I had posted 100 pages or so ago that I manage a facility that ships wine and spirits across upstate NY. No real possibility to work from home when it's your guys actually handling the cases. My boss still thinks this is "like a cold" though corporate has taken a decided turn over the past 2 days. Still, my day starts with getting 50 guys together to ensure they don't have delivery problems. Risk mitigation and social distancing is decidedly pointed towards the sales teams. Need the job for health insurance (single income family of 5). There are at least a couple suspected cases in my area.

Distribution becomes an issue if drivers/associates stay home.

Hang in there. I’m on day 8, I’ve gone out of the house a couple of times but didn’t contact another person. It’s not that bad so far, but I don’t live in the city so that may be easy for me to say. I’m planning on doing this for as long as it takes, and hoping that it’s only another 4 weeks or so. I realize it could be longer.

 
Finally, this is the message our President should be sharing. Thank you.

I look at this as an optimistic inflection point.

Luckily we live out of the city theses days so we can get out into nature with the kids. But they are missing friends but no one wants to play.

Thinking outside the box is smart right now. Dollar stores, drug stores, hardware stores gas station markets, etc all have a higher chance of having these supplies than grocery stores at the moment IMO.

Ah, national news outlets. There is the usual smattering of market talk, but there are very clear messages of "shaking hands is often reflexive, but we shouldn't be doing it" and "if you don't have to travel I wouldn't."

Talked about how good it was to work together, how we all have to help each other get better by doing these things.

Stood behind local businesses, local governments and sports leagues in their decisions to shut down.

If anyone is a substitute teacher or know someone who is, would love to know if they will still get paid like everyone else. It wasn't clear in this press conference. 

 
First case here in Ithaca was confirmed today.

Schools all closed yesterday for the next month (the last week was spring break anyway).

The schools are still giving out free meals to kids that need them, but this is also a cool response I just saw via email from a business doing something more than "cleaning our restaurant":

Wings Over

If a school closure or other situation is preventing your child from being fed, please count on us and bring them to our restaurants. We will feed them for free.*

Current Participating Locations Include: Athens, College Park, Columbus, Ithaca, Happy Valley, Knoxville, South Bend, and Springfield. 

*One (1) free kids meal will be provided per child per day. Offer valid in store only - cannot be pre-ordered. No cash value. Valid at participating locations.

And I don't think it's just to sell more chicken to adults, because they earlier said they are limiting contact by only doing pre-orders and electronic payments for paid orders and no dining in (just delivery and pickup).

 
Italy reports 3,497 new cases and 175 new deaths.

I suppose yesterday's slight drop was just an aberration.  Sad for Italy, sad for the world.  We needed a win there.  I'm still hopeful that their quarantine measures will soon show a drop in cases.  We really need to see that.

 
Secretary Azar being missing from the conference wasn't really answered. Odds he's not feeling well. Why aren't they saying asymptomatic people can pass this virus?

On thursday, we got an email from the school which said this:

When would school closures be considered for the Coronavirus

  •  If we were notified by the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control that a student or students in a school had tested positive for the Coronavirus, we would work with DHEC to identify those students who may have been exposed to the virus.

    Those students may, depending on their circumstances, be asked to self-quarantine for a period as prescribed by SC DHEC.
  •  If the exposure was very widespread, the school district may exercise an option to close schools for an extended period of time as recommended by SC DHEC.

[*]Currently, our schools are not approved as a pilot for virtual learning in the state of South Carolina. Six school districts throughout the state are participating in a virtual learning pilot program.

[*]Our district has set up an exploration group to explore the use of virtual learning with our Chromebooks in grades 3 through 12, if the state of South Carolina granted us an emergency waiver to implement such. At this time virtual learning is not possible in Lancaster County School District without the state board action and approval.

The contents of this plan are constantly being updated and revised based on the latest information we receive in regards to the Coronavirus. Please continue to follow the district’s website and social media pages for the most up-to-date information regarding our response to the Coronavirus.

The very next day (yesterday), both of my kids come home saying someone in their class saying someone had corona virus.  Now, kids (especially my kids) are prone to embellishment and pushing half-truths so you have to take everything they say with a gain of salt.  However, the very next day (Friday, yesterday) we got the notice linked above: they shut down schools specifically in Lancaster and Kershaw counties only.

Corona has been confirmed in Kershaw (next county south) for a while now, and we have had one reported Lancaster case (linked to Kershaw) for a few days.  The sudden about-face from the governor makes me think that there is more out there than we are being told, and/or there is a case in the school system - student or faculty.

#### got real pretty quickly yesterday.

(NYT Opinion) There’s a Giant Hole in Pelosi’s Coronavirus Bill - The legislation passed by the House Friday night doesn’t actually guarantee paid sick leave to most American workers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi early Saturday celebrated passage of legislation she described as providing paid sick leave to American workers affected by the coronavirus.

She neglected to mention the fine print.

In fact, the bill guarantees sick leave only to about 20 percent of workers. Big employers like McDonald’s and Amazon are not required to provide any paid sick leave, while companies with fewer than 50 employees can seek hardship exemptions from the Trump administration.

“If you are sick, stay home,” Vice President Mike Pence said at a news conference on Saturday afternoon. “You’re not going to miss a pay check.”

But that’s simply not true. Sick workers should stay home, but there is no guarantee in the emergency legislation that most of them will get paid.

The White House and congressional Republicans, who insisted on the exemptions as the price of bipartisan support for the legislation, bear the primary responsibility for the indefensible decision to prioritize corporate profits in the midst of a public health emergency.

Instead of pressing executives to support a comprehensive sick leave law, President Trump held a Rose Garden pep rally for corporate America on Friday afternoon, showering praise on the chief executives of big employers including Walmart, Target and Walgreens.

But House Democrats also failed to act in the public interest. Paying sick workers to stay at home is both good policy and good politics. Why not pass a bill that required all employers to provide paid sick leave and then force Republicans to explain their objections to the public?

The bill does require some employers to provide full-time workers with up to 10 days of paid leave. But the requirement does not apply to the nation’s largest employers — companies with 500 or more workers, who together employ roughly 54 percent of all workers.

Makes me think that we're going to try to print ourselves out of this...sick time...payroll tax cut...suspending federal student loan interest.

All while rates are almost 0. Feels like a perfect inflationary environment as we recover.

Unfortunately, I think those that feel this is what should be happening here will see what the results of that course of action will be in the UK. Trump hasn't been perfect but I generally like what he's been doing. I can't imagine what would be happening if he went this route.

Boris really seems to be going out of his way to trash the UK economy for decades to come. I can't figure out why

 
I have to ask all the FBG hoarders, what exactly  are you doing with the eggs? I mean, they don't last indefinitely and I don't think you can freeze them. Yet people in SA are to the point of ripping them right out of the chicken's asses. I REALLY don't get this one.
