Yahoo! News picked up this Bloomberg piece today:

China Concealed Extent of Virus Outbreak, U.S. Intelligence Says

Mike Pence said something interesting on CNN today:

“The reality is that we could have been better off if China had been more forthcoming,” Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday on CNN. “What appears evident now is that long before the world learned in December that China was dealing with this, and maybe as much as a month earlier than that, that the outbreak was real in China.
Dr. Deborah Birx, as well:

Deborah Birx, the State Department immunologist advising the White House on its response to the outbreak, said Tuesday that China’s public reporting influenced assumptions elsewhere in the world about the nature of the virus.

The medical community made -- interpreted the Chinese data as: This was serious, but smaller than anyone expected,” she said at a news conference on Tuesday. “Because I think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data, now that what we see happened to Italy and see what happened to Spain.

When our kids were little, a temp of 104 for any length of time was a reason to throw them in an ice bath to try to get down. 106 cooks stuff pretty quick in children.
Just an FYI and PSA:

Fever like that isn't dangerous.  Yes, even above 104.  Our bodies won't allow temps to get high enough to cause harm.  Unless temps are getting raised due to an outside source (like being stuck in a hot car), the height of the fever isn't harmful.

There's no need for ice baths for your little ones for high fevers.  We bring fever down with medicine to help kids feel more comfortable.  Putting them in an ice bath completely defeats that purpose.

As to what was posted above, it's pretty unlikely it was truly 106.  But glad to hear he's doing better and home.

I got to Costco early. They were letting 60 and older in from 8:00 am - 9:00 am and the rest in at 9:00am. I got in line at 8:30am with maybe 75-100 people in front of me. By 9:00 am the line had doubled and I was super glad I got there early. They would only allow so many in at a time, I was held up right at the entrance for maybe 2 mins? As you enter it was like a train had formed that led directly to TP. They had employees there that just dropped a package in your cart as you walked by. With the risks these people are taking I thought they did really well. I got what I needed and got out of there and back home. People were being cool and respecting the 6' space for the most part.  Lots of folks with masks and gloves.

I did get unemployment paperwork in the mail. This does make me feel better as they send no electronic info that you did it correctly when I signed up. I qualify for the max which was $200.00 and something a week. I saw nothing on there about an extra $600.00 being tacked on which would really help. While in Costco I did restock on vodka. Kirkland brand vodka which really is not that bad.

Only thing I could not find at Costco were eggs. They had some high dollar organic eggs but I passed on that.

I believe the 600 is applied by each state and none have applied it yet, from what I’ve read

Glad you got your unemployment info. I think they don't mention 600 a week on top because they don't know when it'll actually reach people's hands whereas ui from the state is a known how it works.

It's not a black and white issue. It's a matter of degree.

If 10% of the people change their behavior and  become savers instead of spenders, that will result in the post-COVID-19 economy being drastically different than the pre-COVID-19 economy. The same holds true if overall (100%) people buy 9 Starbucks lattes per month instead of the 10 they were buying before.

I have no doubt that the vast majority of people will return to their old spending habits. The problem is, to return to the economy we had before requires 100% to return and all of them to return to 100% of what they were doing before. That's not going to happen. The question is, how much different is it going to be?
Oh sure, I wasn't implying it was a all or nothing situation. Just commenting that I think the vast majority will be unchanged, as you seem to agree. But sure, that incremental loss will end up making a difference in the medium term. The question is whether those short/medium changes hold over the long term. I think we've seen in the past that people tend to revert to their "mean behavior" the longer the time frame. You also have the younger generations growing up without realizing the same lessons since they are not as aware of the financial issues at this age. Finally, there's the thought that this changes our economy in a way that "makes up" for some of the consumer savers. What if we moved back toward more of a manufacturing society and took back some of the "revenue" that we send to China and other countries? That would help the economy and possibly give people better, more secure jobs, leading to more consumer spending.

Clearly no way to know for sure and it's an interesting conversation. But I would certainly agree that anyone that thinks we'll be right back to the same consumer habits, spending, economy, stock market, etc in a year or two are likely to be disappointed.

Co-workers wife has Alzheimers. He's retired military and they live a couple miles away from NAS JAX. Her main hobby was bingo games on base. Several times a week she'd play. Base has shut down bingo for 2 to 3 weeks now. He says that she has really gone downhill in the meantime and sleeping up to 16 hours a day.

He says that he's tried to keep her occupied with other games or walks but she just isn't interested in them.

I feel so badly for him after seeing my FIL go through Parkinson's.
Maybe Zoom bingo is an option... somebody's gotta be doing it.

suburbia.  It's always at a medium level.  I mean, the stores are never vacant but it's not too hard to steer clear of everyone else.

Spreading to everyone else is my major concern.  If we have even the slightest suspicion that the has it, we shouldn't be going anywhere.
The last time I saw you was in our grocery store. Hoping not to see you there again for a bit....  :oldunsure:

Not to be all about the numbers, but California is doing a pretty darn good job all things considered. Keep it up CA.
I have to say, I'm proud to be a Californian. Our governor is awesome. He and the governor of WA state are mentioned even by the president with kudos for acting early. CA is the leader on a lot of stuff.

