What do you guys do when your wife gives you a hard time about playing?

Divorce her?
No shtick. This one of the contributing factors in why my marriage was quick.

I would get away to golf w friends. After like 6 holes, I'd start to get text messages and phone calls about where I am and how she needs help with the dogs at home and how much longer I'll be.

Nothing pissed me off more. A day on the course should be a day on the course.

I'm an excellent "bubba" golfer. That is when you hit a crappy shot and drop another ball and immediately hit it within 15 feet of the flag. Bubba shoots at pins.

I can't hear my phone ring or buzz when it is in my golf bag on the back of the cart. She needs to leave a message.

had a nice range session today. I have practiced once this year, this was the 2nd time. I have a scramble tourney Saturday and don't want to be a drag on our team. Main thing is, i can give you guys advice on certain swing things, but i also have to do those things and need the occaisional tune up just to remind myself what an effortless, powerful, balanced swing feels like.

so i hit like ten 9 irons, and they were'nt going very far or high, or straight. Then i remembered "straighten your back, don't slouch", that fixed my setup posture and position. Then I remembered "you only need to swing 3/4, and then compress it" so boom, 9 iron straight, high and far. I kept at it and swtiched back and forth between 7 iron, driver, SW, hybrid, 5 iron, all of them going a long ways and straight. Felt good to hit full distance shots with 80% effort and get the trajectory I want to see. Hope I can keep this for the rest of the summer.

We golf together. She's only slightly less addicted than I am.
I'm trying to teach my wife to golf. It could cause divorce.

Serious question: Did she know you golfed before you married her?
Neither of us golfed at all five years ago. I was a basketball player and coach. She played soccer. We both played a lot of co-ed softball together with our gang of friends.

She had each of her knees fall apart (both MCL and ACL surgeries) over a few years and determined that soccer wasn't an option any longer. Basketball was becoming too much for me physically (turning 46 this summer) so we just opted for golf. She initiated it. We took a lesson from a pro and bought clubs. Now our entire softball gang has turned to golf.

Added note: I play best when I play with just her and not my other male friends. Less pressure I guess. Shot an 80 last week on a par 71 course with her. Good times.

Curious to know how other guys track their swing thoughts.

I keep a running list in a notepad on my phone. I edit it most often after I play a good round. Things that just felt right and had good results. Right now my list looks something like this:

  • Left arm long and straight
  • Right elbow in tight
  • Flat left wrist
  • Don't kill it
  • Hit it smooth inside to out
  • Keep head on ball
  • Left shoulder rotates back, then weight forward and down into ball
Anyone else do something similar? I realize this is a long list, but it gives me something to fall back on when shots are all off-kilter.

I think you are in trouble if you get too technical with your swing thoughts. Larger, more broad swing thoughts can actually indirectly correct many of the more detailed items you listed.

for me it's:

*Keep the weight on the balls of my feet

*Take the club back slow and low

*Fire my hips and lower body at impact

*finish with hands high

i've got some notes on my phone:

Irons

- ball in middle of stance

- 80% swing max (i.e. not over-swinging)

- club hits ball first

- sweeping, not digging

- hands finish at the target

Driver

- weight on inside RH foot

- ball inside LH heel

- back low and slow

- watch club hit back of the ball

- release hands at impact

- head stays behind ball

agree with urbanhack: too many thoughts over the ball can be detrimental, so these notes are more reference if i start missing. when standing over the ball, it's more basic like "Watch the club hit the ball," "80% swing," "Good balance."

One thing I try to remember when I start overswinging is something my instructor says: "Let the club do the work". It's a reminder that I don't have to kill the ball, solid contact with an 80-90% swing will work just fine.

