My wife has an aunt in Salem, so we’ll be in Portland for a few days (just us) before we drive down to Salem to spend time with her. Also spending a night on the coast, Depoe Bay I think. Champoeg caught my eye on UDisc since it’s in the way down to Salem, might have time to check it out. It also looks like Newport has a pretty decent course, so might check that out when we leave Depoe Bay.

My wife doesn’t play but loves walking around in the forest so PNW disc golf should be perfect for us.

Well if she likes walking around forested areas, Pier Park is really perfect for that. Big old trees surrounding a vibrant park with lots of activities going on. It can get crowded and there's some riff-raff around the perimeter, but ideal for a person that just wants to walk around.

Haven't explored the Coast too much for discs, but my cousin lives in Waldport and says there's some decent courses up and down the Central Coast area, which is where you'll be.

If you’ve been on the fence about buying a premium bag - I recommend you do it. I finally bought a Pound Octothorpe a couple months back (after spending roughly 1000 hours on their website playing with the different options) and it’s been a revelation. It might be the coolest thing I own period. I was starting to get a teeny bit of lower back pain earlier this summer, chalked it up to me getting older - turns out it was my old bag. These things are incredibly light for how much they can carry. They are a little pricey but it’s the last disc golf bag you’ll ever buy. 10/10 would recommend

Nice! I've done some tinkering with a custom design but haven't pulled the trigger just yet. Would love to see a picture of your bag.

I got the Grip EQ AX5 (tan) almost two years ago and that is been great for me.

Huge crowds at Pier are really only on the weekends and weekday afternoons.

I did. I was last place by a lot. I played horrendously. I couldn't hit a putt. And I somehow convinced myself that it was a good idea to try a bunch of forehands after spending precisely one field session practicing them. I put my first forehand upshot right underneath the basket for a drop-in par and spent the rest of the two rounds doing everything but that. But the course layout was pretty. The weather was perfect. There were no bugs. And nobody particularly gave a **** how bad I was.

Talked myself into buying a Heat and a Buzz SS in between the two rounds.

I think I probably would have been better off editing my bag down further. I threw the Saint much better than any over driver. I threw the Mako3 better than my other mids. And I probably should have just putted with a Keystone as I was leaving everything short and could have used a little glide.

My next tournament (which I've already registered for) is just the Trilogy challenge where you use a Saint, a Westside Tursas midrange, and an Agent to putt (you get all three in the player pack, so it's a nice deal). I suspect that might improve things for me. At the very least, I can probably focus my field work on just throwing my Saint and midranges similar to the Tursas. Try to nail down a midrange forehand and get the Saint to 300 feet consistently instead of once in a blue moon.

Have you ever thrown a Vandal? I got one at a tournament back in December and it's firmly in the bag along with another one. I can throw these straight as an arrow and either start straight or on a bit anhyzer...with a slight fade at the end. I can't recommend these enough for the average / casual player.

The other disc I'm super charged about is the Paradox from Axiom. I played with a guy in doubles two weeks in a row who was throwing one of these and I had to go get one. If you saw Chandler Fry's ace last weekend, you can basically re-create that flight. Super understable midrange. I took it out to Milo on Sunday and made some amazing shots with it. Hyzer flip to flat to turn....or big sky anhyzer.

Outside of doing a trilogy, I've been too scared to enter a tournament, so mad props to you for giving it a go. I've been working on my putting a little this summer as I was dealing with a nasty case of the yips. Just trying to throw through the basket and not stress about comebacks. My forehand is garbage. Just can't get a flat release - just a straight up wobble. Which sucks because I'm quite certain I'd win a medal if rock skipping was an Olympic sport.

I just need to play rounds and not try to get by throwing on a baseball field when I get away from my kids for an hour. I wasted a lot of time practicing throwing a flex forehand with a Hades because it was the shot that I throw farthest if I got it right. But there were maybe four occasions over the entire 36 holes where I had the air space to even try that shot And it's a shot that I can't throw if my arm is at all tired (and that hurts like hell to throw even I'm feeling OK) because I just chuck it like a baseball hard across my body and let the stability pull it back. It's a decent shot for my ego, but the course didn't feature a lot of holes with wide open airspace. Consequently, I think I was able to try it maybe four times max, and only really pulled it off once (from the fairway of a par 5).

