Remember when Lane Thomas was a thing?
Prospects that the Nats got have been playing well too. Jose Tena was probably the second best prospect of the three they got, and he’s already in the majors and had a walk off hit in his debut the other day.

ETA: Tena had two more hits yesterday. He now has 5 hits in 12 at-bats since he was called up. Lane Thomas has 5 hits in 48 at-bats with Cleveland.

If I was a Congressman I'd have MLB up for anti-trust revocation. Stupid Apple TV deal. No local broadcast. Not on MLB.tv either.
:hot:
Once again, not available on the local sports network or MLB.
And it's Skenes tonight
Those rat bastages!

They do this to me too. I bought the Padre package via MLB as we have no local broadcast now. Yet every game (even those in town) against the Dodgers are blacked out. So 13 games a year against our main divisional rivals I can never see, YET I PAY FOR THEM. It’s maddening.

Addressing where the Brewers start a reliever for the first inning, then put in their intended starting pitcher?
Who cares? If a team thinks that’s their best way to win, why shouldn’t they do that? Why allow closers? Make every starting pitcher pitch the whole game no matter what. I hated outlawing the shift too because it’s punishing teams for being smart. But I can understand how they wanted the game to flow better and not be too easy for the defense. Like goaltending or defensive three seconds in basketball. But I don’t understand how this starting pitcher thing will make the game better

If they want to make guys pitch longer, just don't let them carry so many on the freaking roster.

I love how MLB keeps pretending the problem is the rules and not that all the games are blacked out.

In their defense, the pace of play rules have improved the televised product although I think things almost go by too fast when I'm at a game.

An opener adds a couple of pitching changes to the game which take about 3-4 minutes each if they happen during an inning

Seriously, mlb.tv kind of sucks now. Half the games I want to watch are blacked out
When I moved to northern Wisconsin they tried to black out white sox games up here. We are about 4 hours from Chicago. I don’t give two craps about the white sox, but they were playing the royals so I couldn’t watch the royals. Which is why I got the app.

I called the 1-800 number for customer support and they were able to somehow lift the blackout for my account.

You may want to try that.

They want to keep "fixing" the game to grow the game, but until this is addressed, they are only kidding themselves. They changes they made with the pitch clock and limiting the shifts have made the game to enjoyable to watch again, and there is a group of young talent either up or coming up that should be the face of MLB. However, if someone like me who lives in Iowa and is not close to any MLB teams (closest is MN and KC, 4 hours away) cant watch the games of 6 of the teams because of blackout rules, something needs to change.

I would probably call the number to ask them to put a blackout in place for the royals

Blackouts to protect local broadcast exclusivity are the last vestiges of a dying television model.

How would you define streaming service (in this case Apple TV) broadcasts usurping local broadcasts?

I'll hang up and listen.

MLB has such a large inventory of games that they think packaging some of them off for the highest bidder (Apple, Roku) gives them extra revenue and potentially a different audience vs giving local broadcasters exclusivity for all 162 games. It's essentially what they've been doing for decades with network games although their new streaming partners have nowhere near the same reach.

Brewers 1 game out of having the best record in baseball, and yet they're STILL 100% being slept on...

They've had a really nice season but a rotation of Freddy Peralta, Colin Rea and Tobias Myers is weaker than most of the other contenders.

The Orioles are down to Corbin Burnes, Zack Eflin (who TB dumped), and a 35 year old Suarez (who pitched in Asia for the last 7 years). The rest of the rotation (and half of the bullpen) are made up of guys from this forum.

By the way, CBS Sports' page has already called the Brewers division champs and has them at #5 overall in their latest rankings. For whatever that's worth, but not everyone is sleeping on them.

Brewers certainly did the Royals a solid this weekend.

Royals are in striking distance but their schedule for the next couple of weeks is brutal:

3 w/Angels at home
3 w/Phillies at home
4 @ Guardians
4 @ Astros
3 w/Guardians at home
3 w/Twins at home
3 @ Yankees

Make or break time for them.

I heard a theory around the trade deadline about why the Orioles did not pursue Jameson Taillon: they believed that in the offseason the Cubs would seek to fill the vacancy by going all in on Burnes, and feared the Cubs would outbid them.

Burnes has a close relationship with Craig Counsell, and that would probably require the Orioles to pay a premium that they would not have to pay if Taillon remained with the Cubs.

They added Eflin and Trevor Rogers who are in a similar tier as Taillon

Probably because as of late they seem to always sputter out in the playoffs.
No lies there.

Bullpen is gonna be SICK though with Megill coming back. Between him, Devin, Koenig, Hudson, Payamps, and even Nick Mears, if the starters can just get through 5 innings with the lead (or even just keeping it close), the team should be in really good shape.

Anyone watching the Pete Rose thing on HBO? He comes off like such a scumbag. Like, every lie has 50% truth to it, and it's so obvious. "Oh, I'm contrite now, but only partially, and only about the stuff you already know about." So sad.

Seeing them beat LAD or Philly would be great though.
Unfortunately for the Brewers if they make it that far is they will have to face the Padres, so beating them won’t be happening. 😉

Devin doing what Devin does last night.

Strikes out Contreras
Single
Double
Intentional walk (to load the bases and get to Goldy!)
Strikes out Goldy
Strikes out Gorman

..Greg Maddux would still kill it today…..had nothing to do with roids or velo.
He was a jedi master “Pitcher”
Anyway……case closed.
This is amazing.

Maddux also operated with a strike zone that was about 3 miles wide. Some of those pitches those pitchers got back then were just stupid.
But he also pitched to that strike zone because he was getting calls. He was smart enough and good enough to hit those spots. While he wouldn't get those calls now it likely means he would be more efficient by throwing less pitches as he was a master at pitching to contact and getting outs. I have no doubt he would have no issue in today's game with today's strike zone.

Yeah, I have to agree. I understand what Chief is saying and it may be true for many pitchers then. But not Maddox - he was one of one and I have no doubt he would've thrived no matter what era he pitched in.

pretty cool:
Blue Jays-turned-Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen didn't just play for both teams in the same game -- a first in major league baseball history.

He played for both teams in the same inning.

Jansen became the first major leaguer ever to appear on both sides of a baseball box score when he took the field for Boston on Monday in the resumption of a rain-delayed game he started for Toronto in June -- before he was traded to the Red Sox.

Before the game resumed at 2:06 p.m. ET Monday -- a delay of 65 days, 18 hours and 35 minutes -- Red Sox media relations coordinator Daveson Perez announced the changes in the Fenway Park press box: "Pinch hitting for Danny Jansen: Daulton Varsho. Defensive changes: Danny Jansen now at catcher."

With Jansen behind the plate, Nick Pivetta struck Varsho out to complete the at-bat Jansen started. Then Jansen came up for the Red Sox with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, getting a nice cheer from a sparse makeup game crowd, and hit a lazy liner to first base to end the inning.
