***official 2024/25 women’s college bball thread*** paige gets her title and will soon be beat up and abused in the wnba (2 Viewers)

This lady seems not very bright.

"Why couldn't they have put the whole WNBA on that cover and said the WNBA is the league of the year?" Uh, because no one in their right mind would say a league that still lost money despite Clark was the league of the year.

"Because when we just keep singling out one player it creates hard feelings." OH, NO! She basically just called the WNBA soft.

"And so now you're starting to hear stories of racism within the WNBA and I don't want to hear that." That sounds like code for, "I don't want to hear about the racism that obviously exists in our league against Clark and other players of her skin color."

Racism of any kind is wrong, and the geniuses at the WNBA still haven't figured that out.
She's a moron. This was obviously an incredibly stupid thing to say or think.

She's one idiotic owner that does not speak for the WNBA. Just like Jerry Jones doesn't represent everything the NFL is about or believes. Or any other moron owner in any league.

She's a terrible owner.
She became an owner because she was married to Robert Johnson. The former Charlotte Bobcats owner that named the team after himself.

She divorced Bob in 2002, took $700 million from the divorce, married the judge that presided over the divorce, and used some of that money to buy the Washington Mystics.

People can hate on the W all they want for whatever reason, but please don't base it on what this idiot said.
If that is true, then other owners, coaches, players, etc. will speak out against what she said and in support of Clark and Time's decision to make her Athlete of the Year. I won't hold my breath.

She's a brain surgeon compared to Sheryl Swoopes.

@Ramblin Wreck We got a big one tomorrow between your Jackets and my Heels.

I think UNC has a chance to do some big things, but GT may be the most truly under the radar good team in the country. Not a crazy hard schedule so far, but they are one of the few remaining unbeatens (along with the boys). But they thumped Oregon, and those pesky SD State Jackrabbits.

9th in the country in 3-pointers made. They are draining it from deep, including the 6'6" Spaniard, Ariadna Termis, knocking them down at a 42% clip.

UNC's defense has been shutting everybody down, but GT can run them out of the gym if they get hot.

It'll be a great test for both teams.

Similar deal with the undefeated Michigan State team hosting Iowa.

Tennessee had their shooting stroke last night.

New NCAA record for 3's in a game (30)
New SEC record for points in a game (139)

And of course, UT being UT, they forced 44 turnovers.

Feel bad of the NC Central Eagles, who drop to 0-12.

Tonie Morgan was absolutely lighting us up before she got hurt. I hope she's okay, but it looked bad.

GT has an absolute stud freshman with Dani Carnegie.

Barring a very unlikely miracle, congrats Wreck. The Jackets look really, really good. This was a clinic on both ends for the floor. Morgan and Carnegie are special (glad Morgan was able to come back from that knee injury).

I could see them having trouble with good low post players (like Gakdeng today), but I don't see any reason they can't be the 2nd best team in the ACC (they were picked to be 10th). Duke probably is, but GT seems right there with them, to me.

Still not sure how good GT is but Morgan, Dunn, Carnegie combo looks good.

UConn finally got somebody besides Paige and Strong going. Those two and Aslynn Shade all dropped 27+ against Iowa State. Shade dropped 20 points in the 1st freakin' quarter. They'll need that, along with a healthy Fudd.

UNC tipping off with Florida here in a bit. Florida isn't having a great season, but they do have Shaq's daughter, Me'Arah.

And Michigan might have had a tough loss to Oklahoma last night, but that program is going to be special if Swords, Holloway, and Olson stay together for 3-4 years.

Ready for the conference season to really get started, and looking forward to seeing some new opponents come to Eugene this year. As fun as the 98-36 squeaker over Air Force was last night for the 4500 of us who showed up at MKA, let's bring on the B1G!

Huge game tomorrow night with Juju and Paige squaring off to see who the 2nd best player in the nation is. Hidalgo will be watching with her feet up after being the best player on the court against both of them.

10-1 Alabama in the process of knocking off undefeated Michigan State. Of course it's only on Baller TV, which nobody has. This Baller TV/Flo Sports crap has to stop.

Man, that game delivered in every possible way. All the stars showed up.

If Paige and Kiki weren't coming out at the same time, that game might have had 4 #1 overall WNBA draft picks. I don't know if Strong will be, but she's so damn good. She's got a lot of Phee in her game (and she probably won't be the #1 overall pick for the same reasons).

