***official 2024/25 women’s college bball thread*** paige gets her title and will soon be beat up and abused in the wnba (2 Viewers)

Helluva a game going on right now between the Sun and Storm.

Not sure why the W scheduled all of today's games at the same time.

So glad for the $35 League Pass and YTV's multiview.

Son and I just planned a road trip to see Phoenix @ Indiana on July 12th. Just a short 3-hour drive from Chicago. Guys trip to see the WNBA while my wife and daughter are at a water polo tourney in Michigan.

Looking forward to it. Tix are pretty reasonable too, and we will see better basketball than if we stayed local and went to a Bulls game.

Lost in Angel Reese's offensive rebounding is Cardoso's. Both right at the top of the league OReb rate.

It's amazing that there are so many great aspects to this rivalry that Boston-Cardoso almost gets overlooked.

Delino's baby girl, Diamond, is the one that delivered the foul that will be on the hot take circuit tomorrow while everybody ignores every other aspect of this outstanding game.

Diamond had a really good 1st 5 years to her career, including helping Chicago win the 2021 title. Then she got a tumor on her spine.

She's back for the first time since 2022 after learning how to walk again.

Sky up, but it's over if Chennedy is really hurt.

They play solid defense, amazing rebounding, but they basically suck offensively. At times the team is just all effort, asking Chennedy to create everything on the offense.

BS call on Cardoso. She's starting to come into her own after the injury, reminding everybody why she only lost 1 game in the last 2 years.

What an effing game.

I hate that most are just going to watch a highlight reel tomorrow that their favorite shock jock gives them.

Because this one is a great one in the moment.

I'm sorry, if you say you love effort and hate the Sky......I'm not going to say it because I know Joe wouldn't love it.
The Sky play hard, which is awesome. Everyone should love to see that effort.

Indiana needs a different coach. She’s awful.
For a time, I thought Sides should be fired.

But based on what they've got, they are doing very well. They have great offensive personnel, and bad defensive personnel.

They have the personnel and system to score some points. We'll see if they ever start playing any defense, which is apparently Sides' focus.

Seems like a mess, but I think both teams are doing very well based on what was expected of them.

Sorry, I've had few cold pops.

They were just throwing haymakers all game. Just a seemingly random game where neither of these teams have any chance of a title.

Everything and more that you want from Clark. 17-13-6, and as @Alex P Keaton said, they dropped a handful of easy baskets from Clark.
Reese, Chennedy, and Carodoso all throwing it down.

So awesome. And so much more to come.

I know everyone was devastated because there were no games in the W last night. But fear not, it was because the Commissioner's Cup Championship game is tonight.

Lynx-Liberty. Should be a doozy. Both teams look unstoppable at the moment.
Winning team gets a $500K cash payout, along with Coinbase throwing in $5K in pretend money per player.

Also, Dearica Hamby is filling in for Brink on the 3x3 Olympic team.
Rhyne Howard is still dealing with an injury, so there's a chance they might be looking for another replacement.

And looking for news on this, did you guys know that Jimmer Fredette is stilling kicking it on the men's 3x3 team?

And the WNBA messed up with the Cup this year

The WNBA (and NBA which kind of sort of owns the league) have known since December that the Barclays Center would be unavailable on June 25, needing to set up for the NBA Draft.

So they just spent 6 months hoping that the Liberty wouldn't earn home court for the Cup. Of the Liberty are very good, so it's not a real shock.

8 days ago they finally decided to address the issue (when the Liberty clinched). Game will be played at UBS where the Islanders play. While not insane, it's still a fairly inconvenient trip for Liberty fans when there was enough time to avoid the situation.

They've got a lot of scheduling issues in an Olympic year, but still not a good look.

I wonder if this thread will be a microcosm of the Clark influence and progression for the WNBA. By that I mean, I have a lot less interest in visiting this thread as it is WNBA based than the Clark thread thinking there will be more interesting discussion about impact, treatment, fluctuation etc caused by her hype. It's a more interesting discussion point to me.

I will be interested to see if this fizzles out to just the few posters that have dominated the posts so far or if there will still be a wider audience.
To harken back to this, I think we have the answer now.

When the Caitlan Clark thread was active (before it was renamed the wnba thread shortly before it was locked as a courtesty to this one), the last two weeks or so of it had like 13 pages of activity.

This thread is over two weeks old now and has 4 1/2, and it's basically one person talking to himself about the WNBA.

It's the lull before the storm next year when Paige Buckets arrives.

Not sure why the W has an age limit of 22 for its draft - have to imagine that gets changed at some point as it's misaligned with the NBA. Best player in college hoops is JuJu Watkins, IMO. She's not eligible for the draft until 2027 as things stand.

By then, I think Portland will have an expansion team, JuJu comes to Portland and inks a $50MM deal with Nike.

Is the 22 year old thing new or different for international players?

Jade Melbourne for the Mystics got drafted in 2022 before she even turned 20. She's still the youngest player in the league (doesn't turn 22 until August).

Ah, looks like it was a "4 years removed from High School" sort of thing. I guess those Aussie high schools put her on the fast track to get her WNBA career started.

Wish I could tell you - I just did a quick search and it said players have to be 22, but not sure if that applies to foreigners. Jade was drafted in 2022 but stayed in Australia for a year to play professionally before joining the W.

I also see some things about going early if you wave all remaining college eligibility.

Which would make sense for international players.

