*** Official 2024-25 NHL, Playoff talk... Nothing better *** (7 Viewers)

Rod the Bod is the coaching equivalent of Tom Wilson. I hate the guy so much because he's good. He gets his teams ready, and they play up to the occasion.
Even as a Rangers fan, I am a huge fan of Rod. Loved him as a player and he's a fantastic coach - easy to see that he commands respect and demands accountability.

Panthers seize control of the series tonight and get a chance to close it out Friday night at home.

Yes I am a Panthers homer but we are finally playing our style of game in this series. Without the stellar play of Woll Sunday night we would have put 4-5 on them instead of just 2. Toronto looked lifeless in game 4. It was odd. Like disinterested for lack of a better term.

The Panthers are the physically superior team and I expect them to really hit the gas tonight even harder on the forecheck. Hit em hard and they will wilt.

That 3rd line of Marchand, Lustolorian and Lundell has really been unbelievable. + 7 out scoring 7-1.

Hope that continues.

Sounds like Tocchet about to be named Flyers coach. Adam Foote just named Canucks coach.

Seems like just about every big name NHL player in the '80s and '90s is either a head coach, assistant coach, GM or team president. No one takes care of their own more than the NHL does.

Just when Toronto looks like it’s finally exorcised its playoff demons, they go Toronto again. Have to give full credit to the Panthers though - they just know what it takes.

Two big saves in the first for Bob - one vs Nylander then vs Knies late and then in was game over. Seems to me leaf’s get an early lead they play good. They don’t they drop their heads. Matthew’s been almost invisible. Panthers crushed them. I was surprised. I’m passively rooting for Leafs and Oilers.

I’m surprised Berube let them get so downtrodden, but as you and I know as Rangers fans, coaches can only do so much and it’s mainly up to the players to make it happen.

ETA: can’t wait for Biz Nasty’s reaction as a huge Leafs fan.

It’s a joyous thing to watch when the greatest offensive players play a 200 foot game and backcheck like that.

And no one cycles through the same people as much as the NHL does either. Soon to be 70 year old Ken Holland named as GM and VP of the LA Kings.

And sounds like Marc Bergevin is the leading contender to replace Lamoriello as Isles’ GM.

Very excited for tomorrow nights game. We will be there as usual.

I fully expect to close it out. Then onto Carolina unless a dramtic turn of events takes place.

Hurricanes vs the Panthers is going to be a brutal series. I fear Carolina more than any other team. They match up well vs our Cats. They are a hard hitting, board hoarding team full of grinders.

It will be a tough series.

wondering when the canes will unleash Nikishin. seems like 25-26.

Panthers blow em out Game 5 and you would think they should have all the momentum tonight, they almost never lose a 3rd period
Low and behold they find themselves down 1-0, haven't scored a goal all night.

I'm a little surprised but hats off to the Leafs for coming out strong tonight, much better defense vs last game.

Hats off to the Leafs tonight. They earned it this evening.

Two best words in sports Sunday night.

Game Seven.

The NHL shows why it’s the best playoff system in the world.

Two teams playing their balls out with no flags, whistles, controversial calls……etc.

Just two teams balls to the wall deciding it on the ice.

How do Leafs fans put themselves through this every year.
That team has no heart.
And now they’re going to have no Marner.
That should increase their heart a bit. Addition by subtraction.
His offensive production is going to be tough to replace, but I guess it matters much less if he can't get it done in the playoffs. He's basically a slightly younger version of Artemi Panarin in terms of a playmaker who helps get you there with great regular season stats but then disappears in the playoffs.

Give Nylander the C, if Matthews doesn't like it ship him out for a haul of draft picks. Build around Nylander and Knies.
Matthews' $13.25 mill contract might be a tough one to move. He's currently the highest paid NHL player. Draisaitl's contract eclipses it next season.

I don't think Matthews' contract would be that tough to move for a team that has tons of cap space, especially with the cap set to spike in the next few years. All it takes is one young up and coming team with cap space (e.g., Anaheim, Utah). But with Marner likely to roll off, I can't see them shedding both him and Matthews unless they got some real proven talent in return.

I think it would be tough for the Leafs to move the contract because for a lot of teams they are going to need to move $ out to take on that contract. Teams with lots of cap space probably can only offer draft picks in return and that doesn't work for Toronto because they are looking to retool not rebuild.
It will be tough for them to retain both Marner and Tavares who made around $11 million this season.
Marner will probably be looking for a raise, but Tavares should be expecting a big cut in pay.

Might not be a bad idea to let Marner walk and buy out Tavares if they can't trade him. Not sure what the cap hit would be for Tavares though, so easier said than done.

Tavares is a UFA at the end of this season. So,the Leafs can decide not to re-sign him.

What's the deal with Tavares? Statistically, he looks like he's still a productive player. I don't want the Caps to do anything major in terms of trading away their future, but I would like to see them take advantage of what is probably one more year of Ovechkin and be aggressive this offseason. If Tavares can be had for a good price, maybe that's something they consider?

Thanks - wasn’t following his contract situation. So sans Marner and Tavares, the Leafs should have some healthy cap space. Unfortunately for them, it’s not a bumper crop of UFAs this year. The following season will be McDavid and Eichel if they don’t get locked up beforehand.

It will be interesting to see what they do. They should have some money to spend, with Oshie and Backstrom coming off the books. They could use another scorer to help take some pressure off Ovi.

I think a new team, new atmosphere would do a world of good for Marner. Get him in with a team with a strong leadership group and let him get to understand the effort required and the type of play required to be successful in the playoffs. If he can get that and change certain aspects of his game to fit that, he may find his playoff fortunes changing.

He's going to follow the dollars like most do. Lots of rumors here in Detroit that the Wings will go hard after him. We'll see.

It would be nice to do something with Carlson’s $8m hit, but I have no idea if that’s possible. Looks like they are currently projected for about $11m in cap space next year. And then a ton of space after that with nobody currently on the team that I think they’ll need to spend a huge amount on.

Always worried about brining in a guy that is going to be 70. I wasn't a fan of Blake the GM as he made some really bad decisions so we will see how this goes. Maybe Holland knows the Oiler kryptonite. I know it's not the prevent defense with a lead in the 3rd period.....

Matthews is going nowhere.

Marner is a goner.

Tavares had a nice season but is getting up there.

Leafs fans are beside themselves….but hey look on the bright side you took the defending cup champions to a game 7.

Is what it is.

This is without a doubt the most difficult title to win in all of sports.

Bar none.

Fixed with the bolded. Seriously though, people are focusing a ton on the Leafs' failure - and a lot is deserving - but not giving the Panthers enough credit. Also, while it's coulda/shoulda/woulda, and the Panthers can point to their own injuries, but the loss of Stolarz proved very large for the Leafs. Woll was anything but a wall.

Woll was the reason you got to game 7 though. He played out of his mind in game 6.

Not me (I'm a lowly Rangers fan), but yes Woll did have a monster game 6. He certainly is down the list of issues the team had, but I think the team might have had a bit more confidence with Stolarz back there as a backstop and puck handler. But it's all speculation - kudos to the Panthers.

In case you needed a chuckle

In case you needed a chuckle

Man, the Super Bowl shuffle really spawned a lot of bad rap team-related songs back then. Not too many hockey ones though, at least with players doing the rapping.

In honor of the former Whalers playing in the ECF tonight:

Whalermania

Be forewarned...you can never unsee, or unlisten to, this.
