***Official Academy Awards Discussion Thread*** - Anora is the Big Winner (1 Viewer)

I think the explanation is pretty simple - lack of star power.

It's the similar problem that the XFL has - it might be football but the players aren't very interesting.

Who is the biggest movie star of today, male or female? The answer just isn't as obvious as it was 5, 10, 20 years ago. So who were people suppose to tune in and see last night? I can't think of anyone.
And IF they did tune in the other night for stars, the format of pairing many of the awards trimmed down on the # of stars that came out as well.

They just won't be able to make everybody happy or to get it completely right. IMO the song performances usually are the low point for me, but that is also one of the few spots where they could get people interested in a star like Gaga or Rihanna and tune in.

That drop from 2014 to a mere decade later is astonishing. Perhaps the cultural importance and the pull of movies has just failed to capture the American public's imagination anymore. I have some theories why, but I won't muck up the thread with them.

I know I've tuned out and given a reason why. But I don't think that there are as many people like me as the overall number might suggest, so I'm not doing a victory lap. I genuinely wonder whether a lot of societal problems that we had in the past were actually glossed over by the American appetite for escapism, and that escapism no longer holds sway over younger generations.
I don't remember why that was, and it wouldn't be mucking up a thread it's discussing the topics.

I can think of a lot of reasons why the drop in interest for movies are: onset of great TV shows, streaming options, 90% of movies in the theater are basically one thing and geared towards the pg-13 demographic, too much politics (not the way people might think I mean it), movies are long, people are entertained by their phones, it's so expensive to go to the theater, on and on.

It’s a lot of the things mentioned

1. Anything that isn’t football has seen their ratings tank the last 10 years as the monoculture breaks up, people cut the chord, young people abandon the concept of “watching TV”.

2. The stars that drew in older audiences are fading out and younger audiences connect with their stars via social media. They don’t need to wait for the Oscars or Tonight Show to see Austin Butler. He’s everywhere on social media, podcasts, YouTube, etc.

3. The appreciation of any awards show is definitely less than it used to be.

4. With the monoculture breaking up, almost every movie is niche so most people are only familiar with the little corner of movies they like. Probably similar to music, sports, tv. Even if a movie like Elvis makes $300 million, the people who didn’t see it have a high percentage of not even knowing it exists where as 25 years ago people were just more aware of the hit songs, shows, etc.

5. A little of what Rock was hinting at. People more interested (obsessed) with news, conspiracies, etc. People of all ages spending way more time on their phones. Politicization of anything Hollywood.

Sporting events aside, the draw of live television events has plummeted. Must see network tv is no longer. This is due in part to the exponential growth of high quality streaming options and in part to the instantaneous availability of any noteworthy moments on YouTube and other platforms. Why suffer through three hours of an award show when I can pull up and watch Ke Huy Quan’s acceptance speech instantly whenever I want.

Plus the other factors mentioned by others.

Oscar ratings still spiraling downward over the years....

16 million last night vs 40 million in 2013
Articles I am seeing show 18.7 million which is a 3 year high and up 12% from last year.

That said, live TV is struggling. For example, in 2012 NCIS was the most watched TV show with 21 million viewers (more than even SNF averaged). In 2022, the most watched scripted network show was FBI with 8.6 million viewers. Last year's Oscars were still the 23rd most watched TV event of the year. The only events higher than it that weren't the NFL was one prime time night of the Olympics and the Georgia-Alabama National Title Game.

yeah, gotta believe those numbers are heavily influenced by the number of viewing choices people have today and a younger audience that almost completely eschews network television. I have a 26 yr. old and an 18 yr. old - I don't believe either watches any network television - or cable television channels.

Okay, it’s way early and I don’t want to jinx anything but my employer is producing Killers of the Flower Moon and the trailer was just released. Looks fantastic.

The book was great. Looking forward to this one.

The media embargo on Killers of the Flower Moon has been lifted. 95% on RT so far. Sounds like it might deliver.

Word is that Lily Gladstone is amazing. And she was about to quit acting altogether when the meeting with Scorsese came through.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gladstone shared that she was registering for a data analytics course when the meeting with Scorsese came through. “You just wonder if it’s going to be sustainable,” the actress said. According to Gladstone, this conversation took place in August 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 shutdowns and the early days of Gladstone’s search for a new career. “So I had my credit card out, registering for a data analytics course.”

Gladstone had hoped to study the migratory patterns of murder hornets (!) for the Department of Agriculture; instead, she is headlining the most anticipated movie release of the year. “

I'd never heard of it. Asked my wife about it and she has the book. I'm going to start reading it soon.

Watched EEAAO last night. The first 45-60 min was fantastic, then it just kind of meandered in weirdness the rest of the way.

