** OFFICIAL ** Cleveland Guardians thread - spring training (2 Viewers)

If it happens, probably will be Zimm/Fraz, Shef/Aik, low A guy.  If the Tribe can hold Sheffield and Aiken, I'll be stoked.  If they don't get Smith, there are plenty of RP available.  Maybe not for a top 100 guy too.

The Brewers’ haul would be at least three prospects, according to a source. The centerpiece would be 20-year-old, switch-hitting catcher Francisco Mejia, who currently sports a 42-game hitting streak across two Class A levels and is renowned for his arm. Yu-Cheng Chang, also 20 and at High-A, is a power-hitting shortstop expected to stick at the position. Greg Allen, 23, was recently promoted to Double-A and fits the mold of the team general manager David Stearns is trying to build, with athleticism and high on-base tendencies.

The Indians and Brewers have reached an agreement on a trade that will send Jonathan Lucroy to Cleveland, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The parameters of the deal have been set but nothing is official yet. Lucroy would have to waive his no-trade clause to complete the deal, though that shouldn't be a major obstacle as Lucroy has made it clear he wants to play for a contender. Right now, the two sides are exchanging medicals. Per Rosenthal, the Brewers will receive four players from Cleveland including top catching prospect Francisco Mejia. Minor league OF Greg Allen and SS Yu-Cheng Chang will also head to Milwaukee if the deal goes through.

Luuuuuuuuuuucccc . . . . I know the Brewers had to do it, but I'll be sad to see Lucroy go. One of my all-time favorite Brewers and a class act all around. I hope he wins a ring in Cleveland.

the thing I live is that that got players that aren't just 1 year rentals. Miller signed through 2018 and Lucroy has a 2017 club option. Just a casual BB fan but glad to see them go all in.

What a doosh...guess he likes playing on a team 15.5 back.
Does seem strange on his part. Always has been a class act. Locker room leader. Tons of work for charity in the Milwaukee area. Lots of work with veterans and the Honor Flights.

My guess is it had something to do with a new contract or voided the team option left in his current contract.

Seems highly unlikely to me they would enter free agent negotiations with him.
makes sense. thought maybe they could offer to renegotiate next year (remove the club option + a raise) or tack a year on with a bump in salary

like i said, just a casual BB fan so not sure how these things work.

Thank heavens Lucroy vetoed that deal. Take Yu and Mejia from my beloved Hillcats? Oh hell no!

I'm biased, but that's just too damn much talent for a 30 YO catcher that's never hit 20 bombs in a season. Especially along with the speedy Greg Allen (already sadly missed here in Lynchburg).

Being a minor league fan of contending team kind of sucks. I figured Bradley would be gone too, but that'd be fine. He's not going to be as good of a player as Santander anyway (shhhhhh.....don't tell anybody).

And seriously, you know what Lucroy will be in 2 years? A poor man's Mike Napoli. The same Mike Napoli on his 3rd team in 3 years. A great addition to CLE this year, obviously. A guy they got cheap because old, solid OBP guys with some pop, but no defensive position of note can usually be had pretty cheaply.

So, the Indians were about to give 3 solid young players to rent a poor man's Napoli? Best case, you give up those players for nothing and then let him walk. Worst case, you end up giving him a big stupid contract right before the crash. Sounds like something the Yankees would've done a few years ago.

Good points, @pollardsvision. I'm not too worked up over it. On the radio, Hamilton was saying not only did he want the option dropped, he wanted a new deal and to be guaranteed #1 catcher time going forward. Sounds like Lucroy was full of demands, glad they walked away. Their offer was for 1+ years of lucroy, not a 3 month rental.

I was disappointed to see the SS in the deal actually. I've heard good stuff going all the way back to last season.

As far as Meija goes, how much does his rise to prospect lore come from the 40+ game hitting streak? He was barely a blip on my radar coming into the season.

Re: Bradley- just won't make enough contact as he moves up the ladder or something else you see too? What's a Santander?

Well, it's really hard to say with Bradley, but he definitely appears to be a strikeout machine. I could just be biased as he's been in a pretty big slump for over a month now. He seems like your pretty prototypical lefty 1B K-happy bomber. It's beautiful when he's on. I really have no idea how he'll develop though. Power is real. If he can make consistent contact, he'll be a nice player. I'm excited to see if he can break out of this slump. I assume the Indians are waiting for it too, before they send him to Akron.

Anthony Santander is an OF/1B guy that looks, to me, like a more well-rounded version of Bradley. Some good pop, a better contact hitter, and athletic enough to play OF in a pinch (Bradley definitely is not). I had never heard of him coming into the season and Bradley was making all the noise early, but Santander is coming on of late. Or moreso, he's really just been chugging along, relatively quietly, producing all season. If it matters, he certainly "looks" the part moreso than Bradley.

