Skene's making his case to start the All-Star game.
Think he’s also making a case for the Cy. He won’t have the innings that guys like Wheeler or Sale end up with but it could be a case of quality over quantity if he continues this dominance.

Wander Franco formally charged.
I don't think folks outside of Tampa/St Pete understand

-My son and I saw a lot of Wander Franco during his short run and I made a comment to my son about some of the tattoos that Franco put on himself and especially around the neck and head area, I just simply commented that something feels not quite right abut him

What a tragedy for the Rays, but I feel like people within the organization might have known this guy was a bad seed and didn't speak up enough
I don't have much proof of all that, but it feels that way

One of his neck tattoos was the MLB logo with the date he made his MLB debut. The other looks like crosses. None of them said "I like underage girls".

How many neck tattoos did Jerry Sandusky have? Jeffrey Epstein? Michael Jackson? That Duggard pedo?

Maybe the Rays organization can hire you for character evaluation, Columbo.

I have him 55/1, pulling for him lol.

Watching the Cubs-Balt series, easily the best Chicago has looked all season. We’ll know more after a big series in St Louis this weekend.

Sale and Wheeler both have an injury history so you never know. I have to imagine that the Pirates will start to curtail Skenes’s innings (especially if they fall out of the wildcard race). 55/1 seems about right to me. I’m just so happy he’s a Bucco.

Shota/Steele/Taillon are pitching like aces. The bullpen has stabilized over the last few weeks. Busch and Happ have been in a groove. Swanson looks to be waking up from a season long slumber.

When Toronto goes into sell mode, the Cubs need to make a play for one of their catchers.

MLB teams are so lucky that a nice round number like 100 is the limit to how many pitches a pitcher should throw in the game. Weird how it worked out so perfectly.
It is not strictly based on the number of pitches. Analytics says that facing a lineup a 3rd and 4th time is when pitchers typically falter. It just so happens that timing also coincides to about 100 pitches. There is no magic to the number. It is more about batters faced.
I bet Nolan Ryan is happy analytics weren’t invented until he was done playing

Once again the worst manager in the history of the game screws his pitcher from making history. Derek Shelton is the biggest clown. Skenes AGAIN working a no hitter, nope the biggest idiot on earth pulls him. The pirates are such a joke anymore. A once proud franchise has become a laughing stock, because of a joke of an owner & a bigger joke of a manager.

Analytics the most idiotic thing to enter sports & ruin it. A bunch of dorks who couldn't actually play the game came up with that garbage.

The 11 year contract kind of puts to bed the idea that anyone in the organization might have thought he was a bad seed. Doesn’t it?

Josh Hamilton too. Maybe the Rays just have a type?

How many guys in MLB put the date they debut in MLB on their neck and then put three crosses up on the other side?
And i would be happy to find my way on to a Major League team just to babysit and try to advise these guys to steer clear of trouble.
I would prefer an NFL team but I would sign up for babysitting duties for any of the 4 major sports

Aside from this horrible story, it does seem like a decent number of athletes do not have good people around them that truly care. I find that sad

I don't know, I quit caring about tattoos on athletes around the time I started sucking in oxygen. But I'm sure you have discovered the breakthrough blueprint of an athlete's future moral character, so stay by that phone, Billy Beane.

Cubs BP is 6th in ERA since June 1.

Skene's making his case to start the All-Star game.
Just announced as the starter.

Wow. Good for him. I know I'm soft but I'm glad the Pirates are using kid gloves with him. He is their future. You don't want to Mark Prior/Kerry Wood this kid. Some of the takes in here on him are absurd.
I think Skenes is going to be a bit of an anomaly with regards to injury. His mechanics and his approach doesn't appear to be a typical max effort to get max velo seen so often these days.

He has the frame and mechanics for "easy gas" to get to triple digits. Take yesterday for example, he was cruising mechanically through 7 innings at 99 pitches. He had 6 pitches in his last inning. I would have sent him out for the 8th (provided he felt fine and wasn't gassed and his mechanics were still on point). See if he could have another single digit pitch count inning. Gives up a hit or baserunner and he gets the hook because it was a 1-0 game.