There are so many international leagues where skipping college can make sense.

It's pretty weird that women's basketball seems to be fairly popular all over the world, just not where all the best basketball players in the world are.

But speaking of Ms. Buckets, WNBA Tankathon Current Draft Order is pretty helpful.

WNBA uses records for the last 2 seasons, so a handy reference is helpful.
Because of this, Sunday's loss put the Fever back in the driver's seat for the #1 pick.

Obviously, the season is young, and with the way they are starting to click offensively and have the hardest parts of their schedule behind them, it's hard to imagine them actually ending up with the top lottery odds.

But with the 2-year window, they wouldn't have to have the worst record this year to be at the top of the lottery.

Kiki Iriafen should get some consideration at 1.01. Not sure why a 5'11" guard would go before a 6'3" PF other than ticket sales. Kiki and JuJu together at USC

Maybe Caitlin or Paige could buck the trend, but Taurasi and Cynthia Cooper are still the only true guards to be the best player on a WNBA champion or lead a college dynasty.

Considering Maya and Swoopes to be wings/3's of course.

Man, it's really sad what's happened to the Oregon State Women's team on account of the school not landing in a big conference. The mass exodus of talent just sucks.
i agree hansford is a girl i watched play in high school and now she is at iowa state instead of oregon state take that to the bank brohan

Oof. I don't think there's a single decent human being that loves these re-alignments.

It's going to make few people a lot of money, so it has to happen, but no regular person likes it.

Speaking of corporate interests over what people want, Prime Video will not let me pause this game to take a piss even though I have League Pass.

Finally found out why Sloot's been out.

Her mom died and her teammates said take a month, we got you.
Pretty awesome that her teammates had her back on this one.

Rooting for the Lynx, but it looks like they Liberty are about to pull away.

What a game.
Stewart and Sabrina were fantastic, but the Lynx doing Lynx things just gets to be relentless.

McBride and Smith cold tonight? Fine Carleton will go 6-8 from 3, and Zandalasini will come in drop 3 straight 3's to turn the tide.

Lynx just have so much speed, spacing and ball movement.

Ukraine thread vibes.

In the injury season from hell, Dallas is bringing in veteran PG, Odyssey SIms (scored 30 PPG on the 40-0 Baylor team with Griner), even though rookie Jacy Sheldon has performed fairly well after the Wings gave her minutes out of desperation. 12 PPG since they were forced to play her isn't too bad for a player that was never supposed to play at all this season.

And poor Sheldon. She just happened to be taken with the pick right before Angel Reese. Dallas fans are a little irritated right not. Well for that, and it's a Playoffs semi-finals team from last year that hasn't won a game since May.

She's doing well though. It just takes guards a long time to develop in this league. Which highlights even more how special it is what Clark is doing.

Oh man, some really fun games tonight. The rookies have been on a heater lately playing against other young, rebuilding teams. Tonight they get some vets.

A'Ja Wilson gets her first crack at Angel Reese. A'ja is having one of those "GOAT that's a little pissed off" seasons, and if she keeps doing what she's been doing, there is no MVP race.
I have a feeling she might drop 40 tonight.
This could just be a good ol' country *** whipping. The Sky play hard and always make a game of it even with that broken offense, but when young team runs into a back-to-back Champ with a chip on their shoulder, it could get ugly.

Clark and the Fever have to go on the road to face a lot of veteran talent in Seattle. It took a couple of weeks to get Skylar and Nneka to get adjusted, but they are starting to look good. What Skylar is doing having been away for 20 months to have a baby is incredible.

It'll be a huge test for the Fever.

The matinee might have stolen the show.
3-13 Dallas Wings knock off the 13-3 Lynx fresh off a huge Commissioner's Cup win.

Obvious trap game, but I don't think there are any true trap games in this league.
Imagine the NBA if there were only 144 roster spots full of underpaid players grinding it out to hang onto a precious roster spot (as "real sports fans" are busy focusing on which team is going to light a roster spot on fire for Bronny)

Odyssey Sims was playing in Paris 48 hours ago just hoping for a call from the W. Balled her *** off in this game. Along with all the rest, of course.

And Arike. Wow.

Good for the WIngs. All they've gone through this year getting their first W in the month of June.

A nearly impossible task for the Sky, but if they were to have a shot, it would involve Mabrey and Chennedy feeling it, as they seem to be early on.

It's probably over as A'ja seems intent on the putting the Sky's rookie bigs in the blender.

But the Sky kids play with an edge. They probably don't know they are supposed to get blown out right now. Especially Chennedy.

They are going to lose, and Angel, for the most part, has been taken to school by the best player in the league.

But she keeps grinding it out, and now has the most consecutive double-doubles not just for a rookie, but the most of any player since Candace Parker in 2015.

Only caught the first quarter of the Fever-Storm game so far, but Caitlin seems to be doing pretty well in an incredibly tough spot.

Skylar is a good defender, but the big thing is she can be really aggressive because Ezi and Horston are so good. A couple beautiful Clark-Boston pick and rolls where Clark drops a dime to a wide open Boston only to find out that wide open against the Storm only lasts a millisecond. The help defense just gets there so freaking fast.

And with Jewell Loyd catching fire early, looks like a tough night coming for the young Fever.

Really scary moment early. Clark went up for a lay-up and her knee didn't give her any lift. Looked like she tweeked it a bit, but seemed to be fine.
