The parents are probably the one throwing the party as they are over it by this point thinking that this pandemic is completely overblown. Not saying I agree  - just explaining the logic from the conversations I have had with folks, including a neighbor who threw a bash for 30 last weekend - this is NE ohio FWIW. 

 
A friend down in Redondo took some photos of a bar that had opened their patio. It was PACKED shoulder to shoulder. ZERO masks visible. Wouldn't know anything had been going on.

I'll look for the tweet again, but the S. Korea night club spreader had crazy spread, but they were able to contain it. Guess how many tests it took? 46,000. We're not capable of doing that.

Yup. I'm definitely starting to see fewer and fewer masks here. I think many people assume it's all good now that things are officially opening up.

 
Covid worldometers - reporting over 95,000 new cases and over 4,200 deaths.  Once again, the U.S. (23,600), Brazil (15,000), and Russia (9,200) represent half of those new cases.  We'll see which way things tilt.  If those three continue to show 45-50K new cases a day, will the numbers coming from other countries grow?  And without widespread testing in so many (all?) countries, what will the numbers look like as summer moves on?

We use Harris.  Meyer has been down there forever, so they're a good one.  Not really familiar with the others.

Why are we even worrying about nursing home deaths?  It's just a bunch of old people that aren't contributing members of society.  The poor ones are just a drain, and the richer ones are giving their money to nursing homes instead of their next of kin.  Nursing homes are where people go to die, so just get it over with already, to make room for the next batch of residents.  This virus is actually doing a good job for the long term outlook for social security.

In my weekly sojourn into the city this morning & walking around at lunchtime it was still 100%. In Brooklyn the only ones without masks are a subset of young males, either solo runners or small groups of guys. Even then they often have bandannas or masks around their neck. You cannot enter any store without one.

Well Asian countries were wearing masks with regularity BEFORE Covid.  Czech republic took to mask wearing and social distancing quite well.  Germany seems to have done just about everything right, but not sure how much of that is the citizenry vs. the leadership, testing, etc. I guess there's always Brazil if you are looking for a comp to make you feel better.

Appropos of nothing you wrote, I said early on that I thought the US would fair badly when compared to other first world nations.  Italy and Spain obviously still have sizable per capita leads, so we'll see how that ends up over the next 6 months when the several week diff at the start makes far less difference.

Wow.  It takes a certain callousness and egotism to think that.  Not sure I even know how to describe the person who says it out loud.  Ghandi said that "the true measure of any society is how it treats its most vulnerable members.

Maybe the solution to restaurants enticing workers back who are making more on unemployed and facing reduced tips due to lower capacity operations is to change the model: pay workers a living wage, increase prices, eliminate tipping.  Seems that now might be the right time to make that shift if you are a restaurant owner trying to:

  • Entice workers back
  • Explain to your patrons a new pricing policy that makes lower capacity somewhat feasible (ie break even in the near term)

Also on tipping I've had friends who work in places where they share tips with co workers and the owner gets a % of it as well which is total BS. Waiters and Waitresses get minimum wage if that and make most of their money on tips which I think a lot of people don't realize. I tip wherever I go I might tip more for better service too.

We're not going back to that. That said, the PS5 you're contemplating is not a bad "we're staying home more" purchase. I won't bat an eye at buying the new Xbox when it drops.

The thing with PS5 is it's something I'm gonna use anyway if I'm working or not . I can get most of the streaming services such as HBO, Amazon, Netflix on it already so even when I'm not playing a game it's going to get used no matter what. Plus given we don't know how long this will last and I've made some extra money over the past few months it's something I was gonna save up for anyway 

And yes over the last few months I realized how much useless money I was spending going out to eat or to movies. My buddy will probably want to spend as he has no control but I've done better. I ordered new gloves for stocking at work and some jeans and some t-shirts but thats it on my online stuff.

Don't know if they even knew I was there.  They were a couple of twenty-somethings.  Great quote, BTW.  Both my parents have been gone for years, but my mom's sister is pushing 85, and it sucks that I can't visit her.  I mean, I could, but I won't.  She lives in senior housing and is willing to have us come over, but no way I am risking being asymptomatic.

This is common knowledge. I'm pretty sure that literally everyone, or at least the vast, vast majority realize it. 

However, if servers don't think they're getting paid enough, or the owner takes a cut, I would recommend they quit and work elsewhere, otherwise there's no incentive for change.

I absolutely promote mask wearing. Yes, the part of his story where they don’t wear PPE in the hospital is weird. But I can see the overall perspective though with case numbers like that in a county.

I can’t blame these people. They’ve had their senior year of high school ruined, their graduation, their prom (it matters to a lot of people), and likely their first year of college all screwed up. It sucks they are being irresponsible now but most did their part and paid an emotional price.

