Guys, need some quick pointers to break me out of another funk with my driver. Disclaimer : I'm a 30 handicap so just looking for a couple things to focus on this weekend as everything hooks right.

I used to stick with a strong grip but after a lesson in the Spring I was told to go to a neutral grip and work through the issues. Well....in the limited times I've played it hasn't happened.

So at range tonight I started going back to strong grip, back elbow in. Tee just inside front foot, still can't hit with any consistency.

Any advice to keep in mind this weekend?  How close do I want to be to tee? Far or closer so backswing is more vertical?

Golf.....ugh!
Stop hitting Driver. No schtick

Stick with your 3 wood for now

Shot a 76 today after breaking 80 two others times this past week.

Credit goes to keeping hands in front of the ball at impact. Getting the ball much cleaner and as long as I'm getting my weight shift forward I get the ball and then the ground. Handicap will dive into single digits again after this month. Confident I can keep it there now.

Will depend on what you're wanting to do long term. If you want to improve a lot I strongly advise keeping a more neutral grip and find the real issue.

I was a major slicer once upon a time. I still fade the ball a bit more often than not, but I'm hitting it a lot straighter. FOR ME, it started with not swaying back during the back swing. I sort of post up on my right leg. Not quite locking up my right knee, but close to that. I focus on bringing the left shoulder down under the chin and the right shoulder back behind while getting a full turn. A full turn makes it a lot easier to attack the ball from the inside (right elbow in tight as you're bringing the club back down). This helps me keep the ball straighter. Power for me comes from firing my right hip out through the ball at impact. Takes a lot of practice and patience if you want to figure out the sequences required if you really want to bomb it. When I hit it well I don't have a problem getting it between 280 to 300. Buddy I play with most calls me "warning track power".

@GoBirds Go to Golfsmith, etc and get measured off the machine using different drivers.  You'll see some have higher ball flight, some have higher spin rates, some have higher ball speed, etc.  You can tell pretty clearly which one you hit the way you want to hit.

The TM M2 is getting good reviews for a 'game improvement' type driver.

looking for driver recommendations.  I started golfing roughly two years ago and have been terrible (nearly unplayable) for the majority of that time.  driver, pw and 9i were the only clubs I could even get off the ground.  this year I decided to take lessons and I'm actually starting to feel like I can finally play this game.  even my 3i gets up in the air rather consistently.

so, my thing is, I've been using an 11.5 loft used driver I bought for $20 from GolfSmith.  I've gotten to the point where I can pretty consistently hit it 200-225 and pretty straight, but I'm having trouble carrying much more distance than that.  is it as simple as going down in loft?  will an expensive driver help me get more yardage?  does the club have anything to do with it?  what should I be looking for?
Go get fitted.  That will tell you what the issue is.  Golf Galaxy will do it for $50 and you don't have to buy anything.  They will measure your launch angle, speed, smash and distance as well as tracking your miss tendencies with you present driver.  Then you will try out new drivers and narrow down.  Go in with no bias and tell them your budget.  You will quickly find the answers to your questions.

I was a devoted Titleist guy, but had become inconsistent with my driver - my bad miss was a big hook.  Went in for a fitting and sure enough, my old Titleist driver was wildly inconsistent in both accuracy and distance.  I demo'd Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, Taylor Made and Ping drivers before narrowing it down to Taylor Mades and Pings.  Then I narrowed it down by models in those two brands.  Turns out I was much more consistent in accuracy and distance with the Ping with no left miss and walked out with a Ping LS Tec, which is low spin version of the G30.  Took about an hour and was a lot of fun.  Since taking it out on the course, I have been driving it great.

Played Erin Hills last week and kicked it's ####. It will be interesting to see how the logistics work for the 2017 US Open as there is no place close to stay, everyone will be bussed in, locals will get free Uber rides in and out of the area. Our caddy said there are tees that they don't show on the yardage guide that are hidden in the fescue  and the course could play as long as 8k yds. The greens are pretty straight forward, what you see is what you get. There are steep, closely mown drop offs seemingly around every green that cause balls to fall into hazards or roll quite far away from the target. There is a nice mix of long and short holes that the USGA should have plenty of options when setting up to give a different look and feel for the players every day. The price is steep $265 plus $55 + $55 min tip for a caddy (highly recommended). I was told they are basically sold out for the rest of the season with 20 tee times available until the end of September. They won't be taking tee times until after the US Open in 2017.

got to play Spyglass Hill last Sunday, followed by Olympic Lake on Monday. maybe the best two courses i've ever played, and certainly two of the hardest. highlights:

- stepped up to the first tee at SH, warmup was about 10 balls on the range and three minutes of putting, and smoked one right down the pipe. then proceeded to hack/slash my way to the bottom of the hill, blading a GW to the back of the green from 110, and then putting it off the green into a bunker. easy 8.