Not sure how Short Round won an Oscar for his performance, but whatever.
Watched this on a plane, can't imagine what the appeal was. Broke my streak of seeing any of the best pictures in the last decade.

Thought I’d bump with awards season upon us. Nominees announced this year on Jan. 23rd. Oppenheimer racking up the Best Picture awards so far — most recently at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards.

Emmy’s are tonight for those who prefer TV to movies, but, eh, we’re all watching Eagles-Bucs, right?

It feels like the winners this year are going to be pretty obvious

Picture: Oppenheimer
Director: Oppenheimer
Actor: Cillian Murphy or Paul Giamatti- this is probably the closest race
Actress: Lily Gladstone
Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr (he was good but am I the only person who didn't think this an Oscar level performance?)
Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph
Foreign: Anatomy of a Fall or Zone of Interest

The 2 screenplay awards are kind of wide open IMO

Weirdest thing by far is all the nominations for Anatomy of a Fall, including Best Picture, but it didn't get a Best International nomination. That makes no sense at all.

France chose not to submit it this year - France’s Oscar committee went for ”The Taste of Things” instead. Some theories out there that a bit of payback for Justine Triet criticizing Macron.

Ahhhh that makes sense, thanks

Oppenheimer looks like it will be the big winner but if there is a surprise, I could see The Holdovers shaking up Best Picture and Actor races.

Since Gerwig and Robbie aren't nominated, will the internet explode if Ryan Gosling is the only win for Barbie?
Just not getting nominated will probably be enough to cause the internet to explode.
It did get best picture and Gerwig got a screenplay so it's not like it got totally snubbed. It did really well for a blockbuster comedy.
0 chance it gets pic, so I guess that leaves 1 out. I haven't watched it yet, but just for the reactions I thought Ken being the only win for Barbie would set off a firestorm.

Anatomy of a Fall nominated for Best Picture but not Best Foreign Film?

Isn't Ferrerra also nominated?

Ah, missed this post.

In addition to Killers, I have an employment-related rooting interest for Anatomy of a Fall.

Yep, forgot about that. She won't win, but it's a nice nomination. I doubt Barbie wins anything beyond song and some kind of costume or production design.

Oppenheimer is gonna have a haul, but hair and make-up?

If your employment-related reason relates to Neon, here is an article about their views on the current system… https://www.indiewire.com/news/gene...nternational-oscar-process-broken-1234916438/

I suppose Gosling has an outside shot but it sure seems like RDJ has been anointed here.

Interesting read. And agree that the process makes no sense. Clearly I hadn't been following the run-up.

Yeah I can't imagine it wins those. It's got a good chance cleaning up on many of the bigger awards though

Godzilla Minus One snags the first nomination in the monster's 70-year cinematic career, but imo it's a snub to not be nominated for Best International or Best Picture.

Looks like another victim of the Oscar rule on each country only able to submit one for international feature, as Japan’s submission was Perfect Days.

Despite the title, it really is a movie that is first and foremost about the Ken character, from beginning to end.
No chance. If that's what men reviewers want to say to justify liking Barbie then so be it, but it's first and foremost about female empowerment. And it was great. Great humor, great cast, surprising for what everyone expected.

I disagree. I also liked it but haven't read any reviews or other discussion of it. For me it had almost nothing to do with "female empowerment" and was all about Ken's journey. The feminist angle was comic relief as much as anything, but there was a good message for young girls in the movie imo regarding materialism and social status.

It's about a lot of things. Ken has his own arc which goes from being treated as kind of useless in the Barbie world to discovering his "manhood" in the real world and seeing how things here are very much flipped from where he came from. I think the movie is clearly female empowerment but it's balanced. It also shows a world where women are in charge and try to treat men like men treated women in the 1950s. It's also interesting to see which world Barbie chooses in the end. Ken for sure has his own arc in the movie which really helped make it such a huge hit being a 4 quadrant movie.

And modern blockbusters continue to be either woke or have Nazis as the bad guy in their plot. I suppose this will set another year record for nobody watching the awards.

I asked my nephew—who shows no signs of politics—if he was going to see Barbie. (He's seen Oppenheimer.) "**** no," he replied. That was what his friends said, too. I'm not making this up. I was stunned. I figured it was a feel-good movie everyone could see.

They're feeling it. The young men are hating it. Wokey McWokerson, no matter how well it was done.

I'll show myself out now.

It’s far from surprising that young boys and men would be resistant to Barbie. Next you are going to tell me your young nephew doesn't’ listen to Taylor Swift. Young boys and young men tend to have some protective sense of their manhood and strongly resist things that seem “girly”. I know I did. I would hardly even listen to female singers as a teen because I thought that meant the music was soft or fake.

Also a weird year to take a shot at the popularity of the awards given the biggest favorite made a billion dollars.
