**Official** Dune movie by Denis Villeneuve thread **UPDATE- Dune 1 back on IMAX! Part 2 release March 1! (1 Viewer)

The first 6 books cover about 5000 years.

I've also read 8 of the books Brian Herbert has put out.
Looks like at least 6 have come out that I haven't read.
The last one I read was Chapterhouse Dune, that was the end of the Dad's series right or no? Been so long I can't remember.

Jesus. So this is basically Wheel of Time level of commitment?
Nah. I just read the first five books (up to Chapterhouse Dune) and that was plenty fine.  I think they were all quick reads but some if memory serves, some things got off the rails starting with God Emperor of Dune.

I'm struggling mightily on Wheel of Time.  I'm on book 8 now and about to tap out.

Yes, Chapterhouse was Frank Herbert's last one in the series.  But, Brian based the rest on notes he supposedly found of his dad's.
The next 6 books, by Brian are prequals that are out there.  He does not have the talent of his father.

Not really.  Wheel was a great series that just go too wordy.  It did not need 14 books, that's for sure.  And those are some big damn books.
For Dune, the movie, you just need the first book.  All of the others are if you want to completely take on that universe.

The first 4 books of Wot were great. There is no shame in tapping out at book 8 my friend. The middle 500 books get so tedious.

Chapterhouse to me was where the original series finally got concise and made sense again.  I remember with Dune some of the middle books just got so strange.  The first couple and the last couple were really the best for me, just more straightforward stories.

Man I hear ya on WOT, I'm right there with you having just finished #7.  I'm still going pretty strong just need a couple other books break in between them before I jump in to the next.  I feel like the good news is (having just looked at Wikipedia) it looks like we've finished the longest of the books in 5,6,7,8.  The next few before Sanderson takes over (and most people say picks things up), are all either decently, or at least somewhat shorter.  So that give me some hope to power through that rough part.

Maybe I'm old. Maybe I'm just tired of all the retreads that Hollywood throws out there.

Love the Lynch version of Dune.

This doesn't look like it has anything to pique my interest at all. And the lead looks even more waifish/unbelievable than Mclachlan did 30+ years ago.

Other than $$$, don't know why this had to be redone. Get off my lawn or something.

Yeah - I bet there's not even a cat milking machine in the new movie

Lol I gave up on Wheel of Time around the 6th book or so. Well written but just too little payoff in each book, I mean those things are tomes and very little actually happens. Dune I only read 3 and enjoyed them but never felt like I was giving up on the series for some reason. The first one is the best by a large margin IMO.

I'm also curious if it gets better for you BB. Please do keep me posted. I love Sci Fi and know nothing about the Dune world, but in laid off due to covid and have nothing to do but read all day.
I realize I never updated this. I think I ended up putting it down at around the 25% mark. I am looking forward to the movie though.

Very happy to read several of you saying to go into this blind. I must have tried to watch Dune (1984) dozens of times and never once am I able to make it more than 20 minutes. Every couple of years I give it another try and I have the same reaction, “Hey, that’s Patrick Stewart!”.

I did try again recently and was impressed with the special effects on the duel with the digital sword and shield, among other things I saw.

In the end the long and seemingly endless names are hard to follow as is the story.

I've read only the first novel. (Someday I'll proceed to the second.) I liked it right from the start, but there isn't much action in the first half of the book. The movie has gotten good reviews so far, which makes me curious about how they could make an exciting movie out of just the first half of the first book. It's all setup. I imagine it ends around the time that Jamis challenges Paul? Whether it ends just before that or just after, it's a weird place for a movie to end. But based on the early reviews, I guess they made it work.

I'll definitely see this in the theater as soon as it's out.

You have to at least read Dune Messiah. I reread it (or listened to it rather) last year and had forgotten what a strong sequel it is

Man, I’m about 15% into the book, and there sure is A LOT OF DIALOGUE ABOUT POLITICAL STUFF.  I mean, I get it, political gamesmanship and palace intrigue are staples of classic sci-fi, but this is admittedly a bit of a slog.
You made it 14% further than I did before I gave up.

I signed up for a free trial at YahooTV and included a free trial with HBO Max. Dune shows up with a search, but it's not available yet to watch. (I'd read that it would be available today at 6 pm.)

Kicks rock.

you rockin' that Illinois weed while watching this one, bromingo?
not my scene and i have to keep stopping with stub titles on to read the crazy words this is way over my head it would only make this harder take that to the bank brochachos

Saw it on the big screen. I think this is one you really should see in the theater. It was an absolutely gorgeous film and the sound was freaking amazing. So glad I saw it that way.

But ultimately I found myself a bit disappointed in the story telling.  I don’t know why, but I just didn’t find the narrative compelling. Nor did I become invested in any of the characters other than Paul.  But damn did the visuals make up for it. So much cool stuff to look at.

I'm debating this...family has no interest, but this is really meant to be seen big. It's playing at a nice new theater 3 blocks from out pad...super easy, reserved reclining seats. I'll pitch it and see if I get any takers.

Started it last night. In similar fashion to watching the first one I fell asleep about 30 minutes in.

Oddly enough I thought the special effects in the original were cooler when it comes to their shields.

I’ll give it another go tonight.

The last movie I really wanted to see in the theater first was Blade Runner 2049, which this feels very similar to in a lot of good ways. I would just rather be at home with the OLED these days. I don't feel like it misses much at all and I don't have to deal with other people/lack of pause.

Villeneuve and Zimmer are welcome to partner on the adaptation for any science fiction book. The attack on Arrakeen was beautiful, but short

Saw it last night, have read the books many times.

I .........liked it? I am not sure what I expected, but it was not what I expected. It was a beautiful movie - scenery, actors, etc. It was long and storytelly. I expected more action. It was slow. They did a great job with Paul and other characters, but I don't remember Jessica being so weepy and disheveled, I always thought she was a strong female character in the book. I left a bit disappointed and I had not been more excited for a movie to come out ever.

I really enjoyed it.  Visually it’s world class and the characters were interesting.  The first half of the movie was better then the second as it seemed to slow down, but they’re clearly setting up #2 with that half so it’s understandable.   Will likely watch it again on HBOMax and may event hit up an imax to see it.

Reactions: SWC
YouTubeTV with the HBO Max add-on didn't work. Good thing it was a free trial or I'd be kind of upset. (Without the free trial, it's $69/mo for YouTubeTV plus $15/mo for the HBO Max add-on.)

I got this to work through the HBO Max app directly, so I'm all set to watch it tonight.