- the two guys we got paired with were using a caddie (i'd never played w/ one before) and it was a cool experience. this guy knew the course backward and forward, and his knowledge of distances and reading greens was unreal.

- shot a smooth 50 on the front nine, so decided to have a couple of pops on the back to loosen up. went over to the beverage hut and ordered a double Jameson on the rocks. "That'll be $34." :( . then proceeded to hit the next three fairways and make my first par.

- partner teed off on #13, and hit's down the left side toward a group of deer. we get to his ball, and it's resting underneath an 8 point buck, right next to mama deer and three little fawns. my buddy: "I'm gonna just take a drop, ok? Really don't feel like getting gored going after that ProV1."

- i hit into a bunker on #17 which stuck under the lip of the back of the trap, on a downslope. the caddie says, "I've been doing this for six years here, that's the worst break I've seen."

SH is really impressive. the course is in excellent shape, greens are firm but fair, lots of elevation change, bunkers have "real" sand, and holes are memorable. this would be a cool course to watch some of the Pro-Am, and not have to deal with the masses at PB.

feel like i played better at Olympic: better contact with the driver and stopped blading scoring clubs, but only scored two shots lower.  hitting into six greenside bunkers didn't help, and had 4 three-putts...just couldn't get the feel for these greens. one thing i did notice about both tracks: SO many un-fixed pitch marks. wtf? i mean, i expect this at the local muni, but just not at courses of this caliber. [rant] come on people, it takes two seconds to bend down and fix your ball mark. [/rant]

Drink and stop caring.

Seriously.  It's got me back into almost single digits from the 20 I was six months ago.

The state of my game is so good and so sad right now.  Back in January my handicap ballooned to a 20.  Was a total mental midget.  Just panicked every time I got to a tee and had a myriad of terrible swing thoughts.

Six months later I'm now back down to an 11.  Shot a 74 with three penalty strokes a few weeks ago.  Two weeks ago I played in a four day tournament and was leading after three rounds with a net -2.  This past Sunday I shot an easy 80 and hit like 12 greens but didn't make any long putts.

The secret?  Alcohol.  It's pretty ####### pathetic.  Using that tournament for example, I drank freely the first three days and played great in tough conditions (83, 84, 87 which actually gross beat out a 2 handicap because the wind and heat was pretty intense).  Day 4 I'm in the lead but am the guy driving home so I don't want to drink.  Proceed to record an 8 on hole two (got lost in the pot bunkers at Royal Links) and a triple on holes six and seven by shanking balls off the tee.  Shoot a 51 on the front and I'm all but out of it.  I text my teammate (we were also leading the team standings going into day 4) who agrees to drive.  I down a half a flask of whisky and a few beers and come in with a 38.

I've learned that, instead of range time and putting greens, I need about 3-4 shots of whisky before teeing off and 2 beers per side to keep the buzz going I'll play like a 5 and hit my irons longer than about anybody.  Take all swing thoughts out of play except for, "swing hard."

I shot an 84 on Saturday (42/42), my best ever by 4 strokes. That was after opening with a triple and starting the back 9 with two doubles. Outside of those holes, it was very weird and very awesome just hitting consistently solid shots. No three putts was another great accomplishment for me.

Those of you who are Nike equipment guys (I hope not many)...you'll need to find another brand.  And those of you who are young up-and-coming pros....say goodbye to the big equipment deals.

BREAKING: Nike announces it is ending its golf equipment business. No more clubs, balls or bags. Business just way to challenging.

gonna be interesting to see who Rory switches to. guessing TM > Titleist?

I used to have the same problem. Bought a Nike Sweet 16 (16°) and was the same as you..200 or so yds and straight. Learned some things about the swing over the yrs and switched to 9.5° stiff shaft 6 or 7 yrs ago.

As far as expensive clubs helping? Idk.