Then you have Florida that finally did what they should have done when we did it just based on the elderly population. I hope Florida's governor is kicked out. Terrible and how many lives are going to be lost because of this ###.  :(

You sure about that one? Im no Dr, but I get real worried when the temps go above 104 and the Dr's have told us in the past to use cold compresses to help bring it down when they do. My 3yo nephew recently had a seizure when his temperature suddenly spiked to 105. Dr's said it was because of the sudden increase. Scary stuff. Not sure Id be so nonchalant about a fever above 104.

What is scary is that Italy's high "death/known cases rate" is starting to be approached by other countries. We are at 2% right.... but so were they.
This is the thing no one ever really talks about.  If China WAS lying, (and i'm not saying they were, just saying there are many who believe that) would it then be possible that we have completely undershot the lethal nature of this virus?

You're right. I'm proud of Gov. Cuomo's response recently but NY and NYC waited too long. CA and WA did better. Everyone should take note in every state and lock it down fast and hard.

Yes, I'm sure about that one.

As for your nephew, some kids have febrile seizures (seizures caused by fever) but the exact reason why is unknown.  It's possible it's the sudden increase, but that's not the case for all.

Here's some fever myths for you to review if you don't want to believe me.  From there:

MYTH. Fevers above 104° F (40° C) are dangerous. They can cause brain damage.

FACT. Fevers with infections don't cause brain damage. Only temperatures above 108° F (42° C) can cause brain damage. It's very rare for the body temperature to climb this high. It only happens if the air temperature is very high. An example is a child left in a closed car during hot weather.

I like how Cuomo explains things, very detailed while being calming in his voice. I hope his bro gets through it with just mild symptoms. He's a day in now.

I'm not ready to sing the praises of California just yet.

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/03/next-covid-19-testing-crisis/609193/

If this article is accurate, they STILL have a massive testing problem in California.
The Atlantic? Never heard of that rag.

Where I am, no shortages. My 93 year old friend's  mother got tested no problem. The test turn around time is the issue. But kudos to all our companies working on everything from injecting antibodies to tests, etc. No state has more companies small to large working on this crisis. Wouldn't bode well if we had managed to secede from the union as many had wanted here.

we let my sister in-law and her boyfriend stay with us since they both lost their jobs. They’re going 2-3 times a week ?!

Holy cats! How old is his mother?

Maybe the population increase will help chew up some of that spending drop-off.

The 4th of July may be the breaking point for many that will insist on getting out (and inevitably being among crowds).  Even if it doesn't make sense then...we'll see.
Depends on what happens between now and then IMO.  By waiting so long to do anything substantive I think it makes compliance down the road more likely.  What's happening between now and July may scare us all straight.

Newsom on CNN

Virus peak to be early to mid May here.

Message to other governors, issue stay at home now. What are you waiting for?

CA was socialised early on back in January with taking in flights and the princess ship and quarantining folks. That seems to help withwhy we are doing pretty well with following  orders.

Testing results turn around is the issue.

Stanford doing 3D printing for supplies needed for the test kits.

Acknowledges Trump has helped us. We all want more. Important to have a good relationship.

I'm guessing why WA state is fairing pretty well too. That nursing home outbreak was there so it was in that state's backyard.

Still don't get it. English isn't my first language. So #### off on being critical in this crisis thread.
Not to mention I take meds that make my brain foggy. That's no secret. But people want to continue to be #######s and even here in this thread where we're supposed to help each other. Wow.

English is dumb. I think you meant to say "my friend's 93 year old mother."

Because if your 93 year old friend has a mother who is still alive, then said mother would be realllllly old.

Where the #### were you 20 years ago? My daughter had a lot of fevers when she was real young, most never above 102 but occasionally would get up to 104 and she'd be ready to ##### the poor child if the Motrin didn't kick in.

Not sure but I think at home because it sounds like everything has been better since they go to the hospital.
A lot of folks are using those automated forehead thermometers and such these days and they always seem off to me. The old school mercury oral thermometers, while unsanitary as hell, at least seemed to give accurate readings.

It might not kill you, but 104 is going to be a miserable experience.  I used to get just brutal strep every 18 months or so through my 20s and I got to be a fever connoisseur.  Up to 100.5 is no big deal.  There to 101.5 and you definitely feel ####ty.  But 102 to 103 is horrible.  Getting out of bed to do anything for five minutes is hard.

I don't remember? Why, am I in trouble again?

Sorry, GB. I know it's too late now, but I tried :)
Dude every time I look at your picture I laugh, all good. You're never in trouble, unless you're stepping out on Grue of course.

Luckily we never got to that point so the child was saved a tortuous ice bath for apparently no reason.

Once a week as a light shop mostly for produce.

California schools closed for the remainder of the school year. All education will be conducted online while at home.
Not shocking.  Our kids go through June so no sense in bringing them back for a month or whatever.

We already got one Chromebook, picking the second up tomorrow.

God bless my wife who's been the one leading the charge on keeping the kids in a learning environment.  I am considered "essential" so I'm at my deserted office M-F from 8-4.
