***Official 2025 Golf Thread, tbd*** (11 Viewers)

First time out this year and only 2nd time since November. 6500 yard tees. Was muddy so was cleaning ball and dropping which helped a ton...shot 91. Good score for me, missed a few easy putts but very few shanks and no lost balls. Hit driver really well.

Can't wait to play again.

headed to mesquite march 14-18, playing wolf creek, oasis canyon and coyote springs. working on a friday course closer to the strip, i freaken can not wait!

Just wanted to stop in and mention I had 39 putts today. 39. That's hard to do. Seven 3-putts paved the way. I should just stop playing.

Course is scheduled to open on Tuesday, assuming weather holds. Hit my first bucket of the year on Monday....not a disaster after not hitting a ball for nearly 2 months.

Golf goals for the year....

- Get under a 10 handicap and stay there (got down to a 9.7 last year. ended up at an 11.8 once the Fall hit and I was only able to play like once a week)

- Shoot even par for 9 holes (JUST missed it back in late November. Shot a 37 (+1) missing make-able birdie putts on the last 4 holes)

- Break 80 at least 3 times (did it one time last year, shot probably a dozen other rounds in the 81-83 range)

-Play at least 15 new courses (I tend to play nearly all my rounds at my home club and my dad's club. I think its hurting my game.   Planning to take full advantage of Open Rounds this year and play every place I can within driving distance)

- Win my club championship flight. I've won the last 2 years (stepped up a flight this past year) and would like to get up another flight this time. But considering that my flight from this past year had guys in the 8.5 Index range, that's PROBABLY not realistic. I dont think I'm getting down into the 7's this year.

- Win either the member-member (2 days)  or Club Cup championship (stretched out over the whole summer)  with my brother. Both are handicapped and we got to the finals of the Cup last year (losing to a net-eagle on the last hole).

Getting fitted for new irons and a driver in a few weeks once I get a few rounds/range sessions in. Hopefully I'll get a little extra driver distance and maybe a little extra iron forgiveness.

My game outside 100 yards is good enough to hit my goals. (I'm long enough and generally do enough to be around the green in regulation) Chipping is pretty good. My upside is wedge shots and getting rid of 3 putts.

Still nowhere near golf season here in the northeast.  However, a golf simulator "lounge" has just opened nearby.  Tried it once so far.  The chipping and putting aren't realistic, and since you pay by the hour, it's more fun to just have it auto-putt and move on.

Not sure how accurate the rest of it is.  I only played about 6 holes, but it sometimes seemed to think I was much shorter than I typically hit my clubs (e.g. registering 120 for a club I usually hit 160).

I'm a casual, infrequent player, struggle to break 100 (counting everything, no gimmes).  My short irons are solid, but I completely lost control of my 3-wood off the tee the second half of last summer, and I've never really been able to control a driver.  Would lessons at a golf simulator do me any good, or do I need a real range for lessons?

Presumably, right?

Yesterday at peak mid-afternoon sunshine it was 39, with the wind chill it felt like 31. Drove by the local muni & the parking lot was 2/3rds full. Went around the corner & saw groups on every visible hole. Ski jackets & parkas galore.

Tbf it was a cloudless day lol.

Oasis canyon? You mean Coral Canyon?

ETA: Never mind, I see you're referring to the Oasis Golf Club. I've actually never played that one but have viewed it and it looks nice.

Last week was my favorite member guest of the year and I yet again repeated the same pattern of playing really well day one (made four birdies and shot under my number) while fizzling out on day two. Even made sure to get the alcohol out of my system before bed and got good sleep before the second day. We were sitting 5th out of 108 teams after day one.

Day two started out with a sketchy bogey from 100 yards out in the middle of the fairway on a stroke hole, recovered nicely on the next hole with one of the best up and downs in my life, but my partner made a quad and the pressure got to me a bit (the second day the format takes a nine-hole score from each player so it was obvious this nine was mine) and I just started wasting a shot per hole. So frustrating.

Honestly I'm at a frustrating point with the game. My currently handicap is ~7 and with my work hours it's essentially impossible it seems for my game to improve too much. While I have controlled my variance quite a bit I feel hamstrung that it's near impossible for me to go on some ridiculous run like I could when I was a 10+ handicap (i.e. 95 was always in play but my odds of shooting 75 were not much less than they are now). Presently, I pretty much live in the 78-84 range which means I'm never out of it but it's really hard to win tournaments this way.