Such an impressive comeback for UConn. I thought it was over. Even in a loss, this is the most impressed I've been with them all year. If Fudd ever gets healthy, they could do some damage.

Obviously, USC is in a great spot. Juju and Kiki kicking ***. Kennedy Smith didn't have a huge game, but her impact was certainly felt in her first game back.

It was such a bummer that Syla Swords couldn't play. Syla v. Juju on a Sunday night in LA would have been fun.

Juju was wonderful as always. As she's done a lot this year, she spent most of the 1st quarter getting her teammates rolling, and then just took over.

A game effort by Michigan though. They kept it close for basically 3 quarters, but beating USC is a tall task for anybody.

There was an A'ja Wilson spotting at the UNC-Miami game. We know she'll be hanging out with her boyfriend in Miami when Unrivaled swings through town here in a couple weeks.

Michigan finishing up the LA Big Ten road trip with UCLA today.

Hopefully Syla can play in this one because these Michigan kids keep knocking at the door of the big upset (USC East, Oklahoma, and USC West), so hopefully, they get an honest chance at this one.

But they probably don't have much chance, either way. UCLA is sort of underrated for a #1 overall undefeated team. They beat the Gamecocks convincingly, so they have to be #1 until they lose, but it doesn't seem like a lot of people view them to be as dominant as they probably are.

But they certainly look that way. In addition to a 6'7" stud in Lauren Betts, they are loaded. Kiki Rice is finally healthy, and looks like she'll be a Top 5 draft pick next year along with Betts. Janiah Barker is going to be a 1st round WNBA pick this year on talent and athleticism alone, even though she's still developing. I don't know of another team with a pair of 6'3" forwards that can drain 3's like Gardiner and Dugalic.
Kendall Dudley is a stud freshman.

They go 8 deep before you even get to Londynn Jones, who shot the Gamecocks out of the gym.

The top is absolutely loaded, and there are 7 teams that could make the case for being the best in the country. UCLA being the cream of that crop doesn't seem far fetched.

And speaking of UCLA and other stud programs, the Players Era NIL Tourney coming to the women's game is a pretty big deal.

$1 million each in NIL money for 4 teams USC East, UCLA, Texas and Duke for 2025. Imagine that for a recruiting pitch for a 17 year old? On top of all the other NIL money, about $100K guaranteed for a 3 day tournament in Las Vegas over Thanksgiving.

Who knows what it means for all the traditional Thanksgiving Feast Week tournaments where teams usually have to pay to go there, but whatever. That's a lot of cash being thrown around.

I don't know the economics of women's basketball, but somebody is dropping a $4 million bet that people give a damn.
That $4 million bet doesn't even involve the most marketable stars in 2025 (Juju, Hidalgo, possibly Sarah Strong).

The Michigan freshmen make another great effort, but come up short.
Syla and Olson rose to the occasion, but 3 freshmen with no bigs just is not beating this UCLA team.

UCLA is so damn good. They remind me a bit of the Minnesota Lynx this year.
Great team defense, they move the ball well. A never ending stream of bigs that can defend, shoot, and pass.

A game effort by the Heels, but Hidalgo and Miles are just so damn good.

Hidalgo is making a strong case for National Player of the Year.

Miles is making the decision for the Sparks really hard. Kiki is the presumed #2 pick and she's fantastic. But Miles is making it tough. She has great passing and vision, but has not been a great 3 point shooter. This year, she's at 45% and today was just dropping step back 3 after step back 3.

She's obviously not making it past the Sky, but if she keeps doing what she's doing, the Sparks might take her over Kiki.

It sucks for Tennessee to lose, but Oklahoma was always going to be a problem for them.

UT is awesome, and will dominate a shallow team with no veteran leadership. But OU has depth and veteran leadership. Not to mention a dominant big like Beers.

Peyton Verhulst is not talked about much, but she's so awesome. People talk about getting a shot off in a phone booth, and that's just what Verhulst does. Lightning quick release, no wasted motion.

Great game, and both of these teams could do some special things.

South Carolina's Ashlyn Watkins out for the year with a torn ACL. A huge blow, but SC is probably the only team that could lose a player of her caliber and still have reasonable hopes of winning a national title.

