Shot 5 under my cap on the last of a three day tournament today to pull us (two man tourney) up to 5th net. Great feeling to post best ever score on my home course during a tournament. Chipped in on 18 to cap it off.

Speaking of tourneys... Anyone have experience with guys having + handicaps getting to play as scratch golfers? Seems completely unfair. We had two guys that were +2.1 and +3.1 get to play as scratch golfers today. They both shoot a 71, but the score goes in as 2 under for their combined score winning them 1st net. Two even better players won 1st gross. Wouldn't it be fair for them to have their 5 strokes added if they're going to be in the running for net $?
Whoever was running the tournament screwed that up badly.

Thanks for input on handicapping issue. It was screwed up, but its being dealt with in a professional manner moving forward. My guess is it doesn't happen again. Club pro at the course doesn't want to deal with the level of crap he's taking over this scenario.

"Plus" players should be giving the appropriate strokes back to the field. We used to have a pretty good Ryder Cup $$ calcutta tourney that drew some tour pro's and they were given handicaps as high as +9.

@Woz I'll be headed your way in couple weeks for a marathon golf/drunk/gambling tournament @ Laughlin Ranch :excited:
Nice! Which tournament? May be able to join you.

Watching ncaa championship  Oregon kid wins it on 3rd playoff hole.

Go down for interview, the woman has the wrong golfer :lmao:

Good for Oregon & Casey Martin. Tough to win an NCAA championship but the odds are definitely in your favor playing on your home course. Need to go neutral site IMO.

Also helps to start with a 1-0 lead and not having to play the other team's #1, who just so happens to be the best player in collegiate golf. Still a huge accomplishment and happy for them. I like Eugene and have had some good times at that school. PNW takes down women's and men's titles.

Went to Cabo last week on vacation and played every day - 6 rounds. Down to 18.5 index, lowest it's ever been.

Sunday (Cabo Real), white tees 5711 yards, 68.2/115: 48/51 with 41 putts. Nothing good to say about this round. I couldn't putt and struggled with ball striking all day.

Monday (Cabo Real), white tees: 42/43 with 36 putts and a legit shot to break 80 until I choked on 17/18. On the back 9 through the first 7 holes, I was even par with two birdies, two bogeys, and three pars. Hadn't lost a ball or put it in the sand all day. I knew if I could go par/bogey I could hit 79. I got nervous and despite my efforts to calm down, I left my tee shot on 17 out to the right just enough to hit the cart path and end up in the desert. Hit two more bad shots before finally getting on the green and making a two-putt 7. It was worse on 18, putting a ball in the water and taking two shots to get out of a greenside bunker and finishing with an 8. +7 on the front 9, +7 on 17/18. Other than the last two holes, I was hitting the ball really well and had a lot of confidence.

Tuesday (Puerto Los Cabos), silver tees 6321 yards, 70.9/131: 48/55 with 40 putts. Front 9 not so bad, back 9 was ugly. It's a beautiful course and I like to play there when we're in Cabo but it's a tough one. Last year I shot 95 and I expected to do better this year but had a rough day.

Wednesday (Cabo Real), blue tees 6151 yards, 69.7/119: 51/47 with 39 putts. Got paired with a walk-on and he wanted to play the blues and I didn't mind. Didn't score much differently than the Sunday round since it was only 400 yards more. Still couldn't putt (common theme last week).

Thursday (Cabo Real), white tees: 46/46 with 36 putts. I didn't hit a fairway off the tee until #17 but scrambled a lot better and put together a reasonable score (for me).

Friday (Cabo Real), black tees 6848 yards, 72.9/127: 48/51 with 38 putts. First time ever playing from the tips. I figured I was on vacation, course wasn't crowded, and I wanted to see how I would do. I was most worried about some of the forced carries off the tee but I cleared all of them. 220+ par-3s are the suck and there were a few par-4s that I couldn't reach in two, but I don't hit a lot of GIR anyway so I hoped I wouldn't score too much worse. I'm certainly not good enough to play back there all the time but it wasn't terrible. It helped that the fairways were somewhat wide relative to the courses where I normally play.

My short game needs work, particularly my putting. Right now I'm happy with <36 putts and trying to keep 3-putts down but to have 2/6 rounds with 40+ putts isn't going to work if I'm not hitting a lot of greens.

6.6.16

Out - 46
In - 43

5 GIR, 6 fairways hit, 32 putts.

front nine pretty boring: 8 over through five, and then one over over the last four holes (missed two birdie putts inside 12'). back nine was much better - 4 over between 10 and 17 - and then a meltdown on 18 with a ball OB and a nice, easy triple bogey to wrap the round up. for not having played in a couple of weeks, it was a decent round. was very happy to hit 6/14 fairways considering how bad my accuracy has been off the tee recently.

Second lesson yesterday.

First lesson helped a lot - over the years I had gotten so upright that I was fighting to get the club back to the same spot consistently.  Had me make sure and tilt my hips up so they are angled more downward toward the ball.

Yesterday - simple as getting through the ball better, finishing with the belt buckle at the target.  Big thing was getting closer to the ball.  Pretty excited about how I hit it.  Easy 15 yds+ on my irons.

