I hate to criticize Jim Leyland....but bringing in the infield in the second inning doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense.

Instead of sitting in a luxary box at the All Star game he sat in the upper deck with some old friends. That and the 30 games over .500 thing, he can do nothing wrong in my eyes.

I mean, I certainly understand that. That's why I said I hate to criticize...but, I mean, they are playing the Royals. Pulled in infield in 2nd inning?

If you flip over to ESPN2 right now (4 pm EST) the Futures game is on and Humberto Sanchez gets the start.

Humberto gets the start

In Dombrowski we trust.

The Tigers have a wealth of arms in the system right now. Sanchez is another top of the rotation prospect, not to mention Jordan Tata, Will Ledezma and even Zach Miner.

As much as I want them to add a left handed stick for a potential October run, I hope they don't deal any of these top prospects.
They cannot keep all of these guys, you have to pick one and deal them. I'd trade Ledzema or Tata, easy. Sanchez will be the guy everyone wants though.

If they want Abreu it will cost them Sanchez at least.

Not sure if the Tigers need to make a big move for Bobby. A smaller move for a lefty platoon OF bat would work just fine.

GREAT walkoff by Guillen tonight.

A little worrisome, however, is the pitching the last two days.
give KC a little credit. They have hit very well the last two days.I am concerned about Kenny Rogers, looks like a typical 2nd half swoon.

So far, the Tigers have upped the lead on CWS to 3 1/2 and Boston to 7.

2 good come-from-behind wins the last couple days.

Let's see if they can get UP 4-0 tonight

Agreed on all counts. Sanchez will definitely be the hot commodity that any GM would ask for knowing we won't deal Zumaya, Verlander or Rodney. I'd have no problem dealing Tata or Ledezma for a good, but not great LH bat. We'll see how Dmitri comes along though. Who knows what will happen there.

I was at the game last night and boy does Colon take a long time to pitch. He has no rythym
Why did the game last so long? I got home around 10 and they were only in the 6th inning.

Looking beyond the win/loss record, these Tigers have really been a fantastic team so far. Look at the rotation of Verlander, Robertson, Bonderman, and Rogers. The way those 4 have pitched, they could start a game 1 of a playoff series. Any of them.

What I'm saying is this team actually has a fairly good margin of error. Some of their pitching could cool off a bit and they would still be a dominant staff overall.

If you want to start looking around at the competition:

+ The White Sox are also 4-deep with quality starters. The Tigers 4 have definitely been a notch above.

+ The Red Sox have one stud in Schilling. Wakefield and Josh Beckett have been good, but that's it.

+ The Yankees have 3 good ones in Mussina, Randy Johnson, and Wang. Randy Johnson is having a bizzare year. He isn't giving up very many hits or walks, but its like if he does, they are guaranteed to score, so his ERA is over 5. I have to think he'll have better luck in the second half.

+ The Angels have 4 quality starters, but one is out with an injury right now. They'll win the west.

+ Oakland and Texas - not enough starting pitching.

What you got against Miner (6-1 2.57) or even Maroth (5-2 3.56)?

Heard that when Maroth comes back they may go to a 6 man rotation.

They're going to have to do somethimg about Verlander -- whether that means a 6 man rotation or just resting him or whatever.

Those White Sox starters are starting to leak oil at the wrong time. They better hope the offense holds up.

Well its very hard to keep up a wild winning pace. Even the White Sox of a year ago played something like 500 ball for half the season. That is actually pretty normal. it will probably happen to the Tigers, too, which is why I point out that I like the Tigers' margin for error.

Miner is still too young with such a limited track record that I set him aside for now.Maroth has a WHIP of 1.48 - I use WHIP for the most part because I believe it tells me a lot more about the pitcher. Maroth also has a poor walk/strikeout ratio. Teams are batting 290 against maroth. It goes back to my example of Randy Johnson. His ERA is over 5. But his walk/KO ratio is great and his WHIP is great too. What is happening to Randy is that by some freak thing everyone that does get on scores. Maroth is the anti-Randy Johnson -- Maroth lets everyone on base and none of them seem to score.

Yeah, let's not forget about Miner making 'em five deep (like the Sox), but then Maroth taking them SIX deep. They'll need the depth for these young arms over coming weeks, though.

It wont happen, but I sure wish Leland would allow Verlander to carry the shut out through the 9th for a complete game shut out. This ump and his huge strike zone are perfect for his bender.

The Copa was hopping tonight.

Took my wife and two daughters and we had a great time. About 2 bills lighter but it was worth it!

Minor is going to play as many games as Maroth and Verlander this year (excluding the playoffs) so with those numbers you might as well put him up there with the others even after his off night. He has been exceptional with his 12(ish) starts only losing 2. Maroth will never ever strikout a lot of people. He is a simple 2 and 4 seam pitcher who benifits from having a supurb pitching lineup around him. The Tigers have the luxury of setting up series as slow pitcher, fast pitcher, slow pitcher, fast pitcher (Rogers, Bondo, Maroth, V) and teams cannot adjust. Going through a series against the Tigers is like constantly switching batting cages from 75mph to 90mph. And if you have never done it, stretch out your back before you go from 90 to 75, cause you will throw it out. This is why Maroth is so good.

Noose tightened around the White Sox throat???

Where are those Chisox fans??? They even have athread?
When was the last pennant race for the Tigers again? 1968?This is a little flat spot. The Sox have proven what they are capable of in important games and series.

So this makes the Tigers 3.5 games AHEAD of the WS right? Pretty cool watching the best two teams in baseball go at it! I'll be there thursday.

Should be down to 1.5 after the game on Thursday

I'm not gonna diss the Tigers, as they're playing at a great clip this year and have come out of nowhere in doing so.

They've got to get past the White Sox if they plan on making any playoff noise though. Fortunately for them, if both teams make the playoffs, there's the outside chance that the White Sox get beat by a Western or Eastern team.

Tigers have played great all season and have some very talented players. I want to see how things go in the dog days during a pennant race before I hand them the division crown however.

Let's get 2 teams from the AL Central in the postseason and slug it out from there.

Go White Sox.