Agreed

I really thought Sale would be named the starter but now see that he’s pitching on Sunday. Thus, I assume he won’t even pitch in the all star game. Wheeler also won’t pitch because of his injury. Skenes is the logical choice. I can’t wait to tune in for that!

You think they’re going to pay him in the future?

No, I expect the Astros to offer him a Shohei type deal once he's available. I would be a furious Pirate's fan.

It is possible to manager is beholden to higher powers in the organization. I dunno....as a Skenes owner in dynasty I'm fine with how Pitt has handled him.

I don't think he has been handled bad at all. I think the last 6IP no hit outing he had it was the right thing to do in pulling him. I don't think pulling him yesterday was a terrible thing to do (especially in a 1-0 game). I am just saying as a manager I would have let him start the 8th inning.

He'll have his chances in the future to throw no-nos. He's a baby. He needs adults to protect his future and I hope/think that's what we are seeing.

They won the game. Hard to find fault with the manager's decision here.

We’re prior and wood really about overuse? Prior threw 116 innings his rookie year and his max was 211 in his second year. this was after he pitched in college.

Wood was maybe a little closer to overuse, but he pitched 166 in his first year and then had Tommy John, which is not uncommon.

I’m not sure that anyone really has the formula for keeping a pitcher’s arm healthy for years.

Not arguing against teams taking a conservative approach, just unclear to me how persuasive the evidence is on either side.

Ok so I know none of you will believe me but my name isn’t actually Fred and I’m the guy that caught McCutchen’s 300th HR today. There is at least one FBG on here who could verify that. One of the best and most insane days of my life and I got to experience it with my 9 year old son!
I hope they threw beer on you ..... ;)

Awesome
The fans were so awesome to us all game. When I caught that ball, they booed the heck out of me when I refused to throw it back. I just stood up, pointed to my shirt and yelled “that isn’t happening!”. At that point I had no idea that it was # 300. Then next thing I know we are being whisked away by security and taking pics/videos with Cutch and the other Pirates. This will be a day that Toren never forgets!

I think I (and maybe others) had forgotten about your son’s health journey. I’m sure it makes it even more special for your family.

How is he doing?

So happy for him!
Apologies in advance for the novel..........

Thank you @AAABatteries ! Yes Toren was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia in October of 2022. The first 10-12 months of his journey were extremely difficult for all of us (Toren, younger sister Zanya, mom and dad) but he fought hard and taught me a lot of things about resiliency and character. Kids are just different beasts compared to adults. He's now in the maintenance phase of treatment and doing great. I dare say he's pretty much back to "normal" and we can certainly see the light at the end of the tunnel. Obviously from the video you can see that he has a nice, healthy head of hair again (unlike his dad). I told him last summer that he would soon have more hair than me and here we are! There were a couple FBGs (won't mention any names) that were instrumental in helping us get through this.

Yesterday was an absolute surreal experience for us. I really am a diehard Pirates fan and Cutch has always been my favorite player growing up (I wasn't old enough during the Stargell/Clemente days). Let me tell you about the unbelievable chain of events that had to happen for us to get that ball:

1. I had just gotten back from a business trip Thursday night and was not really in the mood to go to a game over the weekend. Toren was adamant that he wanted to see his Pirates.
2. My wife and I had planned for the 4 of us to go to the game on Saturday. However, the weather was really crappy and we decided to scrap that plan.
3. Toren was adamant that he now wanted to go on Sunday (last chance to see the Pirates in Philly unless they meet in October - lol yeah good one). We have close friends who are Phils season ticket holders and usually just buy their tickets. They had already sold them.
4. Wheeler was pitching and the weather was going to be gorgeous so there were only a handful of seats left. In fact, 4 of us going together was no longer an option. I asked Toren to pick who he wanted to go with and he picked me over mom! She's shorter than me and would have had no chance at catching that ball!
5. Tickets for 2 were also extremely limited. Basically there were upper deck and a few remaining seats just beyond the outfield fence. Obviously the upper deck tickets were cheaper but I decided that giving him a nice view and experience was worth the extra money. The potential for catching a HR ball did not play into my decision at all lol.
6. I told Toren at the start of the game that if the Pirates are losing late, we are leaving early to beat out traffic. They're facing Wheeler so we both agreed the odds of that are pretty damn good.
7. Suwinski hits that grand slam (after some sloppy Phils defense) and I tell him that we're sticking around until the end of the game.
8. The 9th inning hits and all I'm thinking is that I just want the game to end and go home. I wasn't even paying attention to what was going on at that point.
9. Then the play happens and well you all see the amount of fortuitous luck that directs that ball into my hand lol.