The guy that hits driver farther than anyone else I play with hits a 10 yr knock off

A guy in my league is a -1 handicap for 9 holes and is the best putter I have ever played with.  Bought his putter at a garage sale 20 years ago for 3 bucks and uses a taped grip. Uses old RAM irons from the mid 90s.

I hit my driver way too high. Cobra AMP. But when I took it in and tested it against other newer drivers the launch and spin numbers were very similar. I guess I'm just swinging up too much?

Swing speed around 110. I carry the ball pretty far (275-280) but get almost no roll unless it's a hard fairway or downhill. And because it's so high it is greatly impacted by the wind (especially into - I have buddies that will outdrive me by 20 yds into the wind who I normally out drive by 20 yds).

Do you remember your launch and spin numbers? Do you tend to get too inside/underneath? In my experience, low handicapper high launch is often the result of being a bit open at impact due to coming in underneath the plane. I struggle with that and one way I've found to offset without making it a huge project is a bit more forward press and hands a touch higher at address. If that's not it, I'm not sure. But from what I've seen, adding loft is more commonly the cause than hitting up on the ball too much.

F Nike. Getting into the club and ball markets was a bad idea in the first place. Certainly didn't help that Tiger quite publicly had to be dragged kicking and screaming into his changes.

a less aggressive version of this for me is to simply forget all swing thoughts and have a clear head when I'm about to hit a ball.  especially when playing a round of actual golf, I try to let the muscle memory I've developed on the range do its thing.  now, when I'm on the range I'll still work on things, but only 1 or 2 thoughts at a time.  and then toward the end of the session I'll clear my head and just swing.  I saw a drill recently where a coach would have his student tee up 5 balls in a row and hit them in succession.  works on tapping into muscle memory rather than having a ton of thoughts before every swing.  eventually, I think, you want to be to the point where you do everything naturally.  if you still need to think "keep left arm straight" when you're about to tee off on 18, something is not right.

the alcohol is likely helping you do this.  you've been playing long enough that you've probably ingrained a lot of good habits in your default swing.  just need to let your body do its thing and not think about it too much.

Yeah I have a tendency to get 'tall' at impact and fire my right hand too early (flipping at it/adding loft). I've eliminated this from my irons entirely because I think about releasing the club into the ground in front of the ball (divot) but probably hang back a bit with my driver and reverse pivot/flip.

I imagine there is going to be a fight between the footwear brands and the golf brands now, over what brand of apparel and shoes golfers wear.

Rory is still valuable to Nike, but if he switches to Callaway...there sure as hell won't pay him anything just to use their clubs without any branding.  Is a golf bag enough?

it will be interesting to see what Rory does, specifically, since he's Nike's brand ambassador. curious if his endorsement deal includes a clause where he still wears Nike gear, but is allowed to play another brand (which i'm sure will pay him well, and demand that their brand is visible).

i think the days of head-to-toe branded guys are coming to an end.

I would imagine it will be package deal where it is the bag and hat for the clubs.  Nike might just have to give up the hat or allow a side logo.

This makes a lot of sense.  It's also why I can play pretty well when I'm playing by myself and playing very quickly.

I'm going to be in Dallas in a month. Any recommendations on courses?
Although I've never played it, I've heard good things about Cowboys Golf Club. It's expensive but it includes food so if you play in the morning you can get breakfast and lunch at the clubhouse.

I typically play the local municipal golf courses, nothing fancy except when one of my friends invites me to hack up his country club.

Thanks. We were looking at that one. It looked pretty good but it's good to have a recommendation.

Alright, hybrid talk. I've resisted but I'm getting to the point where I can't hit my 3 iron anymore solidly. I've lost my pride and am willing to grab a hybrid.

I'm a high single digit handicapper with a swing speed driver around 110-113. Hit my 5 iron 200, 4 iron 215, 3 wood 250. Many courses have par 5s just over 500 yds where I'm left with 220-240 and I can't get there.

I heard Nike is powering down their club business. Any experience with the vapor flex?

I love my hybrids.