This could get me back on track.   :)

Argh!

Front 40, back 52.  7/9 GIR on the front, 2/9 on the back.

Tied my best 9 holes ever on the front which included two 3-putt bogeys and a few missed putts inside 15 feet. I picked up a new putter last weekend and haven't had much chance to practice with it. I feel much more confident on the 4-5 footers with it.

Wasn't doing too bad on the back until #15 when I put two OB off the tee. I'm about 50% with my driver but I keep practicing with it. I could have scored better by hitting 3-wood but it's all just practice anyway since I'm not playing for money.

I've got a 3-day clinic coming up next weekend that I'm really looking forward to. I've been reading on a golf forum from others who have gone and everybody loved it. I'm sure the pro will take one look at my setup/swing and be able to adjust 4-5 things that will help me be more consistent.

Will be heading to Minneapolis , best course to play ?
Where will you be staying?  Price point?  Will you have your own car?

For a muni, try Theo Wirth. Tough layout, oldest course west of Mississippi. Not wonderfully manicured but it's a good value.

The best courses in the area are all private, so that sucks.   However, last time I was in Minneapolis we played the Meadows at Mystic Lake Casino.  Very nice golf course.  Was about $100 to play, but the course was immaculate.

Yeah there are great courses but they are about 15-30 miles outside the city.

Wanted to respond to the DJ penalty situation at the US Open in this thread to hear the thoughts from the more serious golfers. Was there any possibility that they weren't going to assess the stroke based on something that DJ said after the round?

If no, WTF? Why wait until after the round? If yes, what could he have possibly said?

Also wanted to update on another subject. I played in a tourney earlier this year where + handicaps were allowed to play as scratch golfers. I contacted every course (via email) within a 50 mile radius of my home course asking them the following questions.

1. Do you allow players that have + handicaps to play in your tournaments as a 0?

2. What do you tell players that don't keep an accurate index? Do you allow them to play as a 0? Do you allow them to be eligible to win net money?

Ten of the twelve courses don't allow this to happen and players that don't keep an accurate handicap aren't eligible for net money. Both of the courses that allow + handicaps pay a larger percentage of their winnings to gross scores so that the + handicaps are far less likely to be winning net money, but they admit it does happen from time to time. My home course is one of them, but enough people have complained so they're coming up with a plan to prevent it. Head pro is considering some new rules. I'm confident they will do the right thing.

At my big $$$ tourney, + gets their actual number--not 0.  There's usually only a couple of guys with a + index and it's usually around +1 or so so it's really not that big of a deal.  You play with 70% of your index so the high handicappers (me) are hurt but you also play in flights divided by handicap so it's not too bad.  The top team in every flight advances.

It's a member guest so the real issue is guests bringing in inflated indexes. Happens every year at ours and probably at every member guest around.  IMO it should reflect on the member but not so much at ours.

I think the rule is that the decision is not made until after reviewing video with the player post-round. Period. That rule needs to change. And I think some of that is about giving the player the opportunity to called the penalty on himself after seeing all the evidence. It is stupid. There is no way they should not be able to make a ruling on the fly like any other ruling. If he disputes it, somebody pull out an iPad and go over it with him the same way you would in the trailer after the round. They can't let that kind of embarrassment happen again. But, being the USGA, surely they will.

Anybody allowing a + to play as a 0 is an idiot and should not be running events. The obvious exception being where the player has a plus index, but his course handicap is 0, which certainly happens on more difficult courses playing the course stretched out.

Mygolfspy came out with their driver testing results. The TaylorMades did well, specifically the M1. They have a table where you can separate the results by swing speed (high or low).

I got to participate in the testing (under 100 swing speed). We hit 15 shots with each driver. It was pretty interesting to get the instant feedback after each shot. I hit the M1 and F6+ well, but my best results were with the Mizuno JPX.

Not sure if this is the first golf cornhole on the board, but played an enjoyable 18 holes with dark matter this past Tuesday in 120 heat.

Hope that extra 18 didn't burn you out for day three of your tournament!

You go to some golf boards, and they love to put down TM and give the credit for their success to its marketing. I don't get it.  I'm on my 3rd TM now (M1), and I've been fitted every time...it's the best driver I've ever hit.

Played the second best round of my life yesterday.  Didn't even expect to play, was running on like 3 hours of sleep, and simply didn't care.  Shot a 74 with three penalty strokes (one ob off the tee and an unplayable).  I'm currently a 14.  Everything just clicked.

This game is way more fun when you play well.

Finally got out to Streamsong yesterday.  Loved it.  Pretty long, nice wide landing areas off the tee, greens rolling about 10 and severely undulated.  Had two 4-putts in 3 holes...I haven't had one in years.  Couldn't see any of the hotel but the clubhouse and the rooms above it looked really cool.

And they're building a 3rd course....7500 yard par 73 with 5 par 5s.  It's massive.  It talkers up almost the same area the other two do combined.

Played only 7 times this year.  My Index is up to a 7.4 :(

hit the ball well for the most part but when it goes south it goes south quick.

