Zumaya gets out of trouble in the 8th. 100 mph fastball even if you are sitting on it, is a bit tough to hit. I wish he would throw that change-up more often. If he develops that pitch he will be the closer we thought Matt Anderson would be. Well me anyway. :bag:

Todd Jones with his normal outing. Gives up three hits and a run but gets the job done. Taking the first two of this series is huge. :thumbup:

Bonderman vs Santana tomorrow. Hope it's on TV here. That should be a great game.

It would be nice if ESPN actually put on Detroit for a Sunday night game...tomorrow night would be great vs. Santana, but the Red Sox/Angels get center stage (can't complain too much about that, I guess, but it's nice to see new blood once in a while)
 
I was at a party in the south suburbs of Chicago tonight ...couple guys blabbering about the Sox' high-scoring win ...I mentioned my loyalty to the Tigers. One of the Sox fans said "actually, I'd like to see you keep beating the Twins. since we know we can't catch Detroit anyway." Man, that sounded sweet!

The kid's major league career is off to a nice start today, with a double and a run scored in his first at bat. Even before he appeared at the plate he made an impact, gunning down a runner at the plate from center field.

They just knocked Santana out of the game.

Tigers really worked Santana today. He may have not had his Superman stuff today but the Tigers also really worked him. Getting him out in the sixth is awesome.

The umpire wasn't giving Santana squat today. No inside strikes and the announcers were actually laughing at a pitch down the middle/upper thigh high that was called a ball.
 
Bonderman has the same stuff as Santana but is a righthander. They are very similar in style, velocity, and pitch variation. I don't think he's getting enough credit outside Detroit but it's also a good thing because he has much less pressure on him than he did the past three years. He's my favorite so I'm biased but I think he has top ten stuff.

McClellan is known as the best balls/strikes umpire in the game. :shrug:

He has stud stuff but at only 23, he has been extremely hit or miss. Much less of that this year. If he stays consistent, the guy has 20 win potential every single year.

3-4 with a 2B and two runs. Plus nailing Castillo at the plate with a laser. Pretty nice debut.

The wheels have definately come off. Leyland can't figure out which ump to argue with...."fair or foul?"....."balk?" 4-3 Minny......ah well,at least the lead is still 8 1/2 over Chicago. The balk was a good call though.

Some strange things happened. They have had good bounces all year. Things like this happen.
 
Twins fans finally happy. Tigers took two of three games. That was the goal.

Four unearned runs, a bases loaded balk, a close call at third, and two errors if you're keeping score at home.

Just so we are keeping in the right frame of mind:

70-34 8 and 1/2 games ahead of Chicago for the division

Have won consecutive series' vs the White Sox, A's, Indians, and Twins.

Twins threw their #1, 2, and three starters at home and win one game. Detroit threw 4,5, and 1b.



Tigers won 71 last year. 72 in 2004.

My goal, and the goal of optimistic fans coming into the season was 82 wins.

I couldn't figure out why they didn't have a very quick hook for Bonderman. He was approaching 100 pitches, and he got them to the 8th inning. Any kind of activity for the Twins would be enough to break his rhythm ...go the the bullpen, like the team has been doing all year. But as noted, no real damage done.

I think Leyland had more confidence in Bonderman than the bullpen at that point. Zumaya and Rodney have been shaky lately. Jones is strictly a 9th inning guy. Bonderman was still throwing mid-90's in the 8th and the only hit he had given up prior to the inning was the Castillo bunt in the first that Inge threw into right field. It's not as if the Twins were doing anything against Bonderman so I think Leyland thought why not keep him out there for the 8th. That inning was just real screwy. Twins were getting all the bounces and hitting the ball in all the right spots. Tigers still won the series and just need to take 3 of 4 from the D-Rays. After that the schedule gets brutal in August with Twins and White Sox at home, and Red Sox and Yanks on the road.

:eek: Wow. Just wow. I guess they heard me complaining. Good pick for the Tigers. Casey is a good fit in that ballpark and he can bat almost anywhere. Shelton will get his shot again.

He has done very little outside that big hit vs the Sox, since he started so hot. I think it's more of a wakeup call for him than anything else. I think he's a solid guy in a rotation and will be jsut that when the postseason approaches. For now they give Casey the reps and see what he can do as we approach moneytime. I really like this move because it costs us very little and it adds a good extra base hitting bat to an order that needs that from the left side.