I dropped my 3 and 4 iron and my 5 wood for a

3 and 4 hybrid. I now have a gap at 190 to 200 ish but it's better than a gap down in my wedges

Interesting rules situation today during the first round of our club championship.  Guy in my group blasts his first ball into the woods left.  He says he will play a provisional, which he hits weakly out to the right.  We look for the ball for a couple of minutes, and he says, ok, I guess it's gone, I'll go play my second ball.  We all start to walk to our balls, but as he is heading across the fairway, he finds his first ball in the right rough.  He proceeds to play that ball through the hole.  Later in the round he says, I think I did something illegal, was I allowed to play the first ball after I called off the search for it?  I didn't know the rule, we asked the pro who said no penalty, but some of the other members vehemently disagree.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure. A player cannot declare his ball lost by saying it's lost. Basically if you don't wait the full 5 minutes you don't say it's lost.  Now if he hit the provisional again before his ball was found then the provisional is in olay.

Also. You can actually hit a provisional more than once before it's in play.

See lost ball rule

I.e. you hit a drive 300 yards into woods.

Provisional you play safe hit and iron. You have up until you get close to the are of the original ball before the provisional cones into play

Btw shot the worst 76 ever today lol.

I hit some absolutely horrid shots but would bounce back.

And in the last month I have added distance somehow. I am murdering it:)

So you think the pro was right so long as the first ball was found within the first five minutes?

Ball Declared Lost Is Found Before Another Ball Put into Play

Q.A player searched for his ball for two minutes, declared it lost and started back to play another ball at the spot from which the original ball was played. Before he put another ball into play, his original ball was found within the five-minute period allowed for search. What is the ruling?

A.A player cannot render a ball lost by a declaration - see Definition of "Lost Ball." The original ball remained in play - see Definition of "Ball in Play."

27-2b/2

When Provisional Ball Holed Becomes Ball in Play

Q.At a short hole, A's tee shot may be out of bounds or lost, so he plays a provisional ball, which he holes. A does not wish to look for his original ball. B, A's opponent or a fellow-competitor, goes to look for the original ball. When does the provisional ball become the ball in play?

A.In equity (Rule 1-4) the provisional ball becomes the ball in play as soon as A picks it out of the hole, provided his original ball has not already been found in bounds within five minutes of B starting to search for it.

27-2b/3

Original Ball Is Beyond Provisional Ball; Player Searches Briefly for Original Ball, Plays Provisional Ball and Then Finds Original Ball

Q.A player's provisional ball comes to rest short of where the original ball is likely to be. After a two-minute search for the original ball, the player goes back, plays a second stroke with the provisional ball and then his original ball is found within the five-minute time limit. What is the ruling?

A.The player must continue play with the original ball. Play of a provisional ball does not render the original ball lost until it has been played from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place (Rule 27-2b).

27-2b/4

Provisional Ball Played from Beyond Where Original Ball Likely to Be But Not Beyond Where Original Ball Found

Q.A player, believing his tee shot might be lost or in a road defined as out of bounds, played a provisional ball. He searched for his original ball but did not find it. He went forward and played his provisional ball. Then he went farther forward and found his original ball in bounds. The original ball must have bounced down the road and then come back into bounds, because it was found much farther from the tee than anticipated. Was the original ball still the ball in play?

A.No. The player played a stroke with the provisional ball from a point nearer the hole than the place where the original ball was likely to be. When he did so, the provisional ball became the ball in play and the original ball was lost (Rule 27-2b).

The place where the original ball in fact lay was irrelevant.

Shot a 75 yesterday  :hifive:

Biggest difference this year is putting. I have almost 100% confidence I'm going to make anything under 6 feet. It's amazing how much pressure that takes off the rest of your game, which or course improves it.

what a great day....i've been hacking it around all year...day 1 of an improve your score tournament....

39/47 with just one double and one triple...63 net

tomorrow i'm looking to find some pars and get rid of that 6 and 7....

made up 7 strokes....made 4 on the both the 6 and 7 from yesterday....net 56...

have an all day lesson tomorrow....pretty f'n excited....

After a summer of shooting in the 80's and seeing my handicap go from 4 to 7.3 today I shot 71, with a double on 17. Wtf? Where was this game the last two months? Seriously.

I played on Friday.  Only the third round I've played this summer.  Had 11 GIRs which is a record for me but I shot 89.  A ton of 3-putts mostly due to bad putting but the greens had just been aerated and were top dressed.  Should have been around 80 with 11 GIRs.

i can't imagine only playing 3 rounds....

we enforce the "2 Putt max"  rule after aeration.    speeds up play and you don't get frustrated missing 3 footers that bounce left and right

15-year-old I play with every weekend (son of good friend) just shot a -4 32 during his High School practice...also had his first Hole in One.

I'm getting strokes next time out.
