I thought about going in since everyone else is working from home.

The initial test run of massive numbers of people working from home has been a failure thus far.  Signed on very early today, did some early email work, then got knocked off my connection at 8am due to a "network issue" and haven't been able to get back on since.
Oh man IT dudes probably crapping their pants (not from corona). Good luck to you and your company.

Do not do this.

One last warning - we are not going to turn on each other here.

If we can't keep from doing that, people won't be allowed to post here.

I hate that as I truly want us to all be together on this. But if a few people are ruining it for everyone else, we'll be forced to limit who can post.
Joe. See what he did I added it to the end of my post.

Since you seem to agree with DiBlasio here, what is the reason you called him a joke in another thread and demanded his removal?
Please let's do less of the "gotcha" type posts like this where the focus seems to be on criticizing another poster.

Let's take a break and stop trying to win debate points and instead focus on how we help each other.

My post wasn’t meant to be a “gorcha”; I have no interest in that. I was honestly trying to understand what the basis of his criticism was.

:bye:

Here at work too (only one other co-worker today).
I'll be in the office by 8amish PST.

First 2 hours will be listening to Costco shopping stuff and people talking about how crazy it is.

I think I can make it through about 5 minutes of this before headphones go on.

And let's do that in our day to day lives, not just FBG forums.

We don't all have to be politicians 24/7.

Changing the tone in America isn't going to come from the top down. It's their JOBS for politicians to be cruel to each other. We can all chose to give each other some grace and breathing room in our day to day lives.

From a personal perspective, wouldn’t it be “best” to expose to the virus quickly... if you indeed get sick, There is still ample capacity in the health system should things progress poorly.

Obviously you’d like to not get infected period - but if you knew you were going to, certainly seems far less risk to do so before the system is overwhelmed.

Just game theorying this a bit as I continue to rejigger my thoughts on things (still cautious, living life but trying to be smart, and certainly be vigilant).
This might have been a good strategy a week or two ago, I think you’re too late now.

What you did was not helpful in any way shape or form. If you can't see that, stop posting.

I truly don't have time to argue this with you.
Wow. That’s fine Joe. It wasn’t my intent to be unhelpful, and I didn’t call anyone a virus, but since you seem to believe I am the source of the problem here I’ll just leave it alone.

As I wrote earlier, thank you for your email. I read it to my family. They have no idea who you are or what this website is, but they also appreciated it.

Are some people buying large quantities of things? Or are shelves being emptied by the sheer volume of people buying.
My wife and I went Saturday morning, our normal shopping day, but a little earlier than usual. We were able to get everything we needed but milk. Just fresh fruits and veggies and the normal other stuff. The cashier said it was the first reasonable order she had in three days.
me:  thanks to footballguys, I’ve been prepping for weeks.
her: 😐😑😐

my wife: 🙄

me:  😁

Couple of questions I’ve had and will but throw them out there for anyone to answer:

1. I’m assuming that you can have the flu and COVID-19 at the same time, no?
2. Is there some kind of determining factor(s) on when someone gets a mild case vs. a severe case?  Like if you are exposed for longer and to more people or is it just kind of random - if you are exposed at all it can be mild to severe?
I am three pages back and I have no idea if anyone answered you. Responses:

1. Simultaneous infection with flu and COVID is possible, but likely to be rare. @Terminalxylem went into this last week. I believe that one of the factors that limits double infection is that immune reactions to one infection (mucus secretion, etc.) will tend to block off the other virus' means of ingress.

2. The answer is, generally, "not that we're aware" ... but I can think of one big factor that normally gets glossed over: viral load exposure -- simply the sheer number of viruses exposed to over a given time period. This typically occurs in healthcare workers and those caring for COVID patients at home -- these folks get exposed repeatedly over a relatively brief time period. When you read accounts of young healthy doctors and nurses succumbing to COVID ... high viral load exposure is what turns their potentially mild cases into critical ones.