I haven't seen as much of Mejia. Nice arm behind the plate. Really, really short.  No power that I've seen, and of course, he's gotten a hit in every game I've seen him in. I think his prospect status was fairly high before too and he's always been young for his level, which plays into it.

And yes, I believe Indians fans everywhere will one day celebrate the fact that they didn't trade away Yu Cheng-Chang.

Was just looking at something. I got them at 23-23 against teams that are currently .500 or better. And they are 11-1 against Detroit so they are 12-22 against .500 teams that aren't Detroit.

Seriously? It's August 1st and this is the most optimistic I've been about the team since 2007. This one doesn't compare to 1995 team who smashed everyone during the regular season. Solid SP, upgraded bully, strong offense, decent defense; that's a combination that can go far.

I'm not planning the World Series victory parade, but I am enjoying the ride.

Any chance they go after a C or power hitter before the deadline?  Love the Miller trade this weekend, but the bottom of the lineup is a little worrisome.

BREAKING: Indians acquire OF Brandon Guyer from Tampa Bay for OF Nathan Lukes, and RHP Jhonleider Salinas.

Not what I was expecting, but a good situational player.

With Uribe DFA'd, I'm assuming Ramirez goes to 3B with a Platoon in OF?  So nothing new there...along with the struggling C?  The bottom of the lineup still has me worried.  Naquin is a good hitter, but it'd be nice if there was some insurance around him.  Plus I hate thinking "automatic out" when the C position is up to bat.

C. Santana, 1BJ. Kipnis, 2BF. Lindor, SSM. Napoli, DHJ. Ramirez, 3BL. Chisenhall, RFT. Naquin, CFA. Almonte, LFR. Perez, C

I would expect Chiz/Guyer to platoon RF since each has strengths to a certain side of the plate (Chiz to RHP & Guyer to LHP). Personally, I would rather have shot Almonte into the sun. He has all the baseball smarts of a Frenchman who is playing the game for the first time. :yucky:

Almonte is ineligible in the postseason, so while I don't mind the Guyer move I kinda wish we had 2 small moves up our sleeves instead of 1. I have no faith that Brantley will play again this year. With Uribe gone, it's gonna be Naquin and Rajai pretty much everyday. Maybe Zimmer provides a spark in Sept/Oct.

Who is Jonah Heim? We couldn't have gotten Pearce and Guyer if that was the cost?

Oof. Nice debut by Miller (gave up bomb to soft hitting lefty Joe Mauer).

This better work because Frazier will be very good (that bat's fast as hell). I like Sheffield a lot too, but as a solid young pitcher without completely overwhelming stuff, who the hell knows what'll become of him.

I do think Santander's emergence gives them a little leeway dealing Frazier. I hate to even type this, but he has the body of .285-25 type of guy. Just looks like the kind of guy that'll give you solid power with contact skills, and of course, this year has some results to support that notion. He's not a speed OF by any means, but he did end the game tonight with a beautiful diving catch of a liner-ish ball down the left field foul line.

There's also Taylor Murphy, too, that most people probably haven't heard of. Smaller guy that's been raking, for the most part all year. A little pop too.

Zimmer now really needs to come through, but if he doesn't, there's options behind him.

Mejia extended to 43 game tonight, btw. Somewhere in the neighborhood of Top 10 all-time (major and minor combined). Gunned down a base stealler too. You guys will really be glad, next year, when you aren't having to ##### about Lucroy's old ### blocking Mejia. Speaking of hit streaks, did you guys know that DeMaggio also has the 2nd longest minor league hit streak (61 games)? I thought that was pretty cool.

Ruh-roh: Salazar to get preautionary MRI

CLEVELAND-- The worry surrounding Danny Salazar and his ailing elbow is real.

After allowing six runs and three homers over two innings in his shortest big league start on Monday, Salazar will get a precautionary MRI on his elbow Tuesday, according to manager Terry Francona.

"He obviously doesn’t look like himself the last couple games," Francona said. "Hopefully, (it's) nothing and then we can move forward and I think Danny can relax a little bit and if there’s a need to look at it further, we can. I just think that makes sense because the last couple of outings, he hasn’t been himself.”

Salazar, who's posted an 11-4 record with a sub-three ERA all season, has allowed 21 runs over his last 24 innings of work and admitted that he has concern about what he's feeling.

"There's something in my elbow," Salazar said. "I just want to find out and to know what it is that I have in there, so I can get the right treatment here, and I can feel better."

The 26-year-old All-Star had Tommy John in 2010, but indicated that this soreness feels nothing like what he felt prior to that surgery.

"Totally different," Salazar said. "The ligament is right. Everything in that part of the elbow is fine -- totally fine."
Please, please, please let this be nothing.

Wow tough call upheld there in RF. Looked like Chis had it. Frame by frame, one view looked no catch and one looked catch. If it was ruled an out originally, it probably stays an out.