Big Ten is giving us some good ones tonight.
Ohio State is one of few remaining unbeatens, but hasn't played anybody. Tonight they get the Michigan kids who have been knocking on the door of the big upset, and maybe this is the one.

USC plays Maryland, also still unbeaten. USC is better, but Maryland is loaded with a great coach and is a sneaky Final Four bet.

I hate that the PAC-12 is gone and find a coast to coast BIG irritating, but man it does deliver a hell of a loaded women's basketball conference.

Duke-UNC was an absolute banger if you love hard nosed defense.
Both teams strong defensively that can struggle offensively at times. And oh man, we got all that in this one.

16-16 at halftime. 40-40 at the end of regulation. 43-43 with 1 minute left in OT.

And then Lexi Donarski hit the shot heard round the world to make it 46-43 (her first make of the game), which somehow felt like an insurmountable lead.

This game was oddly exhilarating.

Gakdeng being in foul trouble really hurt, but it gave 6'5' freshman Blanca Thomas some meaningful minutes, and she looked great.
Both of these teams have some great young players, and I expect some great competitive games.

I don't expect to ever see a game quite like this one though.

And Wreck, I'm sorry about your Yellow Jackets, but good for VT. Nice to see VT and Wenzel get a big win after Kentucky poached their coach and half the team.

I assume GT got caught looking ahead to Notre Dame.

We are now down to 3 unbeatens (UCLA, LSU, OSU).

Perfect day for 2 screens with this massive Texas-South Carolina game.

Dawn Stailey rocking a sweet Eagles jacket. Nice of her to use her platform to help promote a fledgling league like the NFL.

Ducks gave up a 27-0 run in Columbus in the first half. Couldn’t handle the press and couldn’t make a shot when they did. That wasn’t fun to watch.
Unlike last year this team has some fight in them and they keep playing. But pretty sure they’ll be happy to be back in Eugene for the next three games and let teams travel across country to play them.

Unrivaled kicks off tomorrow night with the two founders, who also just batted it out in an amazing WNBA FInals, going head to head.

The schedule is awesome. 2 games every Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Every game on TNT or TruTV (also Max).

This is going to be fascinating if it works, and I think it will.
Players in other sports/leagues have never tried this (AFAIK), but women's basketball is in a very unique spot right now.

I didn't see the game (I assume it was on B1G plus or something), but no shame in losing to OSU on the road. Hell, giving up a 27-0 run to one of the best teams in the country and still making a game of it is pretty admirable.

And Wreck, I hope this ND-GT games is a good one. A couple of lumps with Carnegie hurt, but GT was looking pretty legit.

It's also starting to look pretty plausible that ND could have the #2 and #3 picks in the upcoming draft. Miles is now the odds on favorite to go #2 to the Sparks, and Citron might make the most sense for the Sky.

Crap. Hidalgo and Carnegie both still out. That sucks.

Carnegie is too important. GT has no chance tonight. Just need to get her back healthy for the February run.

I agree on the former, but I'm not sure about the latter. These Jackets are giving them hell, even with Tonie Morgan missing most of the 2nd quarter.
Becoming a big fan of Chit Chat Wright (or is it Chitchat?). I like what Nell has cooking with this team.

ND probably still going to be too much, but they are making it interesting.

Another cool think about Unrivaled is that the 4th quarter is not timed, which should eliminate the least pleasurable part of watching a basketball game (where the last 1:00 of game action takes 30 minutes and nothing but foul shots).

Games slotted for 1 hour.
1st 3 quarters are 7:00. Whatever the score of the leading team is at the start of the 4th quarter, add 11, and they play to that. So, if it's 60 to 58, the first team to 71 wins.

Speaking of foul shots, those will be quicker too. Whether it's a 1,2, or 3 point foul, the player only takes one foul shot worth all the points. Less time watching foul shots, and stakes are pretty high for that one shot.

We'll see how it goes, but they definitely are trying some things to make a great viewing experience.

We've seen alternate leagues try different things in other sports, but this is pretty unique that they are doing it with the best players in the world (minus the reigning MVP and ROY, I guess).

Just an awesome 1st game. I've missed watching Phee so much.

Rickea is going to be a mf'ing problem.

Good to see Jewel get back into form.

And holy hell, SDS hitting the game winner was just perfect.

They've got something cooking here.