It's really, really nice but it is genuinely gimmicky. I wouldn't put it top 3. Honestly Conestoga is almost as nice and Sand Hollow and Coral Canyon are up there too for the area.
I understand it’s not for everyone. It’s in my personal top 3. There are a couple of holes that are gimmicky for sure. I’ve always been a sucker for super picturesque courses though, and haven’t played any of the others in the Mesquite area.

You definitely should. I've done several like 4-day guys' golf trips there. Wolf is probably the best solely for the views, but there's surprisingly very good golf in the area - especially if you're willing to drive the 45 mins to Coyote Springs (middle of nowhere course on way back to Vegas) or to the Hurricane Utah area courses (Sand Hollow, Coral Canyon, etc.).

I’m in the exact same boat. I’ve taken comfort in the fact that I very rarely blow up on a hole or a round. My misses are not big usually. I keep in play and am long enough off the tee. When I’m going lower in the 70’s it’s because 1) better iron play and more GIR 2) goes with #1, but the difference is usually how I do on par 3’s. They are tough at our course. 175 yard island green, another 170 ish shot uphill into a prevailing wind, etc. 3) up and downs if I miss the green 4) putting - always. 5) eliminating stupid mistakes. I had a bad round on Saturday and some of it was #5. Went for a par 5 in 2 and the only place you can’t miss is short left. Leaves you with a 25-30 yard bunker shot over another bunker to a tight pin. I went in and doubled a birdie hole. Dumb AF.

To your other point, it is tough for handicaps in our range to win tournaments. Nothing like a 16 shooting 78 to help you win. Need a partner who can play better than their handicap. Also, I know I can’t play well drinking hards on the course. A couple beers OK. But vodka will spiral the round. Tough as our member guest is a drink fest. Bars set up every 3 holes.

Im good for 1 or 2 90s a year now a days...... just lack of playing..... I'll usually know by the 4th hole :lmao:  because everything will just be "off"

Absolutely the same here, along with whether putts are rolling. My par 3 scoring is the worst (basically my stats show that I play them at 4 scoring average where my par 5 scoring is almost below par). I assume this is because iron play is the weakest part of my game.

I was lucky enough to be able to play Pebble and Spyglass last June and it looks like I will be returning this year for the same event. Can't wait. Now that I "know the course", I expect my 120+ to turn into 110+. LOL.

I also am lucky enough to be heading to St. Andrews for 2 rounds of golf in April (the Old Course and the Castle Course). Really looking forward to that. While I'm generally a hacker, I can still appreciate the beauty and history of being out there.

Speaking of top 3, I've been advised by one of my work partners that the bold should absolutely be one of the three courses I ensure I play before I die. He says the course itself > Augusta (though he puts the whole "Augusta experience" as the best).

Would love to. I need more/better golf friends! We were just in vegas and played Las Vegas golf club and Desert Pines 😑

I am in the market to buy a new set of clubs.  What do you guys recommend as the best clubs to buy?  Ping? Callway? Taylor Made?

I recommend getting fitted. I didn't expect to end up with Mizuno last year, but it was obvious when I tried three or four different sets.

Nice. I do Vegas plenty too! Lots of good golf there. Next time I strongly recommend: Paiute (all three courses), Bears Best, Revere (two courses); and Bali Hai (assuming you can't get on the private to crazy expensive courses).

You're going to hate this, but the correct answer is the club and shaft that best fits your swing and that is not going to be brand specific or even a particular model within a brand.

If you're new to the game get a player assist club (i.e. cavity backs) and spend a few minutes at a golf store figuring out your swing speed so you can find the shaft best suited for you.

The shaft is as important if not more important than the club itself.

I have played all of those except Revere. Also Wynn, Cascata etc. Just so much easier to center a trip there for those that the golf is more of an afterthought.

Nice. Wynn and Cascata are beautiful (though not certain they're worth the price tags).

If you can ever find a way on, Dragon Ridge is equally awesome.

I got fitted for my current Ping clubs 26 years ago.  I will for sure get fitted for the new set.  Guess I was hoping for more help on the brands available as I have been happy with the Ping set but didn't know what else was out there.

The main brands are still the main brands. And Ping are still really good clubs, especially their woods.

All the top brands (TM, Titleist, Ping, PXG, Mizuno, Cobra/Clevland, etc.) make high quality clubs as the technology has really ballooned to the extent it can with rules restrictions.

Really boils down to what fits best for you. And, I cannot stress this enough, that they are equipped with the best shaft for you.

Had a really great round for me today. A new personal-best (since taking the game back up again in the last handful of years) of 82 today. Missed a number of really makeable putts, so the 70s were definitely in play. Solid off the tee as usual, but my approach shots were much better. Had a number of high-quality shots there.

