No way Chalky went out like that!
 what did he have left to live for?
**spoilers**

I agree. Chalky lost his daughter, his family, and his money. He was running from the law. He thought he had a chance to help the woman he loved, and he didn't care if it cost him his life. He was dead anyway if he was caught by the police.

Van Alden was totally unexpected and I couldn't think of a better way for him to go out.

I love the Godfather II style flashbacks this season. The actor playing Nucky really did his homework, not just on voice but mannerisms. And while young Eli doesn't resemble old Eli, he also has the same mannerisms. Good job casting,

Nucky is a beaten man, Eli is a beaten man, I can't see how either of them will survive. My hope is that Eli redeems himself to his son and Nucky before he dies. And I want to see closure between Margaret and Nucky (did I just write that?)

revenge? Why didnt he just kill Narcisee when he had the chance and free the woman that way?
You think he gets them out of there alive if he shoots the doctor?
you think as long as the doctor is alive hes going to just let that girl go?
I guess if I was chalky id go with the option where her and the girl live insteadof getting gunned down

So they whittled down the number of characters left I was still interested in to 0 in one episode. Really looking forward to spending lots of time wrapping up the Jillian story and more Eli Junior. Really.

I had let this season slide so I used my Columbus Day to watch them all. Other than Chalky and that other dude in the women's house wasting half an episode it's been pretty damned strong so far. Sally, Van Alden, and Chalky all getting offed and Eli cast into the wind in just over an episode was pretty powerful stuff.

why would they gun down the woman and her child if chalky killed the doctor?

Maybe Chalky is assuming Narcisse bites it soon at the hand of Lucky...which he probably does...before he can get the girl back.

I've been digging the original music of the 20s and 30s that plays during the end credits.

This week? Nothing but the continual sound of a record ending. Very cool.

I knew Van Alden would bite it violently somehow, but I was holding out hope that Chalky would ride off into the sunset. either way, bummer to lose them both like that.

as things are winding to a close, I'm starting to realize more what a fun ride it's been.

I'm very impressed with this season so far. Doesn't make up for seasons 3-4

Part of me realizes how good of a show its been but I cant get past some of the f-ups the show has had. Watching this season makes me look at seasons 3 and 4 and say WTF even more than I did after they were done.

I've been watching out of a sense of obligation since season 2, but the last few episodes reminded me of why I ever got into the show in the first place.

I'm rather disappointed that we only got to see this season of Capone in charge. Along with seeing him brought down by Ness rather quickly.

They really messed up with the last 2 seasons. It's very telling that they spent all that time setting up Hoover, the doctor, etc. as likely antagonists towards the end of last season, and they're either nonexistent or bit parts in this one. That's how badly off course they got.

Nice. Interesting about the height issue. They could have just put 6" lifts under the actor's shoes and nobody would have known.

That actor does a wonderful, over-the-top accent, especially considering he's British. But it sounds more New York than Chicago to me. Capone's wiki page explains that too.

Born in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City to Italian immigrants, Capone was a Five Points Gang member who became a bouncer in organized crime premises such as brothels. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago becoming bodyguard and trusted factotum for Johnny Torrio, head of a criminal syndicate illegally supplying alcohol.

Check out five interesting facts about Al Capone:

  1. Capone’s drink of choice was Templeton Rye whiskey from Templeton, Iowa.
  2. Capone’s specially-outfitted, bullet-proof Cadillac was seized by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1932 and later used by the government as Franklin Roosevelt’s limousine.
  3. Capone got his “Scarface” nickname after a bar brawl in Coney Island that left him with three large slashes on the left side of his face.
  4. Even though “Scarface” was his most well-known nickname, Capone’s closest friends called him “Snorky.”
  5. After suffering a mental and physical decline as a result of neurosyphilis, a Baltimore psychiatrist and Capone’s personal physician performed tests that showed his mental capability had diminished to that of a 12-year-old.

Hard to believe with characters like Capone, Luciano, Ness, Rothstein, Hoover and Lansky that you choose to build a series around Nucky Thompson. I know it was somewhat new ground but it was obvious early on where the audience's appetite was.

No doubt a series will be done again down the road say 10-20 years.

A John Dillinger series would be nice in the meantime.

I think telling the story from Nucky's perspective allowed the producers to give balanced attention to the other characters. Nucky is a pretty benign character; the interesting part of the show is the other stories. He's sort of the common denominator that allows the rest of the stories to be told.

I like Buscemi but I don't think he's acted the role all that well.

Finishing really strong. Even though we all know basically how this ends (in terms of Luciano and his crew), the story is pretty captivating.

Psyched for next week. They've tied up all the loose ends and get to focus on the things that everyone really cares about.

I am really enjoying the final season. But what the heck was with season 4? Pointless story lines for the most part.

Sad to see Mickey go. Guy defied the odds, until last night.

I'm a few episodes behind, but I don't really like how they're playing Capone. No idea how close to reality this is, but he seems like an overacted, cartoony psycho. Rothstein was my favourite of that circle of characters.

I like this season better than the last two, but this past episode was ham handed, forced, and the Jillian stuff seems to be out of nowhere.

What a waste of charcters and stories. I actually like Steve Buscemi as Nucky. I just think they spent way too much time over the course of the series on fictional charcters and meanderin storylines instead of going into what actually happened. It sure would have been nice to see Capone rise instead of Gyp choke himself.

Welcome to the last bunch of pages to this thread.

I actually really like this season so far, but I admit you need to go in with the understanding that the season is shortened. That was one of the worst standoffs in the history of TV ever but they needed to fast forward so they can wrap up next week.

It wouldn't have been so hard to have Luciano flank Nucky in the standoff. Kind of what happened in a prior season when Nucky used Chalky to flank someone.

Instead they did a lame exchange that would never happen. Served no purpose. Just lazy writing.

There was too much Jillian this season early for it not to end with a big connection back to Nucky.

Is it just them reuniting, or something else crazy...like finding out Jimmy is actually his son?

Looks like it's going to end with Macdonald getting a boatload of money on the short.
Yeah, maybe Nucky walks away from it with some money from the short also - that's really the only interesting loose end left for me. I wonder if the company he's shorting is one he owns. I can't find any info on Mayflower Grain, so I don't know if that was a real thing or not. I think MacDonald's character has been enjoyable this season - she's actually taken on some of Nucky's mannerisms too. A shame they wasted her for most of seasons 2, 3 and 4. This last episode wasn't so great, don't have high expectations for the finale.
