Official 5th Pick, 12 team non PPR thread (1 Viewer)

Just drew the 5 hole.  Doing multiple mocks and as much as I want a big time receiver like DeAndre Hopkins etc my teams are coming up better by going RB first.  Always getting studly receivers in rounds 2/3.  Thoughts? Question is which RB for me.  Can't miss on the pick and RB's are notoriously a gamble.. Gurley if he lasts, David Johnson, Elliott, etc.  Then the likes of Mike Evans/T.Y. in rounds 2-3.

If I take the WR in round 1 I seem to get forced with the likes of Hyde, Jeremy Hill etc through round 4.  Don't like that as much

In the 6 hole in one of my more important leagues and I'm also leaning toward one of those big 3 RBs, since I like the value at WR 2nd and 3rd as well.  If all 3 RBs are gone, Gronk may be choice.

We're in the #4 spot and likewise are eyeing Gurley if he drops, otherwise one of the top 3 WR's. If Gurley would look at a WR at the turn, like Robinson (would be nice) Jeffery, Marshall or Nelson. If we went WR first round then still look at the same WR's with our second pick or RB's: Miller (could drop), Freeman (ya never know) or Charles, and Martin. Mocking rounds 3 and 4 as well.

We don't do draft slots until draft day. We then get to choose our spot until they're all gone. I've been putting players in tiers trying to optimize the best 1-2 round combos. My std league typically goes RB heavy early.

Right now, I'm looking at the 7 hole being optimal. I should be able to get OBJ or Julio there and then Gronk, Charles, ARob, or Dez at 18.

Dez/Rob are not going to be there at 18 but yea I like the thought process.

We pick spots in my league; I chose the 8 spot in my 12-team non-PPR league.  My thought process is that I can get a stud WR like Green/Hopkins and still get a very good RB around the turn like Bell, Charles, Ingram, etc. The bigger benefit is in the 3rd/4th round.  The 3.08 is early enough to get a second great WR like Hilton/Cobb and the 4.05 may land Reed. I like Green, Ingram, Cobb, and Reed more than most though so this strategy fits my particular value sheet well.

Drafted from the 5 hole last night and ended up going Gurley/Rodgers (6 pt TDs)/Evans/Reed in the first four rounds.

What other RB's/WR's did you end up with? In mocks I've been waiting until round 5 to grab a Brees type, and am starting Gurley/Martin/D. Thomas/Maclin/Brees....If I can get those types of receivers (Baldwin too) then I'm fine starting RB/RB.  Scared of what a RB2 looks like when you pick one in round 5.

QB Rodgers/Manning, RB Gurley, R. Mathews, Gore, Bernard, Ajayi, WR Evans, Hilton, Decker, Shepard, Snead, TE Reed, K Crosby, DST Cardinals

I used draft dominator and picked the #1 recommended player every single time, except for the K and DST in the last 2 rounds. Standard scoring (non PPR, 6 pt passing TD.) We start 2/2/1 plus 1 flex.

Extremely weak RBs in non ppr in my opinion.  Like the WRs/TE/QB, but in standard I really don't love the overall team

Had the 5th in my standard and ended up swapping 1st and 2nd round picks with the guy at 9 for 15% of his FAB budget. I might be kicking myself if DJ ends up being a monster, but I think I plan on going Gronk/WR heavy so that seems like a better spot.

The DD is a great tool, but you need to somewhat adjust I believe.  I am very confused how you got Hilton in the 5th round though.
I was really hammered by the time it got to the 4th round or so. I almost wavered when it told me to pick Rodgers in the 2nd, but I figured I was either all in or all out.

Agreed it's a little weak at RB but it's tough to beat Hilton/Mathews/Decker in 5/6/7.

If I look at other rosters in my league, nobody is stacked at RB really. The best combo of RBs is probably David Johnson/Lamar miller. But that guy is starting Cooks and Moncrief at WR.

Is this a 10 man league?  Hilton rarely makes it past the middle of the 3rd in most leagues.  5th seems not possible.

I've done 15+ mocks.  By far the best scenario is going best available RB in round 1 (Gurley, Elliott, Johnson, Miller - I'm not going AP) followed by the best available RB in round 2 (Martin, Lacy) followed by WR's in round 3 and 4 (D. Thomas, Cooks, A. Cooper in the first tier and Maclin type in round second tier).  Then can go QB if needed (ours is a 6 point TD league and I'm targeting Brees) and then take upside RB/WR's the rest of the way.

I'm not a draft RB early guy.  But every time I take a WR in rounds 1 or 2 from that middle draft slot I end up really scrambling for RB's I'm not happy with.  And the pool of WR's once you move past that top elite tier is so deep you are guaranteed to get WR's you like in rounds 3 and 4.