Even shots that I kind of executed the way I intended had some bad outcomes because I'm not used to having windows, particularly vertically. I threw one drive where I felt I put the exact perfect turnover angle to match the shot (which started OB left and curved right), but I ended up clipping a damn overhanging branch. And instead of just knocking the disc down (which would have been super short but at least in bounds), it just took all the speed from the disc and sent it hyzering OB short and left. I couldn't really be mad. That shot probably felt better out of my hand than any other drive all day. But then I compounded the error by grip locking my second shot OB out on the right side of the fairway when I was just trying to throw something straight with fade at the end. I got beat pretty handily by a guy who's only been playing twelve weeks and who only threw standstill, but he knew his limitations and had been playing a pitch and putt course at least twice a week for that time. So he could consistently get his approaches in Circle 1 for par looks and hit the occasional putt.

That's where the field work really fooled me. I watched YouTube video with Nate Sexton and saw the tip to really cram the disc back into the web between your thumb and forefinger. And I saw another video that showed that Paul McBeth brings his index finger to the ring instead of stacking in on his middle finger. In a field, those two changes were giving me clean releases and eliminating wobble. But I then I wasn't trying to control distance. In the round, I babied a number of forehands and just never gave them a chance to come back left. Or I just turned them over into the ground. I was underdiscing all my approaches, whether forehand or backhand, anyway.

Ideally, I wouldn't try to build my forehand and switch to a spin putt in the week before a tournament, but in truth I really haven't been able to play much so I can't say I changed it up too much. I just need to get out and work from the green out. It's frustrating not being able to throw far,but I could have been putting for par (or at least able to lay up with a jump putt for bogey) on most holes without ever sniffing 300 or even 275. Instead, it felt like I was going to make double bogey whether I made some good thtows or bad ones. I have a good MVP Black Hole basket, so there's no excuse for my putting sucking now.

One last annoying thing about the tournament. The guy who won MA3 (rec), which is supposed to be for players who have never been rated over 800, shot 3 down. Two other guys broke par. I think they were all long-time Ultimate guys. In any case, they didn't throw like rec players. It wasn't a super easy course. 15 down over two rounds won Open and those guys were around 940 rated players. There was some annoying sandbagging in general. We've got maybe 60 players total, there's no reason for a 915-rated player to be playing MA2.

4. Do you have the skill/ability to consistently execute the shot

Especially in tournament play it’s key to play within your abilities and not get influenced by your card mates shot selection.

The best thing you can do before entering a tournament is going to play a doubles league somewhere. You get randomly paired with another player and then it is best shot doubles. You throw a crappy shot and your partner throws a good shot? You then go play from your partners shot. You get a little pressure and experience by playing rules-based golf but in a casual format. Most places cost $5 or $7 to enter. Usually an ace pot and then payout for the 3 to 5 places.

My post was phrased poorly - I ended up going with one of the stock options. Once I made the decision to get one I got impatient. It's navy on the outside with gray accents, I'm pretty much obsessed with it.

I'd be down to meet up and play. It would probably have to be the evening of the 21st or in the morning on the 22nd and 23rd, which are all weekdays. I'll send you and GM a message when it gets a little closer and hopefully we can work something out.

Now I just gotta decide if I want to check my Pound bag and bring all my discs, or just bring ~8 discs and if so which ones. It's a fun exercise - I putt with a Wizard, so that's an automatic. From there I think I'd go with a Berg, Zone, beat Roc3, Eagle, Firebird, Roadrunner, and a Rive. Really tough for me to imagine playing without those 8 at minimum.

Been reading horror stories with respect to the airlines and luggage getting lost/damaged, that's my only real concern. I'll probably end up bringing them all though.

Evening of the 21st or Friday morning the 23rd would probably work best for me.

Been reading horror stories with respect to the airlines and luggage getting lost/damaged, that's my only real concern. I'll probably end up bringing them all though.

I check my other bags and bring my disc golf bags as a carry on.

give me a mid or low speed driver and im happy as a clam, shooting par and beating most people.

My rounds are about a 50/50 split between a full bag and 1 or 2 discs.

I enjoy the shot selection and options of a large bag but I score about the same with a mako or buzz

When traveling I will usually bring 4-5 discs and it works fine but realize there will be times I want a disc that stayed home.

Something like this allows you to keep adding more discs, plus you have a drink holder and some other pockets. It all depends if you want a backpack style of the single strap over your shoulder.
