Those of you worrying about Texas and Ohio are worrying for good reason. He may have momentum, but IIRC he's far behind in those two states.
I'm not expecting Texas. Ohio, though, ought to play to his strengths. It's the Midwest, broadly speaking. It's got a huge number of young voters, for example. It's got a large enough African American constituency (12%) that could make a difference in a close vote. PA might be too much like NJ for him to get ahead.

Obama calling on the Clintons to release their income tax returns -- in part to show where the 5 million dollar loan might have come from. I'll bet some enterprising right wing fanatic types are looking into this issue as well.ETA: sorry for the honda, didn't check one page back.

Obama suggests Clinton show tax returnsThu Feb 7, 11:35 PM ETDemocrat Barack Obama suggested Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton follow his lead and release her and her husband's income tax returns so the public can see where the $5 million she loaned her presidential campaign came from.A day earlier, Clinton acknowledged that she had made the loan late last month. At the time, Obama was raising and spending more money than her heading into the round of presidential primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday.Asked whether he would call on the Clintons to release their tax returns, Obama stopped short of saying they should."I'll just say that I've released my tax returns. That's been a policy I've maintained consistently. I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from. But I'll leave it up to you guys to chase it down," he told reporters on the flight to Omaha, Neb., for a rally."I've disclosed my income tax returns," he said. "I think we set the bar in terms of transparency and disclosure that has been a consistent theme of my campaign and my career in politics."There was no immediate comment from Clinton's campaign.Obama noted that Clinton is wealthier than he is. Asked whether he would rule out tapping his personal funds to pay for his presidential campaign, he said, "I don't have enough money to drop $5 million into a campaign."Clinton's financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place her and former President Clinton's wealth between $10 million to $50 million.Obama released tax documents last year showing income of more than $991,000 for him and his wife, Michelle. The figure included his Senate salary as well as her income as an administrator of the University of Chicago Hospitals.

Hillary Clinton Leads Ohio Poll Released by Columbus Dispatch Poll

Washington D.C. 2/05/2008 04:27 AM GMT (FINDITT)

Here are the latest results from the Ohio poll by Columbus Dispatch Poll published on USAElectionPolls.com:

There were 2156 voters polled on 1/23-31.

Columbus Dispatch Poll

Date: 1/23-31

Ohio

Added: 2/5/08

Est. MoE = 2.1%

Hillary Clinton 42%

Barack Obama 19%

John Edwards 18%

Dennis Kucinich 1%

Unsure 20%

Quote:

Obama's failure to win support from even one in five Ohio Democrats is the poll's most striking finding. He barely beat former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who withdrew last week. The poll included all candidates who qualified for the Ohio ballot; those who have quit the race have until 4 p.m. Monday to withdraw their names officially.

Clinton benefited from an overwhelming poll response from women, who make up two-thirds of her support, to build a 23-point lead over Obama.

"I like her determination when she chooses an issue. She's methodical," said poll participant Janet E. Cook, a Mount Vernon real-estate agent. "I would like to see some major changes and want someone who can get change accomplished in Congress."

This is a game Obama shouldn't play. If Hillary is clean he is going to come out looking like an #######. It's very petty for a guy bragging about how much money he is raising to belittle someone who is trying to stay in it with their own.

Am I understanding this whole "superdelegate" thing correctly? What I'm hearing is that even after every state has awarded their delegates through primaries and whatnot, certain influential people can override the will of the American people with extra votes they receive? That can't be right, can it? If so, it would seem to be extremely foolish of them to vote against the American people's wishes. I can't think of a quicker way I would go from an "undecided" to a McCain voter than to have Hillary "win" the nomination that way. And I would lose a lot of respect for the party as well.
What does it matter if it's close  . It's not like caucusing is a good representation of the people, or the breaking up of districts, or the exclusion of whole states from the process all together.

Ohio is not good for Obama. But it's not THAT bad either.

Large state + no campaigning yet = huge advantage for Clinton.

Campaigning + $$$ = big late surge for Obama.