I've gotten to a point where I can't chip anymore. I know I'm totally in my own head now, but I can't fix it. I'll practice chipping and I'm fine. But as soon as I get out on the course, my chips are

terrible. I either hit it 2 foot or 40 yards. Chunk or blade. I shot a 101 this weekend with 3 pars and a birdie. If I can hit the green, no issues. If I just miss the green, 7's and 8's. I'm like Tiger

Woods out there chipping now.
Hold the club with the same grip as you hold your putter. Or, if that feels weird, don't interlock your fingers, point your right index finger down the grip (or left if you're a lefty) and put the ball further back in your stance. It'll feel weird, but it should help you stop hitting too far behind the ball and blading it.

Here's the thing: About 20 years ago, I was having a real tough time finding a putting grip that felt good. No matter how I tried to grip the putter, I felt like I was all over the place. I began trying very unconventional putting styles, nothing was too crazy. I eventually found one that felt wonderful: Left hand in the normal spot up top, but the right hand down the club, barely touching the grip. My friends called it the Happy Gilmore grip for putting. I look like I'm playing hockey.

All that said, when I get to those chips that are 10 to 20 yards off the green, I almost feeling like using that same grip. Hitting it hockey style like a saucer pass. I actually saw a guy on Big Break who did the same thing. I'm really thinking of practicing this, but I don't want to mess up my swing if I'm just going through a Tin Cup moment. I just don't know when the Tin Cup moment actually becomes a Chuck Knoblauch thing.

That's a pretty extreme grip, but I'd say give it a shot. Especially when you have a good lie.

Who has tips for breaking 80? I am right there consistently. 80-83 every time out now.

I had a +1 37 on my front 9 last time out, and was sure I had it. A couple bad breaks on the back 9 and a bogey bogey choke finish for a 44 left me at 81. I think it's a mental hurdle at this point. I knew right where I was and knew I had to par in to shoot the score I wanted.

Just trying to focus on every shot.

Do you track fairways, green, putts, sand saves etc? This would be where I'd start. Not knowing any of the above, there are 3 areas I'd look for. 1. Do you have OB/water/penalty strokes? If so routinely, play more conservative on those holes. 2. Wedges. Full, 3/4 and chipping. Spend >50% of your range time from 30-120 yds. Dial those in. 3. Lag putting. Do you three putt when you have a long lag putt?

Practice chipping and putting more to the point where you can get up and down from anywhere. Thats the most valuable place to target if your not there yet imo. I wish I had 30-120 in enough that it would make sense to focus on it. That is a range I very rarely find myself.

Mr. Roboto and AJ give sound advice. The one thing I would add is to not focus on your score as much as focusing on shots. In fact, try playing without adding your score until you've finished your round. Just play.

don't think about your score for all 18 holes. Just score each hole and move on.I did the break 80 mental hurdle, took me like 8 times shooting 80, then shot 76. My buddy kept score, and I had no idea what I was shooting other than I kept making pars. Its 100% mental

1. course management. avoid the penalty shots, know your ball flight so if you miss the green or fairway you aren't penalized. If the flag is on the left side of the green and there is a bunker on the left...aim for the middle-right part of the green.

2. no three putts

3. when in doubt, take a longer club, choke down and make a shorter swing.

I 3-putt way more often than I should. Probably one to two times per round. I'd say this is the biggest flaw in my game. Need to make more of those putts inside 10 feet too.

I have the GolfLogix app, which is great by the way for tracking stats and GPS, especially for free, to track my stats.

I'd say I have about one blow up hole per round where I hit one OB or go for a par 5 in two that I shouldn't. When I miss one it can go a long way the wrong way.

Part of the reason my scoring has improved lately is acknowledging these flaws though too. I've been more conservative lately on Par 5's because my irons are really dialed in, and I've been focusing much more on long putts than I did previously.

All good advice, guys, thanks.

My swing thoughts:

- don't slouch, be upright at address

- keep my left heel grounded

- tempo

- rotate

- stay behind the ball

If I do what that means to me, I usually hit the ball well.

Get someone else to keep score. If it is a mental issue then quit putting that distraction in your head so you can fully focus on each shot coming in. I try my best not to think about score and think about swing instead.

