing by Jorgenson (4), Powless (6) and Kuss (20). Disappointing Jorgenson could hold on in the last KM.

Just finished the rewatch (family 1st, Sundays we attend services & go to brunch so missed the live action.)

No fans? I didn’t find that out until this morning. Wow. OK, that was cute to pay homage to what was probably the second greatest TdF ever (1964) but, yeah…whaddayasay we wait another 35 years to try that again, eh? It’s a great climb but riding in silence is just not Le Tour.

Pogi put 8 seconds into Jonas today, closes to 17 seconds. Gosh they seem so close rn I feel like this could go all the way to Stage 17 and possibly even 20 before it’s decided.

Congrats to @Jaysus for winning the Stage & surging into the lead!

MFers out here fishing with Pou-Pou bunting

This happened early in the ride, could have been bad. Thankfully Calmejane wasn’t seriously hurt though he did go back to the medical car for awhile.

Quinn Simmons DNS - medical staff talked him out of starting, he’s been grinding through the effects of his crash and really no point in continuing. Go get some rest, see you at Worlds (has one other race before then if he heals up.)

@jonas_creteur

You can't make this up:
today in the #TDF2023Tour_de_France_ASO_FR_1st_July_30th_July_2023.png , on top of the Puy de Dôme,
Michael Woods @rusty_woods became the oldest rider (36 years & 270 days) to win a mountain top stage finish (no ITT) in the #TDF since...

Raymond Poulidor won on top of Saint-Lary-Soulan in 1974 at the age of 38 years & 91 days.

jorgenson is still only 24, and out of contract

word is he will sign with TJV when the transfer window opens next month

Why do I have a feeling the Colombier stage will be exactly like this unless one of the two GC guys thinks they need the bonus seconds. I guess it’s good since it gets more guys TV time.

Fwiw if I’m Jumbo, I’m not having Sepp go supersonic…all it’s doing is giving Pogo a launching point. Pogo’s strong enough to follow wheels and gap Jonas if launched.

Powless is going to have to get into 2-3 more breaks to win that thing.

Pretty disappointing that he's being gifted the KOM. It's like no one else really cares about it. Maybe everyone assumed Pogo or Jomas would walk away with it. Too much emphasis on stage wins IMO. Maybe they need to juice the KOM prize fund.

The Grand Colombier (Stage 13) is a long climb, which should favor Vingegaard. Stage 17 has two even longer climbs, Col de la Loze (Meribel) and Cormet de Roseland - both are at altitude. The top 4 [longest climbs] in km this year are those 3 plus Tourmalet....but probably length of time climbing (little harder to find) is maybe a better measure. By Profile Score 17 is considered the hardest stage this year by a substantial margin.

Sepp is such an awesome rouleur, he stays up front forever in the mountains. Lot of people speculate they do that so he's always this threat to go in the break. RN he's 9th in GC, so UAE couldn't (in theory) totally ignore it - but the reality is GC Kuss is not a real thing,. They never send him as a satellite, and other than that late solo breakaway on Col de Beixalis a couple years ago, he never rides off from everyone.

Everyone making a big deal about momentum and how Pogi has chipped away in the last 1500 m of the two climbing stages. Well, he's in this position bc Jonas dropped him so badly on Col de Marie Blanque, well over a minute. The only time I've ever seen Jonas panic was that comical Benny Hill triple bike exchange on Stage 5 last year.

IDK how this plays out, they're both on good form and have strong teams.

I didn't realize how similar our teams are; six riders in common (Jonas, Pogi, Van Gils, Philipsen, Peters, Van Der Poel.
  • Climber - Buchman v Kuss
Sepp is steady Eddie, Emanuel was buoyed by a 4th place finish in Stage 5. Overall they are 13th and 9th in GC, should be a good battle here.
  • Unclassed - Anthony Perez v Vegard Stake Laengen
Both older (32 & 34), 4 point riders with a lot of experience, each spending a decade at Cofidis & UAE. The last pick for both of us? The latter is leading 86-14 with 100% of his points from Assists - Teammate stage positions - which is wholly dependent on a teammate finishing Top 3 for the stage. Just here for the ride along.
  • Unclassed - Matej Mohorič v Alex Kirsch
It was 24-28 until yesterday's podium for Mohorič (worth 224 points.) He's a far more accomplished rider with 11 pro wins v 2, this should not be close. I picked KIrsch bc he had a couple top tens in the Giro, decent ITT who can sprint a little. But I'll probably have to make up the deficit somewhere else.

Crazy start. I expect it to be group compacto before long but fun to think about the GC guys hammering in a break all day and eliminating half the field.

Good situation for my velo team at the moment. 2 in front, 1 in first chase, 3 in lead peleton. I still expect this to mostly come together.