Played a private course last week and hit the ball like ####.  If I didn't putt lights out it would have been ugly.

I somehow scrambled to a 82 but that was all putting

Anyone want to recommend a range finder they really like and trust?
I bought a Garmin G6 couple years ago.  No complaints, free course updates and every course I have played it has been loaded.  Buy the older version for about $150 - $160.

I can put it in my pocket or I can put it in the golf cart cradle if I'm playing my home course.  I don't get too precise with it and move the pins on the green, but it tells me the distance to water, sand, and center of the green without any adjustments.  It will give you front, sides, and back of the green if you wanted to really break it down to the yard.

I think I want a laser one though, or at least one that's not dependent on the course being mapped or me figuring out how far away from the center the flag is.

I actually started out with a laser and sold it off for a GPS.  For me, I didn't like being Jack Sparrow on every shot just to get my measurement.  I'm more of a look at the screen get my distance to the center and take or add 5 yards if the pin is long or short, and maybe nothing after you factor the wind.  Unless your a scratch golfer I don't think you need to be that precise with the distance where it is +/- 4 yards.   :2cents:

I like the Garmin watches.  Works well enough for me and I don't have to carry anything. Bought the S3 a few years ago when it went on sale, now have the VivoActive HR.

Same here.

If you play in a cart, its no big deal to have the laser.

I play in a rural state, so many of the courses aren't going to be mapped.  Plus, this weekend I played a course where the greens were huge, so it's not a matter of +/- 4 yards, it's +/- 15.  I'd like some accuracy.

i wish mine had the little jolt thing....i end up shooting a tree directly behind the pin and amazingly the shot goes long...

Still use 100/150/200 plates. Have never owned a yardage gizmo.
A buddy of mine I play with on occasion has one of the laser ones. Very helpful. You can target bunkers off the tee, figure out how deep a dog leg is etc. I probably shave 2-3 strokes a round when I play with him.

i went the cheap route last year and picked up a NEO Ghost for $100.

does the job giving distances to Front, Middle, and Back of the green. another screen shows bunkers, water hazards, etc. i've compared the course markings (plates) to the Ghost and the yardages are +/1 one yard.

lightweight, small enough to clip on my bag w/ a carabiner, or put in my pocket. holds a good charge.

so far, i've only played one course that wasn't loaded into it.

Yeah, that's where I find them most useful. Hazards and dog legs. Not so much yardage to the flag.

My college son decided he wants to start playing so I've been taking him out lately.  I'm not very good (low 90's) and haven't played in 2+ years.  From what I can tell of his swing, he's got some good basics in that he hits the ball really really high with his irons and his woods.  The issue (beyond consistent solid contact) is that he hits his driver (an old Calloway Warbird) so high and to the right that he loses a ton of distance (he's teeing it up close to the ground).  Secondly, even though he hits his 5 iron as high as I hit my 9, he only hits it around 160.  He hits hard and it seems like it should go further.  Any basic swing advice for a free swinging, college tennis player?

He probably isn't transferring his weight to his front side and/or leaving the clubface open at impact.

I started with a watch, used it a few years, and have switched to a laser. It is just much more useful. I  play the same course 90% of the time and found that I was just about as accurate by guessing the distance as using my watch. In addition to some of the uses mentioned for the laser, I find it most beneficial between 50-100 yards, where a 5-10 yard difference is meaningful. A watch may give you 90 yards to a middle pin, but on a large green, that could be off by 10-15 yards, depending on the pin placement. Like someone else said, I'd bet it might be worth a couple of strokes a round. On an unfamiliar course, it would be huge.

I think this is the right answer in the event the golfer is good enough to have his yardages dialed in and may be looking for specific numbers to lay up to or hazards along the hole to avoid.

But for the amateur, just hit it to the middle of greens if at all possible.

Assuming he's right handed, have him work on staying upright through the swing and keeping his right elbow closer to his body.

He's hitting the common miss for baseball/tennis players.

Guys, need some quick pointers to break me out of another funk with my driver. Disclaimer : I'm a 30 handicap so just looking for a couple things to focus on this weekend as everything hooks right.

I used to stick with a strong grip but after a lesson in the Spring I was told to go to a neutral grip and work through the issues. Well....in the limited times I've played it hasn't happened.

So at range tonight I started going back to strong grip, back elbow in. Tee just inside front foot, still can't hit with any consistency.

Any advice to keep in mind this weekend?  How close do I want to be to tee? Far or closer so backswing is more vertical?

Golf.....ugh!

looking for driver recommendations.  I started golfing roughly two years ago and have been terrible (nearly unplayable) for the majority of that time.  driver, pw and 9i were the only clubs I could even get off the ground.  this year I decided to take lessons and I'm actually starting to feel like I can finally play this game.  even my 3i gets up in the air rather consistently.

so, my thing is, I've been using an 11.5 loft used driver I bought for $20 from GolfSmith.  I've gotten to the point where I can pretty consistently hit it 200-225 and pretty straight, but I'm having trouble carrying much more distance than that.  is it as simple as going down in loft?  will an expensive driver help me get more yardage?  does the club have anything to do with it?  what should I be looking for?
