*** Official 2024-25 NHL, Playoff talk... Nothing better *** (2 Viewers)

DeBoer with the early pull of Oettinger and the timeout looked like a panic move and strategic error. I was shocked with the goalie swap. Neither of the 1st 2 Oilers' goals was weak imo.

A rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Final seems about right to this casual observer. Those two teams seem to be the class of their respective conferences.

Except if Hiller didn't completely crap the bed in games 3 & 4 of the first round the Oilers likely would have been swept. He gave them hope and then they turned into a juggernaut as they got healthy. Such a missed chance due to bad coaching.

Lol. You need to let it go. The Oilers didn't just win due to Hiller's bad coaching decisions.

The Kings had leads in the first four games deep into the 3rd period and completely changed their gameplan to allow the Oilers to enter the zone with speed and space (exactly what you don't want to give the Oilers) which plays into what the Oilers do best. They did this to start the 3rd period of each of those games coupled with completely shortening the benches to 4 D-men and 8-9 forwards they just got gassed. If he maintains the approach they used to get the lead it limits the speed/space and gives their defense a better chance. Would the Kings have been able to keep the leads? Who knows, but what we do know is the approach used didn't work. Not only did it not work it was the absolutely worst approach you could take against a team that has the best player in the league that can take over games when he has time and space.

The Oilers also made adjustments to their lineup and game plan both during and between games. So, the Kings did what they did and the Oilers had to execute.
The Kings were a bad combination of aging vets (Doughty, Kopitar) relied on for too large roles and inexperienced youngsters who couldn't step up when the pressure increased.
The Kings won game 1 on a fluke goal and could have been down 3-1 after 4 games too. The Kings really only dominated game 2.
They celebrated in their dressing room like they won the Cup after Game 1. Big mistake.
The team doesn't know what it takes to win the Cup.
You act like the Kings had a straight path to the SCF if they got past Edmonton.

Not at all. My comment was meant to say that Edmonton was close to being out round 1.

I give credit to the Oilers for adjusting and taking advantage of poor game plans by the Kings. You reference the Kings getting lucky in Game 1 but they had a huge lead and started the prevent defense there and it should have cost them the game. Kings got lucky to get that quick winner after the tie but the game was not that close until the Kings prevent defense was implemented. That is another example of poor coaching. It probably did more damage because Hiller saw it as a win when it should never have been that close to begin with.

I am not sure about the pressure increasing and not being able to handle it. Maybe by the coach. The coach put shackles on them in the 3rd period and completely pulled the reigns in on the rotations overusing players to the point of not being effective late in games. This was not how they played 82 games and got to the 2 seed in the Pacific. Hiller was the inexperienced one and it cost them dearly. Maybe the outcome ends up the same but the strategy gave the Oilers an opening (which they took advantage of). I am not taking anything from the Oilers. They are great but allowing them to play to their strengths by not challenging in the neutral zone and allowing McDavid to build up speed entering the zone was the worst choice by a coach all playoffs.

There's some talk of the NHL considering Florida's tax advantage. I'm not sure what they'd do, but whatever it ends up doing, it'll be wrong.

Gonna be a tough series.

Bounce back win tomorrow night.

We stopped skating after we got that 3-1 lead.

I did like how we came out in OT and then that horrendous penalty on Nosek with under 2 mins in the first OT was brutal.

It’s going to be a great series. We are seeing the best two teams again and both are better than they were last season.

Onto game 2.

The Panthers were 31-0 under Maurice in the playoffs when leading after 2 periods prior to Game 1.
I just don’t think McDavid and Draisaitl, etc. will be denied this year. There was a sideways glance between McDavid and Draisaitl on the bench at the end of Game 1 in the Dallas series. No stick breaking or screaming, just a glance that showed they were pissed off and then they kicked it into another gear.

The passes on that OT goal were amazing.
Nuge to Bouchard to Nuge to Perry to McDavid over to Draisaitl and it’s in the net. They just capitalized on the Panthers aggressive PK.

Dallas Stars fire Pete DeBoer. I'm not surprised after he embarrassed Oettinger with the early pull and his comments after the game. Oettinger is a young goalie with a long contract. He might have told management that either Petey goes or you trade me.
DeBoer gets his teams to the end (Conference or SC final), but they don't win it.

Only in the NHL does a guy who gets to the conference finals six out of the last seven years get fired three separate times.

NHL owners by and large are often of the mindset that you win the Cup or it's not good enough.

That Dallas job is going to be a prime hiring. Honestly, wouldn't surprise me if Laviolette ends up there.
Team is pretty loaded. You have Benn and Duchene coming off the books and quite a bit of cap room. Very good defense, elite gk and solid offense.
Been a lot of chatter about them moving Robertson in the offseason as well and he'll bring in a massive return. They do probably need to move him as they may not have the cap room to keep him being that they just extended Wyatt Johnston at a bigger number and Harley is coming up soon.
Oh, and the are in a tax free state!

Game one of the finals was sweet. Very clear that these two teams are cream of the crop. They are fast, hit everything, attack, for a neutral it's incredible hockey.

Now you are under estimating this Panthers team.

Let’s see what happens tonight.

Dumb firing.

Just dumb.

They’ll find out how dumb when they take a step back next year.

149-68 in three seasons in Dallas along with 3 WCF appearances

But the biggest stat of all: 1 under-the-bus throwing of your franchise goalie

Not sure where I'm underestimated the Panthers. You were saying the Panthers were going to repeat as SC champs earlier in the thread. So I can't state a strong belief in my team?

The series is far from over. I just can't see the Oilers being denied the Cup this year.

I hope Dallas doesn't go the retread route with a Laviolette, Torts, etc. and gives someone like Steve Ott a chance to be HC.