Ducks were terrible early and spotted Iowa 11 points, were down 10 at half, and six going into the fourth. But they fought back and squeaked out a 50-49 win. Good to see the effort and fight from the squad. Needed that one.

Iowa is a solid team and was off to a promising start, but after this 5 game skid, making the tournament doesn't seem likely.
No bad losses, and all were to solid to really good teams. I missed the Oregon game, but it sounds like a similar story. They were competitive, but couldn't pull it out. it's not like it gets any easier and double-digit losses is a near given at this point.

I see you guys have Maryland and UCLA coming to town soon 3 days a part. That'll be brutal. I assume you'll be there, and that sounds like a lot of fun.

Been a week without women's basketball, which obviously sucks. But we have Selection Sunday today and the first round of the Unrivaled Playoffs.

This women's college season has been so awesome. The days of UConn or Tennessee and log out are long gone. All the top 5-6 teams have all lost to each other. Hell, Notre Dame beat 3 of the top 5 teams and they will only be a 2-seed. Assume the #1's will be UCLA, USC, USC, and Texas. Slight case for UConn, but I think it's Texas.

But that highlights the parity. UConn curbstomped the Gamecocks in Columbia and only lost a couple of games, and they will be a 2-seed. At least 5 teams could win it all, and it would not be a surprise.

Alot of 3, 4, 5, 6 seeds that can do a lot of damage too.

I know it's a very unpopular opinion, but the 3 year thing just makes NCAAW so much more entertaining than NCAAM. No shade to the men's game, it's awesome. But ask the average person to name a men's college basketball player? Maybe they know Cooper Flagg, but that's probably it. Of course, he won't be part of college basketball in a few months.

Women have Juju, Hannah, Madison, Syla, Toby, Mikayla, Sarah, and more that are dominant now and will be for years to come.

Caitlin was a seismic shift. But the impact wouldn't have been nearly as strong if she'd only been at Iowa a year or 2. The public only came to know her in her junior and senior seasons.

Watching great players develop for 3 or 4 years doesn't happen in the men's game, but it surely does in the women's game. Right or wrong, I don't know. But there are more young women playing basketball that are, or will be, household names than there are men.

Unrivaled has been all kinds of fun. Hard to imagine anybody beating the Lunar Owls. Phee is so damn good and on a mission. But it'll be fun. Rose might have a shot because of Chelsea Gray. I've hated everything the Aces have done this off-season, but if they have A'ja and a pissed off, healthy Chelsea Gray, they can beat anybody

@SFBayDuck Deja wanting a crack at the Heels. She's absolutely ballin'.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Heels are going to get there. Vegas agrees with all the rightly pissed off Mountaineer fans. 6-seed WVU is a 1.5 favorite over the #3 Heels in Chapel Hill. WVU is really good and pissed off. We'll see how it goes tomorrow night.

I was really pumped to see the Michigan kids against Notre Dame, but so far Michigan's lack of size and experience is just going to be too much to overcome. I could see Olivia and Syla settling in and making a run in the 2nd half, but it looks like ND is going to roll.

Ashlon. Ms. Jackson if you're nasty.

I hate how much I love what Duke and Kara have cooking. If there's a next great college coach, it's Kara Lawson, imo.

Of all the great young upcoming stars, Oluchi and Toby are going to be right up there.

They aren't going to be able to compete with South Carolina this year in the Elite 8, if it comes to that, but Kara has this program rolling.

Kentucky-K-State could be a banger. Ayoka Lee is back, so KSU is way under-seeded.

Wife went to VT, so I should be irritated about Georgia, Strack and Kenny scooting to Kentucky. But as a fan, I just don't want to see Georgia's college career end.

This might be a hot take, and certainly no disrespect to Paige, but if Georgia was 3-4" taller, she might be the #1 pick in the draft. There's only one Caitlin, but Georgia is about as good a pure point guard as you could imagine in most years.

Some teams with some tough decisions with Georgia and Haley. Damn good players, but what do you do with them at 5'6" (generously) at the next level.

Yeah, Michigan’s young’uns playing OK, but ND is a much better team.

Finally got a game with FSU and LSU. ACC fans know what a stud Ta'Niya Latson is.

Really worried the Mountaineers are about to curbstomp my Heels. Vegas agrees. It's not often you see a 6-seed as a 1.5 point favorite on a 3-seed's home court.