And I've been working on this mini flop shot around the green lately because I'm just terrible in close. But this new shot was really working for me today. Had a bunch of up-and-downs.

Shot of the day came on a par 3 surrounded by mounds and sand traps. I pulled my pitching wedge left, so I was off the green about 10 yards or so but I was down below with one of these big mounds and a trap in front of me and almost no green to work with. Absolutely nutted a flop shot that landed about three feet past the pin and spun back and just missed going in. I looked like a real golfer for that fleeting moment.

Just wanted to stop in and mention I had 39 putts today. 39. That's hard to do. Seven 3-putts paved the way. I should just stop playing.
This was me a few years ago.  I switched to a center-shaft putter (and started grinding on the practice green) and saw instant results.  I'm now averaging 30.14 putts.

I am in the market to buy a new set of clubs.  What do you guys recommend as the best clubs to buy?  Ping? Callway? Taylor Made?
I reiterate the fitting comment with one caveat - those guys are there to sell you clubs and make as much money as possible.  They are going to try to sell you the most recent most expensive set every time.

I always tell people - as amateurs, we do not have access to the time and club resources pros do.  Playing Titleist vs. Callaway vs. Mizuno is a functionally irrelevant decision.  We can't get precisely tuned and fit into the "perfect" club for us because we're not consistent enough for there to be one and we're not going to have a brand rep jumping whenever we snap our fingers looking for a different shaft.  If you're not spending 30-40 hours a week on your game you can't be.  We're far better off getting a set of clubs we feel great about and then hitting them - we'll adapt to the clubs way faster and easier than we have access to adapting the clubs to us.

The extension of this is that we're not good enough to take advantage of the micro-improvements they make year-over-year.  Pros want that extra .7% of control and distance and with unlimited funding and access sure, that's great, but amateurs can't really leverage that anyway so putting a ton of money into that doesn't make sense.  If you're overly wealthy I guess it's fine but that's not most of us.

What IS critical is getting the right model within whatever brand you choose.  If you're a 20 there are Mizuno's for you - just not the forged 220's.  A very close second is the shaft - this is the transmission of the swing so it's critical to get the right length and flex.  If your guy isn't talking mostly about the shaft walk away.

I go for two things:

1.  What is your brand loyalty?  Are you a snob like me that would never be caught dead playing X brand of clubs?  Do you absolutely have to have a Titleist logo?  Pick your brand first, you have to LOVE what you're hitting.  It's ok to narrow it down to a few options too but to me (I'm not actually a snob) this is just a cosmetic thing.  All major brands make fantastic quality clubs.

2.  How do they look when you're standing over them?  Some guys like a small thin profile, some need to see a big honkin' shovel knowing they can't miss with it.  How does the club fit your eye?  Grab a few options and stand over them.  If they "look ugly" cross them off the list.  Too much mental stuff goes into golf success, you can't start off with negative energy.

After that it's the fitter's job.  Get the shaft length, and flex the lie angle, the strike zone from them.  They will make sure you're not playing a club you can't handle while getting the right fit to your striking skill.

I'm considering new irons this year and likely to avoid cutting edge models so I can stay under $1k.  Mavrik, JPX921, something in that territory.

Love mine - especially the 4, 5, 6 hybrids. That was a good decision.
My buddy has some Hot Metal Pros.  Very solid club, likely in line with my skill set.  I borrowed the 5 and 8 irons and took them to the range and hit a couple buckets with them.  By the end of the session I was pretty pure but I did have to make an uncomfortable stance adjustment - something a fitter will cure quickly.  Highly likely this ends up being my choice.

Central Ohio hasn't opened up yet, still the last few inch remnants of snowdrift from plowing on the ground.  Can't really do much range work even - I've been to Top Golf once and did get two hours in on the local range on Wednesday evening with the weather in the high 50's.  As I drove off the property I passed 18 green and it had two spots of snow still on it about 10' diameter each.  Maybe only an inch deep but still, snow isn't a good sign.

I called my course (way farther south) Wednesday and they had not made a go/no-go decision for Saturday but he did ensure me of first-out status if they do open.  Forecast in the 60's but we've had a TON of snow and thus melt and with the frozen ground still there's just nowhere for the water to drain to.  I'm calling today to see what they say.  Likely won't be until 10:00 tee time and for sure cart path only (irrelevant to me as I'll walk) but I'll take anything at this point.

It seems so silly....but "looks ugly" can absolutely be a problem that never goes away with a certain club. I'm currently playing a set of Callaway XR Steelheads that I got in the Fall of 2016. It was my first time getting fitted and I was shooting like 105 at that point (I was just getting seriously into the game and playing with a 13 year old set of clubs wasn't ideal).