This is actually a fairly decent picture for Obama, even though he only had 19% support at the time. With Hillary only at 42%, and Edwards/Undecided representing 38% of the vote it means that the state is pretty wide open at this point. The challenge in Ohio is going to be making in roads with that sub 50K income bracket.

He is insinuating that he wants to know where the $5MM came from. If he didn't think it was dirty he wouldn't care. There is no other reason to know. It's their money.

If Haliburton asked President Clinton to come and speak for a $2M fee and then the next day the Clintons loaned the campaign $2M that wouldn't raise a flag?

The question shouldn't be coming from the Obama campaign - and certainly not from Barack himself. Maybe a surrogate raising the question. Maybe.

Ding ding ding ding. His whole game is petty. He deserves nothing. His game is the welfare approach and it's pathetic. What's wrong with earning money and supporting yourself? His tactic in the debates is to belittle as he stands there in this smarmy cloud of arrogance. Don't get me wrong, hillary is almost as arrogant. But this obama jerk is something else. Movement? What movement? What does he do for the country that anyone knows is going to carry through a presidency. He is about being black and nothing more. His senatorial record is riddled with holes and his voting record is rediculous. It amazes me how many sheep we have in this country. If you don't think we belong in the middle east right now then go ahead and elect a super-left-muslim and see where this country is in 10 years.

Obama suggests Clinton show tax returns

Thu Feb 7, 11:35 PM ET

Democrat Barack Obama suggested Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton follow his lead and release her and her husband's income tax returns so the public can see where the $5 million she loaned her presidential campaign came from.

A day earlier, Clinton acknowledged that she had made the loan late last month. At the time, Obama was raising and spending more money than her heading into the round of presidential primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday.

Asked whether he would call on the Clintons to release their tax returns, Obama stopped short of saying they should.

"I'll just say that I've released my tax returns. That's been a policy I've maintained consistently. I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from. But I'll leave it up to you guys to chase it down," he told reporters on the flight to Omaha, Neb., for a rally.

"I've disclosed my income tax returns," he said. "I think we set the bar in terms of transparency and disclosure that has been a consistent theme of my campaign and my career in politics."

There was no immediate comment from Clinton's campaign.

Obama noted that Clinton is wealthier than he is. Asked whether he would rule out tapping his personal funds to pay for his presidential campaign, he said, "I don't have enough money to drop $5 million into a campaign."

Clinton's financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place her and former President Clinton's wealth between $10 million to $50 million.

Obama released tax documents last year showing income of more than $991,000 for him and his wife, Michelle. The figure included his Senate salary as well as her income as an administrator of the University of Chicago Hospitals.
This is a game Obama shouldn't play. If Hillary is clean he is going to come out looking like an #######. It's very petty for a guy bragging about how much money he is raising to belittle someone who is trying to stay in it with their own.
He was asked a question and he responded. He has released his tax forms they haven't. He didn't speculate that the money was dirty. I think Hillary, and her supporters, like playing the martyr card personally.
He is insinuating that he wants to know where the $5MM came from. If he didn't think it was dirty he wouldn't care. There is no other reason to know. It's their money.

It followed the line of questioning. That's why the article says, Democrat Barack Obama suggested Thursday that Hillary Rodham Clinton follow his lead and release her and her husband's income tax returns so the public can see where the $5 million she loaned her presidential campaign came from.

I'll see if I can find the exact questions he resonded to.

His senatorial record is riddled with holes and his voting record is ridiculous. It amazes me how many sheep we have in this country. If you don't think we belong in the middle east right now then go ahead and elect a super-left-muslim and see where this country is in 10 years.
I don't know where to begin....Suffice to say, you misspelled ridiculous.Everything else is too backwards, idiotic and racist to acknowledge.
Show me racist and backwards. Dispense with the spell check - it happens.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is considering a major tax hike on the rich to shore up the nation's Social Security system.

Obama is floating the idea of a tax hike on the rich as a way of assuring lower- and middle-income voters that he sees an option for ensuring Social Security's solvency that would not burden them. Obama has been indirectly criticized by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for suggesting on ABC News' "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" that a higher retirement age should be "on the table."