Started doing this last year and knocked a few strokes off. When I did not hit the green 90% of the time I was short. Now if I don`t catch it square I am getting to the green or at least the front fringe.

What do you do to find cheap deals on greens fees?

Been using GolfNow every now and then, but their fees are so outrageous that its almost the same cost as just showing up and paying the full freight. Also, you have to book a ton of rounds now to earn any special rewards. Their HotDeals can sometimes get you a free cart, but I walk all the time anyway.

Check out the Deal times at www.teeoff.com.

If you see anything you like, I can usually score a promo code to save an additional 25% off at checkout. PM me if you see anything.

Anyone been selected for tickets to Masters? Do you get email or physical letter notifying you? My brother received the rejection email today but I haven't seen anything yet, am I still in running?

Denied. Submitting for practice which if actually prefer.

while in the folder would like to say fellas, the white belts...wrong amount. Way wrong amount.

Never known anybody selected via the lottery but that is certainly a good sign. I got my rejection this am.

Just got back from myrtle. Played 2 really good rounds.

1 crappy. Could not putt for some reason.

Hurt my hand and couldn't hold a club with it the last.

I pretty much played 1 handed and shot a 104. I was pretty proud

I'm getting closer. Drove the ball well which is my #1 key. But my irons, I'm about 1 for 3 on avg. 2 out of 3 I'm getting too steep and I end up catching it heavy, toe goes into the ground you can see it in my divots. Putting is way off. My speed is good but I seem to have lost my laser accuracy with the putter. So for now, my only strengths are driving and chipping. I need to play, a lot. My big summer tourney is one month from now

Played yesterday and shot 48/49. It's amazing how much better I score when I hit the fairway:

8/18 hit fairway/green: +7 including a birdie. Also including a horrific triple-bogey when I chipped 3x to reach the green and then 3-putted.

10/18 missed fairway/green: +19

I did have 6 one-putts which is a huge improvement for me. My biggest opportunity for improvement is keeping the ball in play (lost 5 yesterday) and not 3-putting (5 of those).

Went out today with my wife and couple of friends to a short course - 6 par-3s and 3 par-4s. Despite only hitting one green, I was +3 after 8 holes before putting one in the lake and another OB off the #9 tee. I finally hit my 3rd shot off the tee down the fairway, put a wedge to 18" for a tap-in triple-bogey 7 to finish +6. On a positive note, I got up and down for par on the first four holes.

Headed to Cabo next week and have three rounds booked - one each at Puerto Los Cabos, Cabo Real, and Club Campestre San Jose.

got my latest NCGA revision today: 15.6. that's the lowest number i've held in probably 20 years, and down from 17.3 last year at this time. feeling pretty good about my game at this point.

Shot 82 on Friday with 4 penalty shots. Wedge play was subpar from 50 to 100.

But played with 3 great buddies, got pretty buzzed and had a blast.

That's what it's all about for me at least  I gotta actually get some buddies is all.
As much as I want to play well, I love hanging out, drinking, gambling and hitting clutch shots better than putting up a number.
Is fun. I play with my bro in law. He used to be an 18, now he's a 10. I'm a 5. He beats me when I have a bad day but even then, if I press and pay attention the last 2-3 holes I usually get the money back. I think it bugs him knowing that even on my worst days he can't completely beat me.

Now, I just need to practice and play a lot before July 16

Drop it another 4 pts by spending all your practice time on putting and chipping

Plus, its boring shooting even par. I had a round with 16 pars, one birdie, one bogey and I thought I'd die of boredom

Sounds awful.

Did anyone check out that show Altered Course on the Golf Channel? I watched the first episode but wasn't all that impressed. I may give it another shot to see if it gets better. Interesting concept.

sounds a bit like what we used to do at the club where I worked in high school. we just called it around the world. playing from one tee to four green, five tee to six green, etc. it was fun. Even did a glow ball like that. Same club Open qualifier Denny McCarthy is a member, where his father was club champion when I worked there.