Well, turned out my league's draft when tougher than all of the 50+ mocks I did.  I got the players I wanted from round 5 on, but none of my top 1-2 choices last in the first 4.

1) Lamar Miller (Brown, Gurley, Elliott, Beckham went).  I really wanted Elliott, but made my mind up I was taking Miller over D. Johnson, who went next

2) CJ Anderson.  A slight reach, Lacy, Freeman, Hyde? went.  The only WR I was taking in round 2 was Evans and he went.  Liked CJ over Ingram and Martin

3) Sammy Watkins.  We'll see.  Took him over Cooks, Jeffrey, Cobb, D. Thomas

4) Jordan Reed.  Really thrown a curveball here.  Needed to go WR, and in every mock Maclin or Baldwin was available.  Reed can go for 1,000 and double digit TD's

5) Drew Brees.  6 point TD league with bonus for 300 yards.  Run on QB's - Rodgers, Newton, Luck, Roethlesberger, Eli?, Wilson gone.

6) Allen Hurns.  Target was Marvin Jones, but I had Hurns over Jones.  WR group was iffy, so like him as WR2 or 3.

7) Christine Michael.  Strategy was to make bets on multiple RB's in great situations.  Looked great this preseason.  Like the upside vs the likes of Sims and Crowell who went near him.

8. Michael Crabtree.  Stats not that far behind Cooper.  Good value as WR4

9. Alfred Morris.  My 2nd RB bet.  If Zeke tweaks that hamstring I've got gold.

10. Vikings D.  Defenses were flying (Broncos in 6th?).  Seattle, AZ, Carolina, Texans, Chiefs, Rams, Jets gone

11. Spencer Ware.  My 3rd RB upside bet

12. K. Aiken.  Really stunned he lasted this long as likely #1 in Baltimore.  WR 5

13. Andy Dalton.  Don't love him.  Best available backup QB

14. Blair Walsh.  The kickers I wanted were gone.  But going indoors with new stadium, good D, big leg.  You never know with kickers

15. Eagles D.  Almost went Pryor here but had enough WR's.  Eagles look like a turnover machine, Gives me options with D's.

So:

QB - Brees, Dalton

RB's - L. Miller, CJ Anderson, C. Michael, A. Morris, S. Ware

WR's - S. Watkins, J. Reed, A. Hurns, M Crabtree, K. Aiken

K - Walsh

D/ST - Vikings, Eagles

Not big on names, but foundation with most players I think will have very good years.  Didn't love the 5th spot.

Nothing really unusual about the draft.  First round went Brown, Gurley, Elliott, Beckham, Miller, D Johnson, L. Bell, Julio, AP, D. Hopkins, AJ Green, J Charles.  Some gambled on waiting on QB's and won.  Bortles went in round 9.  Cousins went in the 10th.  Other notes.  D. Thomas lasted too long (mid 4th, and he looked good last night).  Same round as Josh Gordon.

QB Rodgers/Manning, RB Gurley, R. Mathews, Gore, Bernard, Ajayi, WR Evans, Hilton, Decker, Shepard, Snead, TE Reed, K Crosby, DST Cardinals

This is a monster team.  Congrats.

You did well Judge.  CJ will go a long way toward deciding your fate, IMO. The only thing I don't like is how when you double up at the start at one position it both prevents you from going BPA in rounds 3 & 4.   I've done a bunch of mocks at both the 5 slot and the 9 slot and I almost always like my team better when I start WR-RB or RB-WR.

Good luck!

Thanks.  I hear you.  Tried a bunch of different ways.  I could have gone Julio, then CJ. Question is the 2nd RB.  There were tons of receivers and the only receiver that I though was 2nd round worthy near my spot was M. Evans, and he went 5 picks before me.  I saw a huge group of 20+ receivers who could all get 1,000 yards and 8-10 touchdowns, but a big drop off at RB.  I didn't want to be naked at RB.  But I may be a bit weak at WR, and I'm exposed injury wise with Watkins (foot) and Reed (concussion history).  May have to shore that up.  Hope I hit the RB lottery with a few of my tickets...Team has a chance - not ecstatic about it.  Will need to be active...

David Johnson = Playing to win
I took DJ last night over Julio in a 14 team draft. Atlanta has looked like absolute garbage and I hate Shanny plus the ankle didn't help. The way I saw it I could find WR value and that is exactly what happened when I scored Dez on the way back in the second round (right?) then K. Allen in the third. It was a great start and I feel like it set me up to crush the rest of the draft which i did. *humble brag*