By suggesting the elimination of the Social Security tax cap, Obama has distinguished himself as the presidential candidate most willing to touch the "third rail" of American politics. No other major candidate has come close to offering a specific idea with the potential of generating as much revenue.

Obama's idea, however, also carries considerable political risk.

Eliminating the Social Security tax cap without changing the benefit formula could undermine support for the program among the roughly five percent of Americans who earn more than $97,000 per year.

"It would be a radical change in how the program has been designed," said Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a non-partisan group that advocates a balanced budget. "It would end the contributory idea of Social Security, where you get back something for what you put in."

Obama's consideration of a tax hike is under fire from Republicans for its sheer size.

Higher taxes that's one way to bring change to the White house

There are some issues with significantly raising the social security tax cap (it actually raises based on formula every year and is more like $102,000 in 2008), mostly around how self employed people are affected since they pay the full 12.4%. This wouldn't be felt by very many people, but I want to see some numbers about what the real gain would be to the system. It's not worth doing if it doesn't make a major change to the solvency of the program.

LOL...when I see that the biggest socialist on the board likes Obama more and more, it makes me wonder if I should reconsider my support.

First off, you really should supply a link or something with your accusations.Second, everyone know SS is broken and its broken because it is not bringing in enough money to pay for its obligations. Considering that, a way to increase the revenues should be considered. As well as a way to decrease expenditures (raising the retirement age).I'm pretty receptive to the suggestion you say he made, with the exception of raisng the cap on the self-employed. Thye get hit pretty ahrd already and it may not be fair to include them in the new limits (or no limits). But the fact is its broken. It will take guts and leadership to fix it without gutting it.

He stated that he thinks transparency in government applies to the disclosure of tax returns by elected officals. I don't think he insinuated anything about the $5MM in response to the question (but, admittedly, I'm only reading the quotes in the article).

Well, you can either go by his own words (the quote) or you can go by the reporter's interpretation of his words. It looks like you chose the latter. Frankly, I didn't think you were the kind of guy to trust the media to report things correctly without putting its own spin on things. Especially when there is a direct quote from him right there.

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02...bout-that-loan/

Updated OMAHA –- Senator Barack Obama said today that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s decision to not disclose her income tax returns raises questions about the decision to loan $5 million to her campaign. “I’ll just say that I’ve released my tax returns –- that’s been a policy I’ve maintained consistently,” Mr. Obama said, speaking to reporters as he flew from Louisiana to Nebraska for a campaign rally. “I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from.” Mr. Obama stopped short of issuing a call for Mrs. Clinton and former President Bill Clinton to release their tax returns. His statement came in answering a question from a reporter about whether voters have a right to know where Mrs. Clinton’s $5 million loan came from.

I saw the clip somewhere, but I can't find it anymore. The reporter asks specifically about the loan. Obama responds to that question.

Here's some interesting information on Hillary's congressional earmarks:

"In her short time in the United States Senate, the senator from New York, Senator Clinton, got $500-million worth of pork barrel projects."

John McCain on Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 in a campaign event in Fairfield, Conn.

Clinton brought home even more bacon

Mostly true

With polls showing he has a solid lead in most Super Tuesday states, Sen. John McCain took aim at Sen. Hillary Clinton while campaigning in Fairfield, Conn., on Feb. 3, 2008.

McCain boasted that he never sought special projects for his state, while Clinton had sought too many.

"In her short time in the United States Senate, the senator from New York, Senator Clinton, got $500-million worth of pork barrel projects. My friends, that kind of thing is going to stop," McCain said.

We have previously found exceptions in McCain's claims about his own pork (we gave him a False in this item), but he's right that Clinton brought lots of federal money to New York. It's just that he dramatically understates how much pork she got.

After she was elected in 2000, Clinton spent her first term focusing heavily on parochial issues. Often joining forces with the senior senator from New York, fellow Democrat Charles Schumer, Clinton issued a blizzard of news releases touting federal money such as $250,000 for "artspace" projects in Buffalo, $200,000 for the Mid-Hudson Children's Museum, $200,00 for the YWCA of Niagara and $69,036 for the golden nematode project at Cornell University (yeah, we had to look it up: the golden nematode is a pest that harms potatoes).