China CDC Situation Report on Mar-15
31 Provinces & XPCC
  Suspected: 134 (+41)
  Confirmed: 80860 (+16)
  Severe: 3032 (-194)
  Dead: 3213 (+14)
  Recovered: 67749 (+838)
Close contacts traced: 680462 and 9582 still under medical observation
“Imported” from other countries - Confirmed: 123 (+12)
Hong Kong - Confirmed: 148 (Dead: 4, Recovered: 84)
Macau - Confirmed: 10 (Recovered: 10)
Taiwan - Confirmed: 59 (Dead: 1, Recovered: 20)
Look at those insane tracing numbers.  That is what will stop the spread.  Massive testing and tracing.  It will also quell fears as people will know what is going on.  Nationwide social distancing efforts will help but wish we were doing this tracing at this point (or had test kits to even try it).

And that's one of 13 pinch points. Sadly I don't have a solution but I've got to believe there was/is a better way to handle returning folks from the world without exposing them to the virus like this.

Just my opinion but I'm willing to bet there is at least 100 people in that crowd that have the virus and have now potentially infected 5-600 more. All heading home to their families to infect them and so on and so on. Think a mandatory quarantine of all those folks for 14 days should be in place but then we'll hear from the "but mah freedom" crowd. Like I said, this is going to require tough decisions at the village/town/city level for us to get ahead of it.

Let's just see how that tweet from the CDC ages
Getting excited and hopeful that anyone in “Trump’s” government is wrong in a bad way is not a good way to live. Let’s just try to be safe and hopeful that things go well and we stop the spread.

Even worst case, this is unlikely to crack the top 10 causes of death.  People die and the economics of just remaking money is not that simplistic.
you are way off.  worst case, this kills 11+M Americans (assume population = 330M, 70% infection rate, and 5% fatality rate from those infected).  That would dwarf the #1 cause of death: heart disease, at 647k.

Thanks. I just want us to be helpful to each other and drop the arguing. And most "You said this was a joke here, now why are you contradicting yourself?" usually is read as arguing and not truly trying to understand. Thanks. I'm dropping this now.

My wife keeps us overstocked in paper products even in the best of times, so she's feeling proud.
This is my job in the household, even though my wife hates me stashing TP and paper towels in the dining room :D

But seriously ... buying paper products in bulk, year round all the time, saves a ton of money over buying a 4-pack here and a few rolls there at the local grocery.

Based on the curfew post pages ago and my SIL hearing from a friend that works with FEMA (saying similar), I ran to my grocery store this morning at 7. I did probably get too much as I’ve already prepped as well. I was just girding for the 3 teenage boys at home for weeks. Oldest is coming back from Spring Break in Destin and coming home instead of going back to Clemson. I didn’t want to have to get anything for at least 3-4 weeks. I’m starting to think I didn’t get enough but then I realize my god I don’t want to think about the people who are just starting this weekend. I left with a $400 bill. I bought some NyQuil and Tylenol since I only have Advil, just in case so that ran it up a bit but I still needed a second cart. I got it all in one but the manager split it and brought it out for me. I’m sure I looked like the crazy guy down in NC but if stuff shuts down, I don’t want to not be at least a little bit ready. As a bonus, I found 3 N95 masks I bought years ago for pairing. Still in the plastic bubble, so that made me feel better.

Good luck to all. The shelves were still pretty stocked and workers were bringing out new supplies but even stuff like Soda was gone. Some dude drove by me packing my car and asked if they had toilet paper. Got that at Costco a couple weeks ago. Didn’t even look today.

Things I am thankful for during this crazy time:

Butcher Box

Amazon Prime

Starting my garden indoors this year

Chest Freezer

Always buying paper products in bulk

Streaming Services

So for those of us who are only weekday readers of this site (and who were trying to spend some quality time with family this past weekend and not be overwhelmed by the news) - any decent substance in the last ~50 pages since Friday afternoon?

Looks like more and more things are shutting down (restaurants and other gathering places).  More worksites (possibly including my own) are going work from home.  More cases reported.  Does that about sum it up?

