Yeah thanks for jinxing them guy. Well done.Good start today with the rook on the hill.![]()
I agree that is is still Maroths spot when he gets back healthy but until then I don't believe that Leyland will stick with Miner as he has really struggled the last two times out. I also believe that Ledezma has matured into a nice fill in starter and long relief option.Should be Maroths spot
No biggie, Zach has done well and still only has 9 starts to his credit.
Well here he is. I think those two are a coin flip.I agree that is is still Maroths spot when he gets back healthy but until then I don't believe that Leyland will stick with Miner as he has really struggled the last two times out. I think a lefty Bat and a 5th starter at the deadline would be Ideal. But I 'll take just the bat and hope Maroth/Miner/Sanchez can fill the void at 5th starter spot.Ok I said I'd wait until August to say it but the current circumstances seem to warrant it. I think going into August and September and heading into the playoff run there are some things the Tigers will have to address.
But first let me say what a complete surprise they have been even to me and I'm the biggest Tigers fan I know. Every day they just make a play, make a pitch, or hit a pitch that surprises me.
The Good:
Jim Leyland: Thank you. Nuff said.
Lost in the Verlander season (shame he may not be the ROY) and the Zumaya magic is Curtis Granderson. 1.000 fielding percentage, clutch hit in a big game vs the Reds, and a steady presence at the front of the lineup. Granderson has been terrific and will be a solid MLB player for many years to come. Also I want to say I may have been wrong about Brandon Inge. If he was playing SS I would love him more but he now has 18 homers and the guy hits the ball hard and plays hard everyday. I like the way he approaches the game.
With Maroth coming back the rotation seems to be in good shape for a run. They are going to have to let Verlander skip some starts down the stretch and Minor is a nice guy to spot start.
The Bullpen is very good and better than anyone else that will be in the playoffs. People forget about Jamie Walker until Jim Thome needs to be gotten with runners on base in the 7th. Guy is solid. Zumaya is the best arm but he is too young and too raw. Hopefully his competitiveness comes into play in the stretch and the team uses him wisely. Jones although at times shaky still gets the job done and Rodney if he has control is a beast. I like having those four guys starting in the 7th.
Jeremy Bonderman WILL BE the #1 starter if the team makes the playoffs. In a five game series you want Bondeman out there twice and with Rogers age Bonderman is the guy. Remember, he is just six months older than Verlander but is in his 4th full season. He has amazing stuff with one of the best benders in the game to go along with a great slider and a 94 mph fastball. Bonderman, Rogers, and Verlander would be the rotation and add in Maroth if they got to the ALCS.
The not so good: I don't think they have enough hitting. Mags is the only one who really scares people and when he gets hot they will just walk him. Guillen, I-Rod, and Thames are all professional hitters and Polanco and Granderson are good pacesetters. But beyond that it gets sticky. Shelton is not very good and finding a LH hitting 1B in the off-season would be a top priority (Carlos Pena where are you?). Monroe, Thames, and Young are all streaky but I think Young is critical. He is a career .290 hitter and when he is on he is a tough out. He also brings a certain attitude and love for the game.
and in closing....I love the way they are playing but I don't think they are a World Championship team which I can't believe I have to say. However they have very solid pitching and get hits when they need them. But to really be a beast they need a couple of thumpers...well at least one to go with Mags. They also need to address 1B and the DH with LH batters. Should they make a trade? YES! Should they give away Humberto Sanchez? HELL NO. NO WAY! I want a Bonderman, Verlander, Sanchez, Tata, and whoever rotation in two years. DO NOT TRADE SANCHEZ and trade Tata only if what we are getting will help the team take the next step and I don't see any one guy doing that.
But again, just talking about this is quite amazing. It's been a pretty good sports year so far for me but in reality if the Tigers are in the playoffs it is a successful and rewarding year. They aren't there yet but I now can say out-loud that I like their chances and just being able to discuss this is a great feeling. It's been a really long time and the Tigers have always been my #1 team in the city. It sucks not being in Detroit for all of this but I'm listening or watching as much as possible.
GO TIGERS!
That's actually quite strange. Most Tiger fans have been trying to get rid of him for years. I am a Maroth fan because he is consistent and you always know what you are gonna get. If you visitied the big Detoit Tiger boards before the season many (I mean many) thought Zumaya should be the 5th starter and Maroth should be sent to Double A (slight truth variation). He's not a three time all-star but he lost 21 games for the club and has always had a good attitude about pitching and the team. As a #4 starter, he's ok in my book.I think Mike Maroth is a pretty good pitcher, but this injury may be the best thing that's ever happened to him - the way some of you talk about him, you'd think he was a 3 time all-star.
Ok - I'll give you credit, you're being reasonable, and I certainly respect your opinion.I'm just saying that coming back from an injury, is he going to be any better than Zach Minor ? Healthy, I have no doubts, but sometimes these guys rush back, and aren't the same. That's actually quite strange. Most Tiger fans have been trying to get rid of him for years. Spot on, spot on.You know you have a good team when the big question is who to use as your 5th starter. A guy who in many cases gets bumped down to long reliever at playoff time. I think that Maroth might be just good enough to get them into the postseason if he can bounce back from the injury.
Gee, I always thought it was only the Sox fans that cared about what's going on with the other side of town.I'm signing on as a Cubs fan/Sox hater. Go Tigers.

That whoever might be the NCAA College Pitcher of the Year Andrew Miller from UNC. If he pans out Bondy, Verlander, Sanchez, Miller and even Robertson or Maroth could give us some chips to keep this staff going for a while, even when a couple get the big payday and Rogers is looong gone (retired, etc). Detroit will be an attractive free agent spot for the first time in years this off-season. Ilitch is ready to spend, too. Hasta la vista, Red Wings. It's Tiger town again.Should they make a trade? YES! Should they give away Humberto Sanchez? HELL NO. NO WAY! I want a Bonderman, Verlander, Sanchez, Tata, and whoever rotation in two years.
Whatever the case Dombrowski is everything we had hoped he would be. Think about the franchises in Detroit...Holland, Dombrowski, and Dumars are among the best GMs in their sport and all have a proven track record with titles. Oh and then there is Matt Millen. This is why I have never liked the Lions BTW. But back to the subject; the staff is shaping up for now and the future and pitching wins championships. That whoever might be the NCAA College Pitcher of the Year Andrew Miller from UNC. I said all along I had faith in Dombrowski and Illitch has made it clear from the beginning that if they fielded a winner, he would spend. He will. We know as Red Wings fans that he will keep his promise. I can't wait to come home and go to two games in September. Detroit has always been a good baseball town and only the Lions draw more interest/ire. The crowd Friday night standing and cheering for that last out sent chills. This is how it should be.Detroit will be an attractive free agent spot for the first time in years this off-season. Ilitch is ready to spend, too. Hasta la vista, Red Wings. It's Tiger town again.