The McCain campaign says it got the $500-million figure from two news stories — a Los Angeles Times, report from December 2007 that said "since taking office in 2001, Clinton has delivered $500-million worth of earmarks that have specifically benefited 59 corporations," and a report in The Hill, a Washington, D.C., political newspaper that said Clinton obtained at least $530-million in federal money from the first three of the 13 appropriations bills approved in 2007.

But those reflect just a portion of Clinton's prolific pork production.

Taxpayers for Common Sense, a group that tracks congressional spending, has identified about $2.2-billion in Clinton projects in her seven years in the Senate. The group won't publish its final database for several weeks, but Keith Ashdown, an investigator for the group, said a preliminary analysis showed Clinton has brought home far more in federal money than the other senators in the presidential race, McCain and Barack Obama.

Ashdown likened Clinton to Al D'Amato, the famous pothole politician who represented New York from 1981 to 1999. "She has used the power of the purse to take care of a lot of areas of New York," Ashdown said.

So McCain is right that Clinton has brought truckloads of bacon to her New York constituents. McCain just dramatically understates the amount. (McCain's campaign said he was simply being "conservative" with his claim.)

For our ruling, we find that while McCain's numbers are low, he's actually more correct than he realizes because she's brought so much pork to New York. We rate his attack Mostly True.

MoE = 2.1% Hillary Clinton 42% Barack Obama 19% John Edwards 18% Dennis Kucinich 1% Unsure 20% Quote: Obama's failure to win support from even one in five Ohio Democrats is the poll's most striking finding.
18% for Edwards and 20% unsure. That's 38% of Ohio still up for grabs. If 31% goes to Obama and 7% goes to Clinton, Obama wins the state. And quite honestly, given how much Obama is prooving to appeal to the last minute voter, I think 31-7 is quite realistic. If anything, I think Clinton will struggle to get the 7.

So I've been trying to convince my mother-in-law to vote for Obama. She was a Biden supporter before. She votes this Tuesday. So I just got this email today:

[fatguy],I went to Obama's webb site. I read about him and some of his thoughts. I felt taken back to the 70's. Obama DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE, in my opinion, to handle the problems that the next president will face. WE HAVE "WORLD PROBLEMS"! He focuses on domestic problems and is not complete in his explanation of them, in my opinion, therefore he even falls short domestically. I am not willing to take a chance on Obama at this time from what I have read or seen so far. If there is a site that you think would change my opinion, please send it to me. Thanks. love, mom
Any ideas here?

The Nation: Obama For President

Feb. 9, 2008(The Nation) This column was written by the editors of The Nation

As this year's front-loaded primary calendar took shape, capped off with the February 5 Super-Mega-Duper Tuesday, many voters once again resigned themselves to watching from the sidelines as a few early states got the privilege of choosing the party's nominee. Yet despite a schedule tailor-made to benefit the establishment candidate and confer an early victory, we are, somewhat miraculously, in the midst of the most contested primary race in 24 years. We are all Iowans now.

This state of affairs is thanks almost entirely to the campaign of Barack Obama, who, because of his background and his relatively brief time in the national spotlight, is a truly improbable contender for the presidency. This magazine has been critical of the senator from Illinois for his closeness to Wall Street; his unwillingness to lay out an ambitious progressive agenda on health care, housing and other domestic policy issues; and for post partisan rhetoric that seems to ignore the manifest failure of conservatism over these past seven years. But as Christopher Hayes argued in our cover story last week, Obama has also exhibited a more humane and wise approach to foreign policy, opposing the Iraq War while Hillary Clinton voted for it, and has been a reliable progressive ally over the course of his career. While his rhetoric about "unity" can be troubling, it also embodies a savvy strategy to redefine the center of American politics and build a coalition by reaching out to independent and Republican voters disgruntled and disgusted with what the Bush era has wrought. Most important, we feel his candidacy, in its demonstrated investment in organizing and grassroots activism as well as his personal appeal, represents the best chance to forge a new progressive majority. For these reasons we support Obama for President.

