Just got back from our 24 guy annual boondoggle in La Quinta. Get there on Tuesday after Memorial Day, played Wednesday through Saturday. First and last rounds are tournament. Skins, CTP's, LD, and Low Gross/Low Net. Middle 2 days are Ryder Cup format. 2 man scramble, 2 man modified alt shot, Singles. We have the draft in March and there's a lot of trash talk leading up to it. Played Indian Wells (Celebrity), Desert Willow 36, PGA West Stadium and Escena. Stayed at the Chateau at Lake La Quinta (awesome, 24 rooms, we take over the whole place for a week. Great food (steak and lobster champions dinner, unreal Mexican buffet, Tomahawks, etc. Everybody thought one team (ours) was gonna win in a landslide. We got boatraced 14 1/2 - 9 1/2. Shows you never know. I won 2 of my 3 matches including beating the guy who dominates every year in Singles for the first time ever. He's scratch. I'm currently an 8 but have been as low as a 5.7. I've beaten him a few times in Low Gross but that was a long time ago. Never beaten him in Singles. Best I could do was to take him to 16 and 17 before losing. They were contemplating making him play from the back tees to make it more equitable, but I said no. Never trailed. Played great golf and won 3&1 closing him out on the island green at Stadium. Had a bad warm up session while he was just lacing every club in the bag next to me so super proud that I blocked everything out and just played my game. Didn't play the 18th hole but was tracking to 76 or 77. Not bad with all the trouble on Stadium. Shot 80-79 in my 2 tourney rounds. Scratch guy won Low Gross (74-77) and I tied for Low Net. Won 15 skins on the last day and had a CTP so won some cash. Overall, I was very consistent so happy with the preparation going into it. Would have shot 3-4 shots lower each round but man I could not adjust for the slow greens for the life of me. So pissed about that. Left downhill putts short. It's a problem when our club is lightening fast and these greens in Palm Springs makes it feel the ball has brakes on it. No excuses next year - have to make that adjustment right away.
Overall, a great trip. We have a poker tourney, guys that are in a band played the final night, tons of libations and cigars. Male bonding at it's finest. Great conversations and belly laughs galore. Nothing better. 30th official year with this format of 24 guys.