Wow this is the 1st seeing [that COVID patients should avoid ibuprofen] , going to search this out . My wife was told alternating between both
I think that's the norm due to being able to take them every 4 hours and can alternate (so every 2) - don't quote me on that or the other but that's what I'm also hearing - take acetaminophen only I think is the suggestion.  Need one of the medical folks in here to confirm.
Doctor's Note: Does ibuprofen make coronavirus worse? (LINK , AlJazeera.com, 3/16/2020) (Further reading)

Don't take ibuprofen. That was the advice tweeted by France's health minister, Olivier Veran, a couple of days ago. Veran, who also happens to be a qualified doctor, wrote: "Anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, cortisone …) could aggravate the infection. If you have a fever, take paracetamol."

The infection he was speaking about was, of course, COVID-19, the coronavirus that is sparking fear and panic all around the globe. He also added that if you take this type of anti-inflammatory drug regularly, you should seek the advice of a doctor.

Anti-inflammatories are important drugs that are used by millions of people around the world to help treat pain, different types of arthritis, headaches, sore throats and colds.

So why should we suddenly be cautious about using them?

Despite all of their beneficial effects, it has long been known that anti-inflammatories can have a depressive effect on parts of our immune systems.

When it comes to taking them to help ease the symptoms of the common cold, we do not really have to worry about this slight but important reduction in the strength of our immune systems: We are very unlikely to develop complications from the common cold, let alone die from it.

But we need our immune system in top working order in order to battle the coronavirus and win.

I read something a few days ago that discussed the timeline. I'll see if I can find it later when I get back home. But, the gist was that they locked down northern Italy relatively quickly and then the entire country shortly afterward. Now, I also read how not everyone took it seriously at first, but the initial government response was there.

Here's a good article I just found that goes into it a little more.  And one more
Gotcha. I had heard the not taking it seriously as one of the reasons why they weren’t the model to look up to. I wonder if that isn’t based on their age and social media maybe not being as big. I think social media in the US is way more prevalent and people will likely scare easier which isn’t a bad thing to stop the spread.

Hard to keep up with this thread, so apologies if this option for TP and Kleenex has been mentioned.  Our household now has myself and my daughter working from home and my son now doing college online; so the stock of TP and Kleenex we had that seemed adequate, suddenly felt way low.  I tried Amazon first and as can be imagined, most items are out of stock with proposed arrivals between mid April to May.  Grainger had some options, but the delivery timing seemed "iffy".  So, I just ordered on Staples and with free delivery I hope to have "back up" TP and Kleenex by Monday.

Something else that I am wondering about with all the work from homes going on.  Can the Internet and Cell Companies provide the needed bandwidth to accommodate all of this?  We've been asked not to use video (I hate it anyway) to not strain our system, but could there be slowed systems throughout?
Sharing an update if this helps others, the Staples delivery just arrived, less than 48 hours after we ordered and just with the free delivery.

Happy hour duh
We had a call with leadership in our organization this morning - video conference call with 20-25 people.  Someone suggested a virtual happy hour at 5pm each day we are WFH - I laughed at first but then decided it's actually kind of a cool idea.  One unintended side effect from this pandemic is that people are going to be more open to remote work, will find better ways to do remote work and be comfortable with something like an iHappyHour.

Not doing that at all.  I just think we are headed for a national lockdown in the next couple of days and I hope it isn't too late.

It will get worse and more desperate every day IMO.
Giant had been without milk for more than 24 hours last night.

But Whole Foods had been fully stocked each day and was restocking again at 9am.  Have a feeling the big box stores and their robust supply lines may be the way to go.  Whole Foods/Amazon, Walmart, Costco, Target.

SO theyll be sending their kids Daycare has two women over 55 working there. If you were the daycare provider what would you do?
There's no way to be 100% totally safe and make your life riskless. That said, there's a lot that the daycare workers can do to mitigate their risks ... handling children need not be an assured route to infection.

Ok. Just feels like there are some in here that honestly want the worst so they can say I told you so. As Joe mentioned above or a page or two ago, that’s not important. Other than getting out of stocks, I got prepped well based on info in here. I’m more fortunate than most so stocks won’t be an issue in 5 years. Hopefully, my family makes it through OK. That’s all I care about now.

This was my working theory on why my kids had various levels of chicken pox. The earlier ones had it milder than later ones.