Obama's brand of grassroots politics should serve him well in the coming weeks. He has already galvanized a new class of supporters, delivered on the promise of turning out new voters and raised an astonishing amount of money from hundreds of thousands of small donors. In the February contests in caucus states, he can leverage his superior organizing, and in liberal primary states like Maryland and Wisconsin, he can leverage his progressive support in the wake of John Edwards's exit. But the Obama coalition is relatively weak among Latino voters, as well as among the core Democratic constituencies of the elderly and the working class, who are most focused on bread-and-butter basics: making the economy work for the non-rich. As a moral and political imperative, he would do well to seize the mantle of equitable redistribution and broad economic security for those who live their lives on the precipice of bankruptcy and disaster.

While some will fret about the effect on the eventual nominee of a prolonged battle, the upwelling of small-d democratic enthusiasm in this primary — all those impassioned e-mails, phone calls, canvassing sessions and Facebook postings — has reaped real results: record turnout in the first four contests and on Super Tuesday. While the GOP appears to be on the verge of nominating old war (mongering) horse John McCain, Democrats will likely remain divided, and that's quite all right. Primaries are more than just the means of choosing a nominee; they are an opportunity to weave together networks capable of pushing the country, inch by inch, in a new direction. There's nothing quite like the novel experience of casting a meaningful vote to stoke the aspirations and energies of citizens of conscience. As we move toward November, we'll need all the energy we can get.

So I've been trying to convince my mother-in-law to vote for Obama. She was a Biden supporter before. She votes this Tuesday. So I just got this email today:

I think this article articulates pretty well why I am in favor of Obama, if not speaking directly to his "experience" or lack thereof.linky

Obama calling on the Clintons to release their income tax returns -- in part to show where the 5 million dollar loan might have come from. I'll bet some enterprising right wing fanatic types are looking into this issue as well.

ETA: sorry for the honda, didn't check one page back.

He stated that he thinks transparency in government applies to the disclosure of tax returns by elected officals. I don't think he insinuated anything about the $5MM in response to the question (but, admittedly, I'm only reading the quotes in the article).

Don't get your panties in a wad. Here is another article

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02...bout-that-loan/

Then Obaba responds that he has released his tax forms. He also said at some point the media should look into it if they want to know more not ask him. Geesh how far will you go to make a mountain out of this?
I said he shouldn't go there. It was my opinion. Mountain... . You people are so defensive

Great article, thanks for posting.
wtf is solipsistic?okay its:

The theory that the self is the only thing that can be known and verified.
The theory or view that the self is the only reality. So, wtf does that have to do with Obama?

That's odd. If anything, Obama stresses "we" constantly in his rallies, speeches, and debates. While Hillary is all about "I" and "you". Him: We can do big things together. Her: I can do this for you.

Gallup & Time Weigh In: Clinton Most Likely Nominee But Barack Most Electable

2/8/08

According to Time, McCain and Clinton would be in a dead heat 46% to 46% but Obama would overwhelmingly beat McCain 48% to 41%, suggesting that Obama is more electable than Clinton.

But according to the Democratic national polls, Clinton is the most likely nominee.

Democratic Candidate Gallup Time

Pollster Gallup Time

Date 2/4-6 2/1-4

Hillary Clinton 51% 48%

Barack Obama 40% 42%

Other(vol.) 9% 6%

Details Link Link

According to the Democratic national poll by USA Today/Gallup Poll:

Democratic primary voting continues this weekend in Louisiana and Maine, along with caucuses in Washington and Nebraska. Next Tuesday brings the so-called "Potomac primary" involving Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Clinton campaign officials are already defusing expectations by arguing that Obama will be favored to win the caucuses and is favorably positioned in the states holding primaries for the rest of February. If that prophecy comes true, the resulting publicity may push Obama up again in the national tracking.

According to the Democratic national poll by Time Poll conducted by ABT SRBI:

"At this point, either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama is likely to be the Democratic Party's nominee for president. What if Hillary Clinton were to win the Democratic Party nomination for president? Would you personally want Hillary Clinton to choose Barack Obama as her vice-presidential running mate, or would you want her to choose someone else?": Obama 62%, Someone else 24%, Unsure 14%.