When we were in the clubhouse with Cutch and the other players/staff, one of the guys asked Toren if he plays baseball. Since his diagnosis, he has a port in his chest to receive his infusions and cannot play any contact sports. I thought about mentioning his cancer right there but decided not to. I felt that the moment was about Cutch and not us. In hindsight and now witnessing how classy of a man Cutch is, I feel that I made a mistake. It likely would have made that moment so much more special for Cutch if he knew that the Pirates fan (in Philly surrounded by red) who got that ball has gone through hell for the past year and a half.

The chapter isn't over yet. The principal of Toren's school has connections with people high up in the Phillies organization. He contacted me today and wants to get the word of Toren out to the Pirates. Not that I need or want anything for our family but me somehow catching that ball has probably changed his life. After what he's been through, I want him to be spoiled. I still just can't believe it happened. It doesn't even feel real and Toren's story makes it an absolute miracle.

p.s. I hate the fact that I'm all over the internet but it was all worth it for Toren to experience this.
Amazing story Fred, thank you for typing this all out and sharing. Huge Bucs/Cutch fan here so that part especially hits home, but incredible story even outside that.
Just saw an interview posted on Twitter about Fred’s family (I think), very cool!

Yup that’s us. If you Google, “Fox Sports 1 Toren Mehta”, you will find a 6 minute video of the interview that Fox Sports did with us at the Pirates game Memorial Day weekend. They did an amazing job.

I watched the draft last night and am watching the HR derby tonight. Why you ma ask (the wife is watching her Ipad with her headphones on and there is nothing else to watch). Is it just me, or does MLB try way too hard to hype up boring events? Watching the draft last night, it seemed like they were trying to make it like the NFL draft coverage, which it will never be. Trust me, I would much rather watch the MLB all-star game than the pro bowl, but it seems to me that MLB is overdoing it a bit

The girl that just, I guess sang the national anthem, wow just wow. The most atrocious performance EVER!
4 time grammy nominated country singer Ingrid Andress. If she is good enough to be nominated for a Grammy, I know why I still listen to old school music.

Watching with my daughter. Just brutal.

Agree with the other poster on the draft last night. Coverage just seemed like they threw it together.

I really enjoy Meat Loaf as well, but he doesn't seem like the type of performer that would give a fantastic rendition of the National Anthem.

That cannot be real. She's either doing it on purpose because she got last in her fantasy league, took a lot of LSD a couple hours ago, or we're done as a species. Burn it all down.

Teoscar with 2 HR in 3 swings in the swing-off. #clutch

Been a few years since I've watched this, i like the format
It’s been at least a decade since I last watched, but I had 3 baseball crazed boys in the house and turned it on tonight. I hated the format. Most of the fun I had when I was a kid watching was getting to admire all the moonshots guys were hitting. Now with the timer no one is even watching where the balls land. The kids couldn’t have cared less about it either.

I feel exactly the same. They want more home runs, but in the process the viewer doesn’t really get to see any of them.

They needed to keep with the split screen so you could see the flight of the ball and the batter at the same time. Most guys are dead pull for these so it's easy to set up the two cameras. Plus there is plenty of time between batters to show highlights of the truly majestic shots.

In the end it would probably be better if they just got 5 or 10 outs with no real time limit (but keep a pitch limit so they aren't taking 1000 pitches). Then there is pressure on them to perform or their chances go away.

The other thing that might work is to have it be total HR distance advances instead of total HR's. Incentivize longer HR's more.