While some are being irresponsible, we have to remember, these are kids around 17 years old.  Ham mentioned his 4 & 9 year olds, but at those ages, kids still listen (for the most part).  How many 17 year olds are gonna stay in the house for months when their parents tell them to?  Especially when they consider themselves invincible.  I don't know the exact number of teenage deaths in the US, but in my state (CT), we have the 3rd highest death rate (behind only NY & NJ), and no recorded teenage deaths.  It's like trying to lecture your son on abstinence when he is dating a supermodel, or wearing a helmet while driving... in a car.  Remember also, these kids very likely don't know a single teenager who has even gotten seriously ill with this virus.  Let's say your kid goes hang with their friends, and promises to social distance and keep their mask on.  How long will that last when they are out of your sight?

Yep. My son is really struggling right now so I mostly took the shackles off him.

We aren’t in any more trouble than we were a month ago, at least if you are taking necessary precautions.  I could give a #### all what people do because I’m not taking those risks and am staying home. I understand I am fortunate to work from home but hopefully those who can’t can space themselves out and wear a mask. If people who are ignoring this catch it, well I am long past the point of sympathy and am almost at the point of Darwinism now.

Talk to someone in HR. They should know what is going on.

I have been called back in to work for some project stuff. I expressed my concern to them about scewing up my unemployment. Not because I don't want to work, but was concerned if they call me back but then lay me off again, didn't know about any lag in unemployment and what not. And at least here in MN, if you colect one cent from state unemployment (that is if you go back to work but make one cent less than what you would from unemployment) you still qualify for the federal money. Thus she told me that I could work X # of hours and still be good.

It is amazing how many people like to play Russian roulette.  This group includes my own mother, who refuses to stay home and continues to see visitors everyday.

Oh that's right, I forgot that we are America and thus incapable of learning from other countries. Hell, given your comment on this specific topic and others' comments on related topics I'm beginning to think we Americans aren't just incapable of learning from other countries, but that we don't even know those other countries exist.  After all, no way we could've seen this virus coming after it: decimated Wuhan THEN brought China to it's knees THEN sent off alarm bells throughout Asia THEN ravaged Europe THEN...we were fine, no biggie for US because we are different and what happens elsewhere has no impact on the US.  Yeah, I like your world better too.  Unfortunately it isn't the one we live in.

At risk of getting political, the problem with conservatives is that they can't imagine the world any other way than the way it is now.  The problem with progressives is that they are far too idealistic when imagining that new world.  I don't think that last statement is unfair for this forum as it isn't "political" in the sense of parties and I think most everyone can agree with it even as they draw the lines in different places.  Anyway, happy to delete it if it deemed inappropriate, but did feel it was worth adding.

Sure. It was just part of the interview that I gave cliff notes for. I'm just relaying what he said.

He said he personally wouldn't fly right now. Said a noted virologist thought he became infected after flying and wearing gloves and mask. I don't think he's making any broad statements. Just what he'd do. And I certainly am not making any statements. I just summarized what he said on the podcast.

This is a silly rant. 

Your suggestion was for restaurant owners to charge more money because their employees want to stay home while collecting a benefit that pays them more than their wage. 

All at a time that restaurant owners will be struggling to get people in the door and put food on their own tables. 

Its a really terrible suggestion that has nothing to do with politics or other countries.

Yup. Yesterday was my first day back at work since our official opening for curbside with limited capacity for people to enter our shop for dropoffs and pickups only.   I probably had to give out 5-6 surgical masks to people who tried to enter without face coverings.  Many people are confusing the re-opening of some of our economy as marking the "beginning of the end" of covid. This could not be farther from the truth.  The only reason our economy is starting  to re-open is because of the economic dire we faced because our entire government (I'm not making this political--anybody and everybody in charge could have done better or more regardless of what party they are with) failed to take this thing seriously enough to pay proper attention to it early.   People were taking the virus more seriously and were being more careful when they were locked down at home than they are now--which is extremely dangerous.  

I've said it before much earlier in this thread--but for the love of god--and for the love of our communities--please take this thing seriously and be careful.  We cannot trust our government with our health--we can only trust ourselves.   I want to make clear that I'm not saying this in a political way at all--but even if you don't like or don't believe in wearing masks--please just take one for the team.  Most small businesses were decimated by this thing--and keep in mind--if there is an exposure to the virus in a small business--that could cause another 2+ weeks of quarantine for those employees and that business.  That literally could be the nail in the coffin for a lot of them.  Regardless of your political affiliations--please be classy enough to not put peoples lives and livelihoods in jeopardy over something that is literally a temporary minor inconvenience.

I agree.

We were in trouble in March. We are in trouble now. Nothing has changed. 

The last two months on my social media feed has been like the script of the movie The Mist. Even tying a rope around those that want to go out isn't going to help them. 

 
Not sure if this has been posted yet but Study about masks and particles emitted during speaking. Saw this tweet today which made me look and I think that is the study. 

I have no idea how anybody could watch that and come away thinking masks are useless. 

Even if somebody is wearing one that doesnt cover the nose and they touch it a lot, it would still be blocking what you see there.

I am in the Orlando airport even as we speak. It’s a ghost town and there is a high degree of compliance on the mask wearing front. The plane is going to be about half full. Will wear a mask the whole time and I have liberal amounts of hand sanitizer at my disposal.