Anyways....we settle on the clubs, get the correct shaft (as correct as you can for how inconsistent I was at the time), set up the lie angle...etc.  I elected to go gap wedge--> 5 iron without actually hitting the gap wedge. Ever since the first time I stood over it....I HATED the way that gap wedge looked. There's absolutely no logic behind it (the difference between that club and the PW is obviously minimal) but it just inspires absolutely no confidence. To my eye, it looks like a Fischer Price club. Every once in a while I pull it out of the bag and try to make it work....but I just have no success.

Getting new clubs in a few weeks. Very much looking forward to a fitting knowing what I actually need to look for now. Probably gonna forgo the set gap wedge and test out a bunch of specialty wedges with different grinds. That club created a large hole in my game (both in terms of full shots and lower bump and run chips around the green) that I'm eager to fill.

edit: probably gonna get my first round of the year (or at the very least, 9 holes) in tomorrow. Our course opened up the back on 9 tuesday and the weather has been good since. Tomorrow is still gonna be cold but Sunday (while up in the 60's!!!!) has a very good chance of rain. So the goal is to get out around 11-12 and loop the back 9 twice. VERY excited to get going again. 2 months of no golf is rough.

Get the Kirkland wedge set at Costco. Highly rated and dirt cheap.

Played 9 holes today and hit the ball pretty decent for me but my putting was awful.  I had 4 three puts and 3 two puts through the first 7 holes.  Ended up with 2 one puts the last two holes to salvage a little.  Still, 20 puts through 9 holes was terrible.

we switched our wednesday round to sand hollow

I hit the greatest shot of my life yesterday.

A 510 yard hole, at about the 250 mark it starts undulating down hill. Piped my drive to top of the hill caught a nice lie on the down hill.

Then the shot…sitting about 225ish . Had to wait for the green to clear so all my buddies were now there. Was expecting the usually yank in this situation.

Hit my fairway wood pin high to about 8 feet. Since the hole is well below where I hit it from it hung for a long time, the slightest fade.

Missed the putt, left it short about one roll

At least you didn't 3 Jack for a par.... That's the worstest

back to back sundays of shooting an 81, although yesterday was 10 over on an easier course but really happy with where my game is. i’ve gone from looking at my score card and not trying to screw it up to believing i should be shooting that score or lower. missed a couple of shortish birdie putts over reading the break before the greens dried up and botched an easy wedge into 18 into a bunker and had to settle for a bogie. my goal is to play a round 5 over and i’m getting closer to that, a far cry from 3 months ago when i had a mental block on my swing and was shooting low 90’s. golf is a crazy game

A couple of 81s is "getting closer" to a 67??? I wish I had your optimism.

Bandon Trip Set...July.

Golf schedule is set so good there, couldn't stay on the grounds which stinks but we are nearby.

Who has the good tips?

1. Make sure to leave some time to play the punch bowl and do some friendly wagering (stymie maybe?).

2. I'm told if you can do a re-play that you need to plan ahead but it's a great bang for the buck.

3. Take in the scenery. Seriously. Take a moment on each course to soak in what you're doing.

4. When in doubt, putt.

5. Probably pertains to most courses, but ignore the flag and go middle of the green. Fairways are pretty wide so you should be thinking about what kind of second shot you want.

6. Listen to the caddies.

7. It's a lot of walking. Make sure you stay hydrated, maybe go double socks, etc.

Playing in a Stableford tournament this weekend. I played in this event before but was pretty inebriated and didn't give it much thought. So, while I still wound up cashing in my flight, I'm not certain I approached the format correctly. After giving it some thought, it seems like being ultra-aggressive is the play.

However, in contrast to that strategy, the course we are playing is not terribly challenging or lengthy so long as one keeps his ball in play. Usually when I play this course I go conservative off the tee (a lot of hybrids and 5 irons) and just simply play to avoid doubles or worse. As a ~seven handicap this usually keeps me in the 78-82 range (par 71) depending on whether I make some putts or hit some nice chips.  This usually makes for a relaxing day and keeps me in most cash or medal games, but am I correct in assuming I just need to put that thought process aside and attack?

Here's the scoring system (net):

Double or worse = 0 points

Bogey = 1 point

Par = 2

Birdie = 4

Eagle = 6

There's also some quota system for the second time. I'm not entirely sure how that works (something about adjusting up or down by 50%?) but I assume it doesn't change the strategy a ton. If I play well the first day I'll probably put in some time and effort figuring it out.

IIRC a score in the mid-30s or higher probably gets you paid. So, in theory, just nine net birdies and nine 0s still scores well.
