***Official - 2025 Major League Baseball Thread (4 Viewers)

The Cubs fired David Ross and hired Craig Counsell.

Counsell took that to the bank, bromigos. Largest yearly salary for a manager in history.

This article suuuuuuuucks. ESPN bolted Olney to a desk and made him write this whiny piece about why Ohtani won't give them content.

Ken Rosenthal wrote a similar piece in The Athletic but looked into some options to try juice up the hot stove league.

It's fair to say MLB's off-season is lame compared to the other major US sports but that's true of baseball marketing itself in general. I don't think it's fair to criticize Ohtani and his agent for what's more of a systemic issue. I'm sure the journalists stuck in Opryland would like to see more action or at least some leaks but spring training is still a long way away.

It's official:

Soto and Grisham

For

King, Thorpe, Brito, Vazquez, Higashioka

King was tough to give up but for Soto it's a move that Yanks had to make

Rumors of Ohtani signing with Toronto today

I have to say I am STUNNED. They werent even in the top 10 teams I expected him to possibly sign with.

Media up here is going crazy. What a day this would be for Jays (and Canadians). The fact this guy may actually come here was almost unfathomable a month ago even. Nobody will be able to afford to go to a game, but still would be fun seeing him on TV in a Jays uni.

edited since it's still rumours and I hope IO didn't jinx it

They discussed this today on the Dan Patrick Show. The ownership group is a global media company (Rogers) and Ohtani wants more global coverage. He also wants to play in a climate controlled stadium - they said he crushes it in Toronto. Makes sense I guess. Probably had enough U-S-A 'murica too but that's just conjecture.

Does he realize that $500 million canadian dollars = $367,947,500 united states dollars?

That could be offset by having a global communications and media conglomerate offering other opportunities to capitalize on his global appeal, especially in Asian markets. Also, I think the population of Toronto is something like 20% Asian according to recent data.

Starting to look like Ohtani to the ... Blue Jays??
A bunch of people are/were tracking a private jet that was flying from Anaheim to Toronto. Until he officially signs with the Blue Jays I'm just going to assume these people are tracking some random rich guy.
From Reddit:

Some dude's trying to head to Canada to cheat on his wife and has no idea thousands of redditors are watching his every move

Close…

Our CBC photographer Evan Mitsui is messaging me from Pearson Airport right now.

He confirms new reports that Ohtani was NOT on the private jet.

It was in fact carrying Canadian businessman Robert Herjavec and his family.

I personally think it's a

I think it's more Indian/Pakistan than Chinese/Japan

I'm imagining him getting off the plane surrounded by a bunch of people in Blue Jays gear. Amazing.

He'd be heading to Windsor if that was the case.

When was the last time that a player in a major sport averaged more than 50% more money a year than the 2nd highest player? That’s crazy.

Hate all you want. He was the most coveted free agent in memory. And he’s a Dodger. He’s 29. They’ll get at least 6 great years out of him on the field and immense value off of it. Friedman is a genius.
